ActingWHETHER FOR THE STAGE OR THE SCREEN, ACTING HAS TWO DISTINCT FACETS. THE FIRST IS A HOLISTIC APPROACH THAT ENCOURAGES YOU TO PUSH BOUNDARIES AND HONE YOUR ABILITY AS A NEW ACTOR TO CONNECT WITH YOUR AUDIENCE AND EXPRESS THE POWERFUL FEELINGS OF YOUR CHARACTERS. Technical TheaterTHE KEY TO SUCCESS FOR ANY PRODUCTION IS A COLLABORATIVE TEAM, WHERE ALL ROLES FROM LIGHTING TO PROPS, AND SOUND TO COSTUME MAKING, PLAY A VITAL PART IN THE CREATION OF AN ENTERTAINING SHOW.

Students who take this program will develop their knowledge of all parts of a production, as well as a specialization of their choosing. You will be up to date with industry standard programs, tools, construction techniques and safety protocols.

Visual ArtsTHE VISUAL ARTS PROGRAM WILL ALLOW YOU TO EXPLORE A VARIETY OF CREATIVE MEDIA AND DEVELOP SKILLS TO HELP YOU COMMUNICATE THROUGH YOUR ART WORK.

Through this program, you will study a range of visual art electives including 3D Design, Fashion, Textiles, Fine Art, Graphic Design, Illustration, Animation, Photography and Film. In the first year, you will create a well-rounded portfolio that showcases the skills you have learnt through a variety of mediums. In year two, you will format your portfolio to meet the specific requirements of your chosen colleges. IN TODAY’S MUSIC INDUSTRY, IT IS NOT ONLY IMPORTANT TO PLAY AN INSTRUMENT WELL, BUT TO ALSO CREATE MUSIC IN AN EVER-CHANGING INDUSTRY. THIS INCLUDES COMPOSITION, PRODUCTION AND BUSINESS KNOWLEDGE.

Students will focus their studies through selecting a principal instrument, an ensemble course, and a dedicated studio block (recital prep, composition/songwriting, or production). Students can also obtain university credit through this program with the AP Music Theory course, designed to prepare you to study music at a university or conservatory.

OUR INNOVATION ACADEMY OFFERS A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE EMPHASIZING THE ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS, ENABLED BY OUR EXCELLENT FACILITIES AND FACULTY.

Closely aligned with the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) fields of study, the curriculum enables students to learn and improve skills in design, coding, and building. From research, to brainstorming, to selection to prototyping, students will learn how to use the engineering design process to devise solutions that have enduring impact on the world. Taught by professional engineers, makers, and computer scientists, students will finish this program with the skills necessary to excel in University and in the workplace. In the first year, students will explore a range of subject areas including coding, communication, engineering, and ethical use of technology. They will also take classes in the core subjects for the high school diploma such as English and Mathematics. By the second year, students will select their track (Engineering or Computer Science).

Innovation Academy

ENGINEERING TRACKIn the Engineering track, students will learn the skills that engineers need to design products that drive our modern economy. They experiment with mechanical machines, learn how to design and program robots, and find creative ways to integrate technology into clothing. Students will learn practical skills such as soldering, 3D modelling, 3D printing, circuit design, and basic coding, all of which will help students bring their projects to life. In their final year, students will find a real-world need, and then design and build a solution to fulfil that need.

COMPUTER SCIENCE TRACKIn the Computer Science track, students will develop multifaceted coding skills that will prepare them for college and for their career. They will start with courses on web development, proceeding to more complex coding languages, and will complete projects using Object Oriented Programming. In their final year, students will work as part of a diverse software engineering team to design and produce a program that fulfils a real-world need.

