News From Kidsout

On the 23rd of April, KidsOut organised for 27 children from refuge and their mums to attend an Eastleigh football match versus the Tranmere Rovers as VIP guests. Treated to lunch at the club house, face painting, their own football kit and special meet sessions with the Eastleigh players, the children came primarily from refuges in the Southampton and Hampshire area. Each

was tasked with escorting a player onto the pitch, and then returned to special seats to watch the game. “The children have all stated that they really enjoyed meeting the players and being able to walk out with them wearing their very own kit,” said Jane, a local refuge worker. “They loved the stadium and food, and described the day in one word: AMAZING!!!!!” The day was part of KidsOut’s Fun Days service, which works to give children living in refuge, who have escaped domestic violence, or those with other disadvantages the opportunity to have fun and remember what it’s like to be children.

“My experience with KidsOut is one of great gratitude and positivity,” said Patricia, a refuge worker. “It has been lovely to watch so many of

the families having fun family time together as l know for many that has been their first time and this was only made possible by Fun Days. The mothers told me they could not believe how fantastic the day was and it was amazing to see their children look so happy; they would never have been able to afford a day like this for their children and are so appreciative.” Based in Leighton Buzzard, KidsOut charity brings fun and happiness to over 50,000 disadvantaged and vulnerable children across the UK each year, and this is largely due to the fantastic support received in the local area. If you are interested in joining the KidsOut Leighton Buzzard Community Committee to help plan events and raise the charity’s profile locally, please contact the Fundraising Team on 01525 243215.

Bee Local popped into Local family firm Stewkley Stone to deliver a box of delicious cup cakes to the boss and Director Steven Reeves.

Steven was the winner of our

“Nominate Someone at Work” competition. It was actually Steven’s wife who nominated him, she told us

“I would just love him to know that not only me but all his staff think very highly of him, he is a

great boss”

Lisa told Bee Local she was so surprised to hear that they had won but delighted for Steven and of course she and the team shared the prize at their tea break!

Have a look at Stewkley Stone if you get a chance, they have some beautiful fireplace surrounds in their Stewkley showroom and specialise in granite and marble. Tel 01525 240711 www.stewkleystone.com

CAKE BOSS

*** Michelin Starred ***Bowlers certainly enjoy their bowling, but as much talk can be about t

he quality of the meal provided by a Club after a match. We could name a few Clubs who are miserly and who leave all the catering

to a few ladies. This is not the case at Cheddington Bowls Club, where the men muck in. Rodney’s roast pork and Richard’s herbed chicken set a standard other Club’s cannot match. Fantastic food at £2 a head and that invariably

includes a tasty pud!

Bowls is a great value sport: a new bowler can join Cheddington Bowls Club for less than the equivalent of a £1 a week. Why not:

On one amazing day this July, Milton Keynes will be the set-ting for a very unique event.

In a celebration of Milton Keynes’ people and places, what could be the longest line of super-sized dominoes ever seen will weave across the city taking in in shopping areas, leisure facilities, residential areas, restaurants, bars and boulevards.

Dominoes is a one-off event for Milton Keynes, bought to the city by IF: Milton Keynes Inter-national Festival (15 - 24 July) and created by international company, Station House Opera. It will take place on Saturday 16 July.

Thousands of special blocks will be used to create a moving domino line that runs across 2 kilometres of the city, unfolding over the course of the day.Along the route there will be sculptural features, highlight ‘performances’ or gravity-defy-ing ‘tricks’. This extraordinary event definitely has a unique wow-factor!

An international phenomenon, Dominoes has featured in cities across the world including Hel-

sinki, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Rotterdam and Melbourne.

