For the brief my group were given the designer Olafur Elliason to research and present our findings. Olafur is known for his sculptures and large scale installation art using elements such as light, water and air temperature to enhance the viewer’s experience. We looked into various projects of his such as “In Your Sun Machine” where viewers entered a room which was empty apart from a large circular hole punctured in the roof. Each morning sunlight would stream into the space through this aperture creating an elliptical and circular outline on the walls and floor. The beam of light shifts across the room as the day progresses. The movement of sun across the room is the cen- tral focus of the work. For our presentation we took alot of inspiration from his piece called the weather project which was held at the Tate Modern. It featured a giant semi-circular form made up of hundreds of mono-frequency lamps to represent the weather around us. A faint mist like cloud was used to create an atmosphere within the hall. The movement of sun across the room is the cen-tral focus of the work.

Above: In Your Sun Machine (1997)

As a group we were very interested in his large projection installtions as asposed to some of his large scultural work. For our presentation we took alot of inspiration from his piece called the weather project which was held at the Tate Modern. It featured a giant semi-circular form made up of hundreds of mono-frequency lamps to represent the weather around us. A faint mist like cloud was used to create an atmosphere within the hall. Taking this into consideration we thought how we could present our findings as an installation. We found an empty class room and used 2 projectors and a smoke machine to cre-ate an atmosphere similar to how Olafur would.

In the picture below you can the other animation which was projected directly onto the cieling, the animation reacts with a low frequency sub which was placed under the projector this was the central focus of the room.

Johnathan More Animation

The second projector was pointing onto a large blank wall with our manifesto points animation playing. The smoke machine gave a nice light effect on the projectors we were very happy with the results and the overall installation.

Picture from Group Installation

The feedback we got was very good and every one we spoke to said the ballons were great and gave the whole installation a ludic feel but while keeping to the feel of Olafur’s work.

Akriti created a manifesto based on Olafur’s work and process while tom and john had made two animations to be played simultaniously

Tom Mac Animation

We also experimented with using ballons to help build an atom-sphere but also add a ludic effect to the installation. We tried using glow sticks inside ballons but then found acual neon bal-lons and found these better suited.

Tanisha Glow Stick Experiment

The ballons worked very well in the installation and found people were drawn to play with them which deffinatly gave the installation a ludic effect.

Moving on from our succesfull installation i have furthered my research to look at more of Olafur’s work while developing my aritfact. I have been interested in his Sonne statt Regen proj-ect in Germany, i like the idea of project blending colours and light across a large scale and the atmosphere he creates using smoke fog and air temperature. I have been thinking about try-ing to create my own light installation but on a smaller scale to begin with and see how it develops from there.

Sonne statt Regen (Germany)

Thinking how i would house my light installation i have been looking at a restaurant in london called Sketch Gallery. In the night the gallery in transformed into a 360 audio/visual environ-ment. It works using twelve projectors and a 53 wide canvas creating a panoramic experience. Using this idea but on alot smaller scale i thought i could house my installation in a large picture frame which could be hung or placed on a stand. This would give me the advantage to project from a further point.

Three settings light switch rewired with a longer plug and switch

This is the basic frame of the light installation i have tried to stick to my design as closely as i can in the building process

This is my initial design for my installation, it is based on the idea of having a light emit from the centre of a box with perspex on all four sides covered by a canvas material with a switch to change the light settings, but if i was to put the projector in the middle in would not have enough room around it to give out a clear enough image, i have thought about projecting it from the outside but i will consider this in my redesign of it.

This is my redesign of the light installation i have gone for a square frame this time taking into consideration how the sketch gallery projects there moving wallpapers

Inspired by Olafur’s work i have created my own abstract piece which i will use to project onto my light installation. I have made this in Cinema4d (inital render to the right) which i then brought into photoshop, dupilcated and manipulated to cave the whole page, i decided to render my final peice as wireframe because when bringing it into aftereffects it could not handle the materials too well. The render i did colour i took a palette from one of Olafur’s installations. When designing it i took into consideration our manifesto points we had created for our presentation “Sensory experiences- sight, smells and texture. ’ Seeing yourself sensing’” ( manifesto point )

Page 7: Becoming...Olafur Eliason

This is an image from my final projection render and artifact, I have layered all of my cinema 4d render’s ontop of each other and created movement between each render with smooth transitions which at first can be hard to notice but with the change of colour becomes obvious i felt this replicates the feelings of space geometry and illusion in Olafur’s work. It gives the illusion that the picture has not changed but then you reliase it is not the same image as it was 30 seconds ago, i thought it reflected on how Olafur’s Work changes your perception of your surroundings. The animation was succesful on the light installation but from the feedback of others we agreed it gave its full affect when played on a big wall.