MARK PHELANVISUAL ARTS TEACHERMFA, PAINTING, UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS, DARTMOUTH

BFA, PRINTMAKING, UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS, DARTMOUTH

Mark Phelan is a working artist from Southeastern Massachusetts with a studio in Kilburn Mills in New Bedford. He teaches painting and drawing at CSVPA Boston. Prior to working at CATS, Mark taught at University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth and Massachusetts College of Art and Design. He has a MFA in Painting and a BFA in Printmaking from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. Mark exhibits his work regularly and it is in the archived collections of University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth and Massasoit Community College, and in private collections around the world.

NATE PUNCHESTHEATER DIRECTORMA, THEATER EDUCATION, EMERSON COLLEGE

Nathaniel oversees the Drama program at CSVPA Boston. He trains students how to effectively use their voices, bodies, and imaginations both on and off stage. This aids in the development of their inner voices and self-confidence. Prior to joining the faculty atCATS academy, Nathaniel worked as a freelance teacher/technician/designer/director/actor in the greater Boston area. He served as the resident set designer for Stage 284 and directed programs for Boston Children’s Theater. Before that, Nathaniel worked as theTechnical Director for Actor’s Shakespeare Project and The Barnstormer’s Theater. Last year he filled in as the interim Theater Director for Brimmer and May School. Nathaniel received his Master’s in Theater Education from Emerson College.

ROLAND LEWANMUSIC TEACHERBA, FILM SCORING & COMPOSITION, BERKLEE COLLEGE OF MUSIC

Roland ‘Skip’ Lewan is a musician and composer from Georgia who has brought his passion for music to CSVPA Boston. He a gigging musician and his instruments include piano, saxophone, and voice. Currently Skip is a worship director at the Kings Chapel as well as avocalist in the group Green Line X-tension. He received his undergraduate in Film Scoring and Composition from Berklee College of Music. Skip has interned with award-winning composer Yuval Ron, in Los Angeles, where he worked on the project, Color Therapy for Samsung which was launched in London, Vancouver, Bangalore, New York City, Los Angeles, Amsterdam, Montreal, Paris, and Shanghai. He started the Music Industry program at CATS Academy which integrates music technology and the current state of the music industry into composition, production, and artist management.

KIM BARRYDEPARTMENT CHAIRBFA, FINE ARTS & SCULPTURE, RHODE ISLAND SCHOOL OF DESIGN

MFA, PAINTING, UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS

Kim M. Barry has been instrumental in establishing the fine arts programs in fashion, music, theater, and the digital arts. Ms Barry has a Master’s of Fine Arts in Painting from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture fromRhode Island School of Design and an Associate of Fine Arts from Colby Sawyer College. Ms Barry is a professional ceramic artist and painter. She is a member of Hatch Street Studios and owner of Clay Trout Pottery. She lives in a small coastal town in South Eastern Massachusetts.

SAM DONOVANFASHION TEACHERBFA, FASHION DESIGN, PARSONS, NEW YORK

During his degree, Sam focused on sustainable design techniques such as zero waste pattern drafting, which he used designing his thesis. While at Parsons, he interned for numerous designers and design companies, including Anna Sui, Gap, and Eileen Fisher,where he contributed zero waste designs to the company’s cut and sew line. Immediately upon graduating school, Sam was recruited to participate on Project Runway, where he placed 1st runner-up. He would later compete on an All Star edition of the series. Sam hasfreelanced for Macy’s and the Hamburg-based sustainable denim line Bridge & Tunnel, and now designs for private clients.

TRAVIS LIQUORIMUSIC TEACHER

TJ Liquori directs the chorus at CSVPA Boston and music directs the annual musical each spring. He also teaches all levels of keyboard classes, providing students with the tools they need to develop skill on a musical instrument and an understanding of music theory. Prior to joining CATS Academy, TJ taught as a K-5 general music teacher at 5 schools in Woburn, MA. He also wrote and directed the annual elementary school musical, as well as running an after school African drumming program and a singer-songwriter program. During the summers, TJ is a teaching artist for the Dedicated Performing Arts Team at The American School in Switzerland. He received his Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, where he also directed the student classical chamber choir “Crepusculum". Currently, TJ is an avid music theater composer. He has been commissioned by both The American School in Switzerland and Children’s Stage Adventures to write original children’s musicals for touring and non-touring performances, and has also had his work produced at The Auburn Players Community Theatre and Merry-Go-Round Playhouse in Auburn, NY.