How to be part of Dominoes…The Festival is inviting groups, companies and individuals to take part in this unique event and help build the domino line. Participants receive a Domi-noes T-shirt and backpack, a packed

lunch, drinks and other useful items for the day. There will also be a party at the end of the event day to say thank you and celebrate what has been achieved.www.ifmiltonkeynes.org

A landmark pub in the centre of Heath and Reach has been restored to its former glory, thanks to the vision of a local resident and hospitality entre-preneur. The former Dukes Head, an 18th century, Grade II listed pub opposite The Green, has gone through extensive refurbish-ment and opened a few weeks ago as The Dukes gastro pub offering freshly-cooked food, real ale and bed and breakfast accommodation. The move is the brainchild of Sarah Smith, who has a 14-year background in hospitality, including a spell as restaurant manager at the Michelin-starred Stonor Arms Hotel near Henley on Thames. The new venture has seen Sarah go into

partnership with her sister Jo Carter, who owns a successful recruitment company specialis-ing in staff for the advertising, marketing and digital industry. Sarah, a mum of two who lives in Leighton Buzzard, said: “I’ve known the pub for many years, and had both my daughters’ christening parties there, so it was sad to see it fall on hard times.“I drive past it every day and it has always been my dream to bring the place back to life so

when the opportunity presented itself I leapt at it, although

there was a great deal of work to do to retain its original

features as well as bring the facilities up to date.”

Several thousand pounds have been spent on the pub’s facelift, which includes restoring the open fire, re-equipping the bar and restaurant areas, and refurbishing the six bed and breakfast rooms.

“We set up a Facebook page to ask people what they wanted

to see at The Dukes, and as well as some great ideas such

as making the pub dog-friendly to accommodate local walkers, people came forward with their

photos and memories of the place in its heyday.”

SHY BLADDERSHY BLADDER

Is a fear of using public toilets holding you back?

What is Shy Bladder Syndrome?Shy bladder syndrome can affect anyone men or women, but is a huge secret phobia for many men. Some studies suggest that as many as 220 million people worldwide suffer from shy bladder syndrome, or avoidant paruresis to use its medical name. This is a particularly difficult condition for many men, because they often have to use a urinal in very close proximity to other men with their privates are on parade so to speak! The feelings or discomfort associated with using public toilets can range from mild discomfort to crippling anxiety resulting in the sufferer being unable to use a public toilet at all.

Side AffectsThis condition is often kept secret by men, so they will be

constantly thinking about how to avoid going to the toilet in public and will come up with strategies to make sure that they don’t get found out or run the risk of exposing themselves to ridicule and humiliation. Maybe they will refuse social invitations because they are worried about what the toilets will be like, or possibly be in agony on a long car journey because they think they won’t be able to go in the urinals at a public toilet. The sufferer often feels, ashamed, guilty, embarrassed, not as good as everyone else and less of a man which then affects other areas of their life because their self esteem is affected.

What causes this problem? This is a question that many sufferers ask themselves; How is this happening? Why can’t I go? What happened to cause this? If only I could remember when it started or why it started, maybe then I could solve the problem.

Many men think that they can’t control the problem and it just happens to them. In reality “it” doesn’t just happen. The cause of the problem is a combination of your thinking style, self esteem and social anxiety. The fear of being judged is a huge factor in maintaining this phobia and is crucial to address in order to resolve it.

How Can Thrive help? The Thrive Programme helps you understand how your mind operates. You will learn how you can control your feelings of anxiety, how to improve your self esteem, how to manage your thinking style and imagination. When you understand what makes you tick you will feel incredibly empowered and you can leave behind this debilitating condition much easier and faster than you ever believed, to regain control and live the life you deserve!

Health & Fitness

sponsered byAll About Me

Fitness

by Andy Plant

Get fit with your partner.

Starting out on a new fitness regime can often be a

daunting task, when something becomes challenging it doesn’t take much for motivation to start dropping and eventually you can give it up all together. It’s not just ladies that struggle with the motivation, but men too. What is a better way to keep both of you on track than training together?

In fact couples partnering up to workout has become

quite popular in recent times, So much so that the phrase ‘couples that sweat together, stay together’ has been splattered all across social media sites recently. Long gone are the days of separating once you walk through the gym doors, more and more couples are hitting the weights room, jumping on treadmills or even attending classes together.

The top 5 benefits of working out with your partner.

1Motivation… Let’s be fair sometimes you really cannot

be bothered to work out. Training with your partner can give you that extra boost when your flagging.

