Principal’s Report Recognising Our Wonderful Volunteers Children watch everything we do. By giving back to the community the volunteers at Beecroft Public School are showing our children firsthand how volunteering makes a difference and how good it feels to help others and to contribute positively to the lives of others. Recognising Excellence - Presentation Day 2018 This Friday Beecroft Public School will be holding our annual Presentation Day again at Cherrybrook Technology High School at 10.45am. On Friday we will recognise individuals who have excelled in academics, citizenship and a range of extra-curricula activities. Every year, it is not possible to recognise every student and for this reason teachers always find the task of allocating awards challenging. Please reinforce the importance of striving for personal bests and individual growth while also celebrating those students who have excelled and will receive awards on Friday. Every student has something to be proud of this year. Teachers have been discussing with their students their proudest 2018 achievements. For some it is the way they have supported their friends, for others it is making the PSSA team or for becoming a better scientist, mathematician or creative writer. At Presentation Day, I will be asking every student to reflect on their achievements for 2018 and to celebrate this throughout the ceremony. Please be aware that there is no onsite parking available at Cherrybrook Technology High School, so leave plenty of time, as you may need to park and walk a reasonable distance. As it is a regular school day, we would encourage parents to ensure students return to school on the bus with their peers. Students will only be allowed to leave, under arrangements made in writing, at least 24 hours before the event and in an emergency. We are looking forward to seeing many of you, as we celebrate a great year of learning. Recognising Outstanding Achievement in Sport, Mathematics and the Arts Students at Beecroft Public School excel in many academic and extra-curricula domains. This week I am thrilled to inform you of 6 students’ outstanding achievements. Leah D (6N) has received the highest honour, within the Beecroft Zone PSSA, be being awarded a BAZA for achieving the highest possible level for her soccer. Olivia W (6R) has auditioned and been chosen to perform in the Shakespeare Summer Season to be held at Bella Vista Farm in December.

Two of our students, Benjamin S (5J) and Bill Y (6L), were presented with the highest honours for the ICAS competition at the University of New South Wales. Congratulations for being awarded the ICAS medal for achieving the highest score in English in Years 5 and 6 respectively. Congratulations also to Eric L (2W) and Yuxi Wang (1P) for their success in Operation Art. Both artworks have been chosen for the Operation Art’s Touring 50 in 2019. The tour will begin at The Art Gallery of NSW, followed by a tour of regional galleries before being donated to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. Yuxi’s artwork has been chosen for a special honour of being the featured artwork on the Secretary, Mark Scott’s, Christmas Card. Congratulation Leah, Olivia, Benjamin, Bill, Eric and Yuxi on these incredible achievements.

Principal for a Day- Thursday 6 December 2018 By now many of you would have heard the news, that I will be enjoying a day of rest and relaxation as the joint winners of the Multicultural Fair prize ‘Principal for a Day’ assume the important responsibilities of running Beecroft Public School. Young Principals, Maadhav and Rudra, were surprised to learn that one of their very important jobs on the day will include the construction of toys donated by Woolworths and the launching of our latest play space on the Mary St Playground. I look forward to reporting to our community the great work of the Principal Maadhav and Principal Rudra in the newsletter next week. Tanya Rose Principal

The Importance of Sleep for Children Sleep is a vital part of everyone’s routine and an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. Studies show that children who regularly get adequate sleep have improved concentration, motivation, memory, behaviour and overall emotional, mental and physical health. Dependent upon age, school-age children need approximately 9 to 12 hours of sleep a night. There are a variety of reasons bedtime difficulties can start at this age too. Homework, sports and after-school activities, computers, mobile devices, TVs and busy family schedules all can contribute to children not getting the sleep they need. Sleep-deprived children can become over-excited or short-tempered and may have difficulties focusing in school. Sleep and a child’s mental health and wellbeing go hand-in-hand. To encourage healthy sleep habits, here are some ways to encourage your child to fall asleep faster and sleep well:

• Only use the bed for sleeping in. • Go to bed at or near the same time every night. • Avoid big meals right before bedtime. • Keep technology and electronics (computers, mobile devices, TVs) out of the bedroom. • To allow your child to unwind, turn technology and electronics off at least 30 minutes before bedtime. • Create a healthy sleep environment such as soft lighting, a comfortable temperature, calming music.

For more information on the importance of sleep for children, visit:

Eco Corner Report Yum yum! Well, the garden will need a bit of work at the next working bee. With the heavy rain last Wednesday the lower garden path is all but

washed away, with only the well laid stepping stones remaining. Always nice to have projects to work on. The knights harvested two more cauliflowers, one of which went to a phone order. Got to be quick these days.

Cauliflower Hazelnut Salad The other produce sold was spinach and silver beet, tomatoes and kale. Lots more tomatoes on sale this week due to the sunshine,

and also some sweet capsicums. Our first corncobs will also be sold the week after next. A reminder that greening group is on this Thursday as Presentation Day is Friday. So parents bring your $2 on Thursday afternoon

pick up.

Message from the President

A very big thank you to the teachers who went to a great deal of trouble to put on the wonderful thank you morning tea for the school volunteers, last Wednesday. It was not only a wonderful time to see all those who help out through the school, being acknowledged by the teachers, but also a great encouragement for all, that the school community is alive and thriving, through and because of the many different and varied parents and othershelping out our school. Finally, this week the new play area between the infants and primary school buildings starts to take shape. This playground was discussed and set aside nearly 5 years ago. We are all excited to see this coming to fruition and be ready for 2019. A big thank you to Jonathon Barraket for his vision and getting this up and running, and also for the teachers’ playground committee, particularly Mrs Robbins who have followed this through. First P&C General Meeting is on Wednesday 20 February 2019.

BOOSH

Hello Booshies!!! This week is Art Week. Did you know we have an Art Club at Boosh? Staff Sophie has been helping the students paint in the style of famous painters and they have been working hard over the term to create works. Tuesday afternoon this week there will be an Art Gallery installed in the cottage. Children and parents alike will be able to wander through and see the techniques the children have learnt and the wonderful art works they have created. VACATION CARE We have begun contacting non-Boosh BPS families this morning with offers of enrolment for available positions. Current Boosh families are still able to book days while they are still available. If you have not submitted your permission slip please do so immediately so that you can have access to book Vacation Care days. 2019 PERMANENT AND TEMPORARY OFFERS I will begin contacting families later this week with Permanent and Temporary offers for 2019. Please note, for Temporary positions there are often several rounds of offers, as families higher on the waitlist may decline positions. It can take several weeks to finalise temporary offers. If you are interested in your child’s position on the waitlist in comparison to positions being offered please contact Boosh from week 9 onwards. CHANGES TO SIGN IN/SIGN OUT AT BOOSH Regulation changes that come into effect in January 2019 have meant a change to the way families sign their children in and out of Boosh. In the coming weeks information will be provided to families on the new electronic system that will be in place by the end of term. We ask for patience and understanding as all staff and families adjust to this new system. YEAR 6 BOOSH FAREWELL This Thursday night is the Year 6 Boosh Farewell.
