“I am pleased to announce that O Bee’s fifth branch will be opening this fall in Yelm in the old Blockbuster building next to Safeway. Why Yelm, you may ask? While our new member growth has been fantastic, we also look for reasons why members leave O Bee. In particular, we noticed that our numbers in Yelm had dwindled over the years. All it took was one trip on the Yelm Highway to see why. Yelm is a bustling, vibrant community. It also has traffic issues which have made a “quick trip to Tumwater” an oxymoron. While we are still working through the details, the branch should be open around October. Like all of our branches it will have the warm, friendly O Bee feel – along with the free coin machine many of you love. On another note, if you haven’t signed up for our e-mail newsletter, The Artesian Times, you are missing out. Written completely by staff it goes out approximately twice per month and has information on O Bee events, special offers and helpful articles. Periodically, we also ask for your opinion on important matters concerning the Credit Union (recently it was which debit card images you liked). Should you ever ask for financial advice? I assumed over the years that investors or those who wanted to invest would seek advice as they deemed it necessary. I suppose I assumed this because I tend to ask a LOT OF QUESTIONS. I am known by those around me to ask a lot of questions! I believe it is important in my quest for knowledge, and I never take the position that I know everything. Therefore I, Dave Littleton, ask questions even though I have been an advisor for over 15 years, and have over 1200 clients. I may have a depth of experience, but the world changes all the time and so does the world economy. Thus, financial advice evolves along with the world. Or, at least as far as I am concerned, we advisors need to keep up!

What I used to know and think has changed along with the scars of experience.

What is my point? Recently I met with a person who asked for help with his retirement plan, and at age 58, admitted to me that he should have asked for help a long time ago, but instead he thought he SHOULD know the answers to the questions, therefore he did not meet with a financial advisor until now. He is hoping to retire in four years, and regrets never sitting down with an advisor. This person literally appeared broken and guilt ridden.

He explained that he is a reasonably smart person and usually capable of doing things on his own, or at least able to “figure it out,” to quote him. But finances and investments were not areas he took time to learn. I reassured him that he is not alone. We are surrounded by investment information today via the internet, talk shows, and speakers such as Suzie Orman. But as he pointed out, the “important money” is something he should have discussed with a professional, especially in light of the past decade and all the turmoil and losses of financial wealth. I agreed. Even though we advisors may not agree on everything, we should be able to add insight, and direction. For instance, how much do we need to retire comfortably? This is a frequent question with a moving target. How much is enough? In this case, is the 58 year old on track, or is it too late?

I asked him if I may use his story for the next Beeline article. He nodded in agreement. I thanked him for his candid discussion. I shared with him that I did not fully realize that folks may sometimes choose not to seek advice because they feel it is something they should know.

I will conclude that, as I mentioned above, asking questions and seeking advice does not suggest we need to act upon the answers, but instead, discern if it makes sense for us ... and weigh it. Otherwise, the lack of knowledge could be a permanent mistake.

Over 1000 community members attended this exciting, jam-packed program that offered easy-to-prepare recipes. The Taste of Home Cooking School is America’s leading cooking school program. The School is a 2-hour demonstration of exciting recipes and step-by-step instructions on how to create satisfying and flavorful dishes.

Enjoy the summer recipe below…

Mushroom Bacon Turkey BurgerIngredients

1 ½ cups mushrooms

½ cup diced onions

2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

½ cup panko bread crumbs

1 egg

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 ½ pounds ground turkey

4 bacon strips, cooked and crumbled

4 to 6 hamburger buns

Tomato slices & cheese, optional

Directions

Process the mushrooms & onions mix in a food processor until coarsely chopped.

In a large bowl, combine all ingredients and mix well. Shape into four or six patties.

Using long-handled tongs, moisten a paper towel with cooking oil and lightly coat the grill rack. Serve on buns with tomato & cheese if desired. Yield: 4-6 servings

Helpful Credit & Debit Card Information To Keep Traveling Hassle-Free

If you are planning a vacation or even a weekend getaway to an area where you normally do not use your plastic, contact us at 360.943.0740 or 1.800.642.4014 and let us know. We use a fraud monitoring system that protects us as well as you against card fraud and here is how it works:

When you’re traveling outside your normal area, you may have experienced a debit or credit card denial or your card may have been blocked even though you had money in your account. Why did this happen? It may have been blocked by our fraud monitoring service. This service monitors all cards at O Bee Credit Union. Many members have asked how they decide if they should deny a transaction and/or block a card. There are many criteria that go into the decision process. Every transaction is looked at and scored based on the individual member’s transaction history, location of the purchase, and any previous fraud with similar transactions, to name a few. Based on the scoring and dollar amount, your transaction could be blocked and the card could also be blocked.

What can you do to prevent this inconvenience?

If you are traveling outside your normal area, let us know, we will place a note in our system that says you are traveling which will assist in keeping your cards open. Also, updating your contact information such as your cell phone number is very helpful in case the fraud monitoring center needs to reach you to check if a charge is valid or not.

In addition, if you are traveling internationally be sure to let us know which countries you are traveling to so we can ensure you have the least disruptions possible. This also gives us the chance to give you the international number for the fraud monitoring service and the international number for lost and stolen cards.

While these steps can help to prevent an inconvenience, cards can still be blocked if the fraud service center feels your card has been compromised by fraud. It is always a good idea to have a backup card or form of payment in the event your card is blocked or compromised while traveling.

What is Going on with Rates?Over the past few weeks, we have seen rates on the 30-year fixed jump from around 3.375% to 3.875–4.125% depending on the loan chosen.

The jump in the rate was caused primarily by two factors: Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke hinted last week that the Fed may begin tapering its “quantitative easing” policies sooner than many

imagined. This means they may not be buying as much of the Mortgage Backed Securities as they have been which is generally

bad for rates. There also seems to be a general sense that the economy is getting better, also generally bad for rates.

The common reaction to rising mortgage rates is worry and concern, But it is important to keep perspective. Mortgage rates are rising from historically low levels. The recent jump in rates simply brings them back to where they were less than a year ago. In context of the last

30 years, this rise is barely noticeable, take a look at this chart below that starts in 1976 and ends now.

Purchase deals make great sense at these low rates especially when combined with the low prices that still exist. A refi can also still make sense and we are happy to run the numbers for you to be sure

so give us a call today, we can help!

Social Security: Seven Keys to Optimizing Your Benefits

Mushroom Bacon Turkey BurgerIngredients

1 egg

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 ½ pounds ground turkey

4 bacon strips, cooked and crumbled

About us: Washington Cellular was started in 1988 (when cell phones first appeared) with the belief that cell phone users deserved a friendlier, higher level of customer service than the carriers were providing.

It also has traffic issues which

have made a “quick trip to Tumwater” an oxymoron.

If you are interested, just go to www.obee.com and click on the Join Our Email List image at the bottom.

Over the first five months of 2013, the Credit Union has set new high marks for membership and loan growth while keeping our membership satisfaction goals at new highs as well. This is due to a staff that truly cares about those we serve.