2Spend more time together… In todays world there is

always work or something in the way of spending quality time with each other. Training together gives you the opportunity for some one 2 one time doing something that not only will you enjoy but benefits your health and wellbeing.

3Improve your workout efficiency… It’s been shown

in social psychology that the mere presence of someone observing you increases your effort levels. Your partner being present at workouts will give you that extra boost you need to really get great results. Just on a side note make sure you master your gym routine before inviting your partner along, save embarrassment if you slip up

4You’re on the same diet… Cooking and eating out just

got a whole lot easier as you’re both on a health kick. No more sitting there watching your partner munching on chocolate you wished you were eating.

5Both more energetic… Working out has been

proven to boost energy levels. As you’re both training together, both your energy levels will be higher. This means less lounging on the sofa and taking naps freeing up more time to spend enjoying activities in each other’s company.

To sum it up working out with your partner can

be a great boost not only to your gym workouts, but your relationship as a whole.

It’s the Law

With Father’s Day just round the corner, we have put together some ideas for families who are separated or divorced, which we hope will help to make it a positive experience.

Talk to the other parentIf Father’s Day does not fall on your scheduled weekend, see if it is possible to change weekends or swap part or all of Sunday. Try to give plenty of notice so other plans are not made.

Plan aheadDo not leave it until the last minute to decide what you are going to do. Having a plan will help to reduce uncertainty and stress.

If you cannot see your children on Father’s Day then try to arrange to phone or Skype them on the day. Then celebrate it when you next see them, perhaps having a special meal.

Talk to the childrenOnce you have agreed on the arrangements for the day, talk to the children about what the plans are. Maybe there

are traditions you would like to uphold, such as breakfast pancakes or a game of football at the park and perhaps introduce some new traditions too. Think about what you really enjoy doing with the kids and plan something around that.

Plan something for yourself If you are not able to see your children on the day it is possible that your mind will start thinking about Father’s Days in previous years or imagining what they are up to now. Try to have plans for the day to stop you from dwelling on that. Even just meeting up with a friend for a drink or going to watch a film can give you a lift.

Support for fathersRelate is one of the UK’s largest providers of relationship support. It has a campaign called Being Parents Apart which offers a variety of support for parents

and families at all stages of separation

Gingerbread is a long-established organisation that provides advice and practical help for single parents, with a dedicated dads section on its website.

Only Dads is specifically for divorcing or separating fathers.

Separateddads has a blog with an ‘Ask the expert’ section and an online directory to help fathers to find further advice and support.

Whatever your current circumstances, we hope that you have a Happy Father’s Day.

From coff ee to collectables, clothing to chiropractors there is much to discover.

It’s so easy to overlook places like this. When you live somewhere long enough, you forget about the parts of the town that brought you pleasure when you fi rst moved here. The weather is improving so make this summer your ti me to (re)discover the joys of your town and try these specialist shops run by local people with a passion for their product.

Peacock Mews’ shops are nestled around a lovely cafe called Latt e Dah. It has been recently refurbished by its new owners and is now a light and airy coff ee shop with an outside pati o area. Perfect for sharing tea and cake with friends on sunny aft ernoons.

If you like clothes which are stylish and a litt le bit diff erent then try KINGS ROAD, a fantasti c independent womenswear shop established in the town for nearly 35 years. Huge choice and a welcoming atmosphere, makes this a desti nati on shop for ladies fashion, shoes and accessories.

For the creati ve types, The Spott ed Sheep is a fun,

Peacock Mews Collectables reside in a number of units and sell everything from vintage clothing, retro and anti que furniture, ceramics, collectables and vintage jewellery. They truly are treasure troves to explore. The owners are now hosti ng table top sales in the mews every Sunday (where the Great Briti sh weather allows!)

When it comes to health and wellbeing, choose from a wide range of beauty treatments including a relaxing massage, facial or a summer pedicure with the team at Bare Essenti als. Or for help with any aches and pains look no further than Morag Pine for skilled Chiropracti c care.