JEFF NAPIORTECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT CHAIRMS, AERONAUTICAL SCIENCE, EMBRY RIDDLE AERONAUTICAL UNIVERSITY

Jeff Napior runs the CATS Innovation Lab where students benefit from a ‘design-make-use’ philosophy. This approach leverages open-ended exploration and tacit learning, therefore helping students complete projects typically related to the STEAM disciplines. Jeff worked for fifteen years as an aerospace engineer. He has hands-on experience with the electrical integration of flight vehicles ranging from fighter jets to orbital-class rockets. He has professionally trained US Navy aircraft technicians, tutored high school students and provided post-GED math lessons to incarcerated persons. Jeff is a huge sci-fi fan and an avid reader.

DEVYN ROGERSSTEM TEACHER

During the school year, Devyn spends his time teaching students the various methods and practices on how to develop software. He teaches three different levels of computer science, Intro to Programming, AP Computer Science, and Software Engineering. These courses explore topics such as algorithm development. Database management, web design, and the software development lifestyle. Outside of the classroom he also runs the Coding Club, which students have entered a national app building competition. He also shows the students in the Coding Club how to properly design video games. Devyn’s teaching experience started while in college, where he was in charge of running many leadership workshops and conferences. Prior to arriving at CATS, he had recently received his degree in Computer Science with a specialty in Software Engineering and was doing freelance work. Working as a freelance developer gave Devyn a chance to discover new and exciting ways he could put his knowledge to use. He has been a part of teams to develop videos games and applications that help manage influencers manage their social media following. Outside of the world of programming he enjoys doing graphic design and video editing. In his free time he is an avid gamer, who is involved with the local competitive gaming scene, and considers himself to be a professional binge watcher.

KENT ARCHER FINE ART TEACHERBFA, SCHOOL OF VISUAL ARTS, NEW YORK

Kent Archer brings to CSVPA Boston his experience as a working arts professional alongside his passion for teaching. He teaches the fundamentals of art and helps students build portfolios for college admission. Kent has taught art courses at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Sacred Heart High School in Kingston Massachusetts and numerous local art centers. Kent has worked professionally in the field of comic books since 2005 when he co-launched the popular webcomic − Dr McNinja. His work has been published by Archie Comics, IDW Publishing, Dark Horse Comics, and Topps Trading Cards. Kent attended the received his BFA in Cartooning from the School of Visual Arts.

AT CSVPA BOSTON WE OFFER A RANGE OF DIVERSE AND CREATIVE SUMMER COURSES.

EXCELLENT WAY TO PREPARE FOR FULL TIME STUDY!

ACCOMMODATION Our accommodation is located on campus and in brand new dorms. Each student will have their own en-suite and air-conditioned room. Each floor has its own comfortable student lounge which is the perfect place to hang out with your new friends. We offer a balance between supervision and independence to make sure that you are comfortable and happy in your accommodation.

MEALS Meals are included within the fees and include breakfast, lunch and evening meals all served on campus in the cafeteria. There are multiple delicious options for each meal and we can cater for all dietary requirements.

EVENING ACTIVITIESActivities might include a club night, fashion show, international showcase, staff vs student sports events, scavenger hunt, film night, casino night and many more! The incredible facilities available on the campus means that we can do anything that we want!

EXCURSIONS We have excursions on both Saturday and Sunday. Activities on Saturday might include a day trip to Newport Rhode Island, a city famous for its mansions, sailing and beaches. We also visit Canobie Lake, a large water and theme park and the perfect way to spend a summer’s day. Sundays we normally have several options available which might include a trip to downtown Boston or visit Wrenthem Village Outlets for all of your shopping needs with its 170 stores.