For hairdressing, try Twinstyle, where owners and twin sisters, Mandy and Julie have established a fantasti c reputati on since starti ng the business in 1988. They are one of the mews’ longest standing residents and are welcoming and friendly to all.

As you can see, there is so much on off er within the Mews but it doesn’t stop there. Some more of the best independent businesses occupy this part of town. On the Hockliff e Street approach you have The Bald Buzzard, Leighton’s fi rst micro pub, a small independent ale house serving

Don’t forget, Peacock Mews is also a key part of the Leighton Buzzard children’s trail with two artworks hidden inside.

It is easy to sti ck to your usual routi ne but don’t forget to break out from ti me to ti me. Treat your town like you would whilst on holiday somewhere new. Meander, explore and browse. It’s lots of fun, and who knows, you might discover your new favourite shop...

SUICIDESuicide is the single biggest killer of men aged under 45 in the UK, with 76% of all suicides in 2014 being men (ONS, NISRA, GRO 2014). It’s a shocking statistic, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Few people go through life without, at some point, having a suicidal thought or feeling. Whilst suicidal feelings are more common than we like to admit, it doesn’t mean that it’s the answer for you. There are always other options. What makes people suicidal? There’s never one reason, but usually a combination of things:

A major loss, trauma or setback in your life can make you feel life isn’t worth living, for example:• If you’ve lost a person or

a relationship that meant everything to you, or you lose your job or encounter financial difficulties, all of which are problems that can be tackled and resolved.

• When someone close to you has attempted or died by

suicide.• You have been using drugs or

drinking heavily.• You have experienced bullying

or rejection, especially if it goes on for a long time, which can leave you feeling low and worthless.

• You may be upset and angry for no reason at all, which can be very frightening.

• People become depressed not just because sad, traumatic or stressful things happen to them. The chemicals in the brain which control our mood can get messed up, become unbalanced and we can feel depressed.

• A combination of any of these things.

Feeling suicidal is actually fairly common. It’s normal for people to get into situations that make them panic, and they briefly think about wanting to take their own life. It’s a passing feeling and normal, so long as those feelings don’t last for extensive lengths of time or become too intrusive or over whelming. When they start taking control of what you’re thinking, then it can be dangerous and you should talk to someone about how you’re feeling.

Health & Fitness

Sshhh - Bowel CancerHave a read to get to the bottom of things

Us British are famous for our toilet humour. However, what I am talking about here is certainly a subject for the inner walls of the toilet but not a laughing mat-ter at all.

In the UK over 40,000 cases of Bowel Cancer are diagnosed every year and about 1 in 20 people will develop Bowel Cancer sometime in their lifetime. How many people are there in your community group, church, work, street, family, etc? Do the maths. If you’re not directly affected chances are you will know at least a dozen or so people who will be, sometime.

Each year in the UK around 16,000 people die of the disease, that’s one person every half an hour. But despite such alarming statistics, the good news is that bowel cancer can be success-fully treated in over 90 per cent of cases if caught early. Early diagnosis means that survival from Bowel Cancer is growing.

This is because of early diagnosis and mainly from knowledge of the disease.

What do I need to know? 1. Those most likely to be affected:• Age - almost 9 in 10 cases of

bowel cancer occur in people aged 60 or over

• Diet - a diet high in red or pro-cessed meats and low in fibre can increase your risk

• Weight - bowel cancer is more common in people who are overweight or obese

• Exercise - being inactive increases the risk of getting bowel cancer

• Alcohol and Smoking - a high alcohol intake and smoking may increase your chances of getting bowel cancer

• Family History - having a close relative (mother or father, brother or sister) who devel-oped bowel cancer under the age of 50 puts you at a greater lifetime risk of developing the condition

2. What to look for:• a persistent change in bowel

habit that causes them to go to

the toilet more often and pass looser stools, usually together with blood on or in their stools

• a persistent change in bowel habit without blood in their stools, but with abdominal pain

• blood in the stools without other haemorrhoid symptoms, such as soreness, discomfort, pain, itching or a lump hanging down outside the back passage

• abdominal pain, discomfort or bloating always provoked by eating, sometimes resulting in a reduction in the amount of food eaten and weight loss

So, now you know. If you do suf-fer from any of these symptoms ,and especially if you are in one of those high risk groups of people, get straight down to see your GP and get an early appoint-ment so they can get some tests underway and catch this horrid disease early.

If you want some further infor-mation I would suggest you look at the Beating Bowel Cancer web site: www.beatingbowelcancer.org

In theGarden

June 21 is the longest day of the year, and the extra light and warmth encourages the garden to put on an extra burst of growth. It can be a variable month, with chill nights and rain, but the chances of frost are slim and the garden may never look better; regular upkeep will ensure a long summer of interest.

Jobs for the garden• Hoebordersregularlytokeepdowntheweeds• Position summer hanging baskets and contain-

ers outside. Make sure they are well watered preferably using collected rainwater, or recycled grey water whenever possible.

• Mow the lawn weekly and apply a selective weed-killer which kill weeds but not the lawn. Be careful if you have wild flowers growing in it as it may mistake them for weeds.

• Plant out summer bedding and fill gaps in borders with annuals

• Stake tall or floppy plants. Sweet peas can be trained onto their support to create a good display

• Prune spring-flowering shrubs and cut back/clean and divide spring flowering perennials

• Check roses for mildew, aphid, black-spot or other insect or disease problems and if they ap-pear, take steps to control them straight away

• Harvest lettuce, radish, other salads and early

potatoes. Earth up the rest and promptly plant any potatoes still remaining.

• Pinch out side shoots on tomatoes and tie in as required

• Shade greenhouses to keep them cool and prevent scorch

Plant of the Month – Lavender An easy to grow, evergreen shrub that produces masses of beautifully scented flowers above green or silvery-grey foliage. This drought-tolerant plant thrives in a sunny border, container, herb or gravel gardens. On heavier soils, like clay, lav-ender can be fairly short-lived, becoming woody at the base. To prolong its life, add organic matter and gravel to improve the drainage and plant on a mound. If growing as a hedge, plant on a ridge to keep the base of the plants out of wet soil. There are a number of different types of lavender with English lavender, Lavandula angustifolia the hardiest. Its flowers range from white to deep vio-let. L. Hidcote has a beautiful deep violet-purple flowers growing to about 60cm high, L Munstead, another favourite has highly-fragrant, blue-purple flowers and is only 45cm high. French lavender, Lavandula stoechas and hybrid lavenders are not as hardy and may suffer in severe winters. They are easily recognised by the colourful ear-like tufts topping the flowerheads. They have a long summer flowering period are ideal for containers. All lavenders benefit from annual pruning and you can, of course dry the flower heads and use as a pot pourii.

Midsummer's DayThe longest day of the year comes all too soon in my opinion. Just three weeks after the arrival of summer on 1st June, the summer solstice (21st June) has passed and we have winter to look forward to again.

It's all to do with which calendar we follow. The astronomical calendar has summer starting in March when we put our clocks forward an hour, whereas the meteorological summer runs from June to August.

This mixture of calendars is indicative of the mixed-up celebration Midsummer's Day has be-come. Like many other ancient traditions, it has its roots in pagan Britain but has been adopted and adapted to fit in with Christian beliefs.

Our ancestors - in awe of the power of the sun - celebrated the summer solstice by lighting bonfires to protect against evil spirits. They also built stone circles, set in alignment with the ris-ing of the sun, such as those at Stonehenge.

Midsummer's Eve was a time for fairies (hence Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream) and flowers, which were placed under the pillow to induce important dreams about future loves.

Christians celebrate the birth of St. John the Baptist on Midsummer's Day (24th June). Mystery plays, based on biblical events, are performed at this time of year, particularly in cathedral cities such as Chester, Lincoln and York. By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

WHAT IS 3D PRINTING3D printers are a new generation of machines that can turn a computer design into a real object on your desk. They can make almost everything from plastic toys to metal components , they can also produce clothing, shoes, dental implants and one day soon, body parts.

3D printers are remarkable because they can produce a myriad of things from different materials, all from the same machine. They work by taking a 3D computer image and slicing it into thousands of tiny slices thinner than a human hair. It then extrudes (melts) the raw material and lays these slices down from the bottom up and as the slices stick together they form a 3D object. Why is it important? It quite simply is changing almost every aspect of design prototyping and manufacturing. It is no exaggeration to call it the New Industrial RevolutionThis all means that probably the most important place for 3D printers is in our schools.Tomorrows employers in any industry to do with design and/or manufacturing inc aerospace, automotive,

architects, medicine and even fashion will need students with this experience .

3D PRINT WORLD AYLESBURY run a schools challenge called FORMULA 3D where 12 schools design and 3D print a slot car (think Scalextric)They then race these against 12 schools on a huge 18m digital track. 4 lanes wide with 12 cars, (yes you can now overtake), the prizes include 3D printers. We then encourage local businesses to sponsor their local school and have their logos on the car, track side and on YouTube and all sponsorship goes towards printers for that school.

These events can also be put on for PTA groups with money raised supplying Printers for the school. It’s great fun (better than a quiz night). We also, through the charity E-nable, are printing prosthetic limbs for children and helping schools get involved with this. A prosthetic hand for a child can be printed for around £10, that’s life changing.

So is it the next big thing? If you are a designer, engineer or student then yes butfor most people maybe not yet. It’s an emerging technology which means, like home computers and mobile phones most people will remain sceptical about needing one until everyone has one and then we’ll all wonder how we ever managed without one. He enjoys the company of adults and teenagers and is good with other dogs. He needs to learn his basic training and to get out and meet new things. The rewards will be there for an owner willing to put in the time.

If you could offer Tig or any of our other dogs a loving and secure home, please call in at the kennels any day between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. or give us a call for more details. BEER AND A BBQ FOR FATHER’S DAYSunday 19th June

Spend time with your dad in a historic war-time setting

This year there will be a special Fathers’ Day barbecue at Bletchley Park, complete with the visitor attraction’s very own beer. Created by The Concrete Cow Brewery in Milton Keynes, the beer has been named Station X; one of the terms used to describe Bletchley Park during World War Two.

Dads and their families can enjoy the traditional barbecue with burgers and hot dogs plus a veg-etarian option whilst listen to the vintage sound of The Bevin Boys. The swing band plays vocal led jazz standards and other hits from the 1940s.

Anyone wishing to enjoy the Father’s Day bar-becue should enter through admissions as usual then head to one of the food outlets on site to buy a barbecue voucher.

The barbecue will be on the main lawn where the Codebreakers spent their free moments dur-ing the war so families can relax in these historic and picturesque surroundings. Food will be served between midday and 2pm.

Station X beer will also be sold in the Hut 4 Res-taurant and the shop. For visitor information, contact 01908 640404, [email protected], or go to www.bletchleypark.org.uk

To enter, send us an email with subject ‘Superdad to [email protected]’ or send to Superdad, Bee Local Maga-zine, 16 Slicketts Lane, Edlesborough, Beds LU6 2JD. Competition closes Wednesday 15th and winners will be notified by 17th June so that collection / delivery can be arranged. All decisions are final and no cash alternative will be offered. Bee Local reserve the right to substitute the prize for a similar item if it becomes no longer available.

IS YOUR DAD A SUPERHERO?

AN EPIC READ

A Bee Local indulgence here as I loved this epic true life novel and so did the poor man I “had” to talk to when I saw he was reading it! Others I have shared it with also end up raving about it. This review is from www.goodreads.com

“It took me a long time and most of the world to learn what I know about love and fate and the choices we make, but the heart of it came to me in an instant, while I was chained to a wall and being tortured.”

So begins this epic, mesmerizing first novel set in the underworld of contemporary Bombay. Shantaram is narrated by Lin, an escaped convict with a false passport who flees maximum security prison in Australia for the teeming streets of a city where he can disappear.

Accompanied by his guide and faithful friend, Prabaker, the two enter Bombay’s hidden society of beggars and gang-sters, prostitutes and holy men, soldiers and actors, and Indians and exiles from other countries, who seek in this remarkable place what they cannot find elsewhere.

As a hunted man without a home, family, or identity, Lin searches for love and meaning while running a clinic in one of the city’s poorest slums, and serving his apprenticeship in the dark arts of the Bombay mafia. The search leads him to war, prison torture, murder, and a series of enigmatic and bloody betrayals. The keys to unlock the mysteries and intrigues that bind Lin are held by two people. The first is Khader Khan: mafia godfather, criminal-philosopher-saint, and mentor to Lin in the underworld of the Golden City. The second is Karla: elusive, dangerous, and beautiful, whose passions are driven by secrets that torment her and yet give her a terrible power.

Burning slums and five-star hotels, romantic love and prison agonies, criminal wars and Bollywood films, spiritual gurus and mujaheddin guerrillas---this huge novel has the world of human experience in its reach, and a passionate love for India at its heart. Based on the life of the author, it is by any measure the debut of an extraordinary voice in literature.

Another Bee Local favourtie. Love, honour and the Indian caste system mixed with pirates and the opium trade.

A long awaited sequel “we had twenty years to prepare - so did they”. Release: 23rd June

The setting here is December 1970 as the King shows up at the gate of the White House to request a

meeting with his Commander In Chief, Richard M. Nixon. Turns out Presley wants Nixon to make him an undercover agent in the fight against Communism, and what happened after that would seem ridiculously made up if there weren’t accounts from the White House archives and one of the most famous photographs of all time to document the event. Release: 24th June

The weather’s warming up, so why not get outside and go for a picnic?

11-19 June is National Picnic Week a celebration of picnicking that’s been happening in the UK for over a decade. Some see picnics as a romantic affair to be shared with a loved one, fine foods and a bottle of champagne. For others it’s an inexpensive family day out and often a reminder of childhood days. Or it could be a chance to spend time with friends, choosing to meet at a given location and each bringing along their favourite food and drinks to share.

The Oxford Dictionary describes a picnic as ‘an occasion when a packed meal is eaten outdoors, especially during an outing to the countryside.’

Whilst many do choose a countryside spot for their picnic there are many other options including local parks, the grounds of stately homes, the seaside and riverside settings. You can find recommendations for places to enjoy your picnic on the National Picnic Week website: www.nationalpicnicweek.co.uk

For many people a picnic consists of traditional items such as sandwiches, crisps, boiled eggs and cakes or fruit. Research shows however that Mediterranean options such as deli-style meats, olives, humus and crackers are also now commonly included and some choose to create items from special picnic recipe books.

One of the tricks of picnicking successfully is packaging items correctly to ensure food is not squashed beyond recognition

and drinks don’t leak. Carrying your picnic on a bike ride can create extra difficulties but add to the fun. Utilise specialist plastic containers, cling film, foil and sandwich bags, or buy items pre-packed. You could even splash out on a traditional picnic hamper. You can now buy a wide range of stylish brightly coloured plastic plates, cutlery and cups to enhance your experience. It’s a good idea to remember to take napkins or kitchen roll and some wet wipes, as eating a picnic can get a little messy, particularly if you are sat on a picnic rug rather than at a table. Do take some bags for your rubbish too; never leave litter behind.

It’s not just about the food and drink. Most picnics include some form of group exercise such as a walk, cycle, swim or game of rounders, in addition to a good laugh and a chat. This makes picnics a stress-busting, healthy activity. And if the weather isn’t kind you can still create a picnic atmosphere indoors. You could even try a ‘carpet picnic’ at home. Kids love them!

St Clement’s JelliesHalf the fruit, (cut the lem-ons and limes lengthways) and scrape out the fruit.Heat a lit-tle of one flavour juice and sprinkle over 2tsps of the gelatine, stir until dissolved. If not fully disolved re-heat the juice but do not boil. Stir in the remaining juice. Repeat for the next flavour.

Pour the jelly into the fruit halves to the top and chill until set. Cut into quarters with a very sharp knife to serve. Cheat with sachet jelly mixes and experiment with other fruits and flavours
