I want to thank all of my mujercitas bellas, the young writers who made coming to Gilbert Elementary a pleasure and a privilege. All of you are filled with joyful spirit—maintain that in your life for it will carry you very far. ¡Abrazos!

Readers, please note that the theme of this collection is beauty. The writers focused on everything that they find beautiful in the world: weather, nature, family, school and friends, to name a few things. Very little time was focused on stereotypical physical beauty. This choice was intentional, in order to remind the young writers that beauty can mean many things which have nothing to do with physical beauty.

Quiero darle las gracias a mis mujercitas bellas, las escritoras que hicieron mi viaje a Gilbert Elementary un placer y un privilegio. Todas están llenas de un espíritu alegre—que sigan siempre con ese sentimiento porque les ayudara mucho. ¡Abrazos!

A los que leen esta colección, por favor de notar que la tema de las poesías tiene que ver con la belleza. Las escritoras describen todo lo que encuentran lindo en el mundo: el tiempo, la naturaleza, familia, la escuela y amigos, para nombrar algunas cosas. Dedicamos poco tiempo a la belleza física. Esta decisión fue intencional, para demostrar a nuestras escritoras que la belleza tiene que ver con muchísimas cosas, no solo con la belleza física.

Blang, bling, blung, bleng-mi hermano gritando.¡Veendeemos elotes por cinco pesos !-vendedores

mexicanos gritando.¡Ven aquí a recoger tu cuarto!-gritándome mi mamá.

Jajajejejijijuju-riéndose mi prima.Hzhzhzhz chiuuuuuu-roncando mi abuelita.

Weuweuweuweu-ambulancias con sus alarmas encendidas.

Auu auuu auu-lobos gritando a la luna llena.Mua mua mua mua-mi hermanito llorando.

Ala ruru nino ala ruru ya duérmase mi niño duermase ya-mi tia cantándole a mi primo.

Mi cobijita

Mi cobijita suavesita como mi osita.Su color es rosita con princesitas.

Cuando me acuesto con mi cobijita me pongo calientita.Mi abuelita querida me dio esta cobijita de princesitas.

No la he visto desde que me fui de Monclova.La recuerdo con esta cobijita.

Triste estoy porque no la he visto.Pero miro a mi cobijita y me digo – abuelita se que

siempre estás conmigo.Es mi vida mi abuelita.

Nosotras tenemos mucha conexión.Pero yo estoy feliz con mi cobijita.

Un paquete me sorprendio

Cuando me dieron un paquete tenía los ojos bellos de mi mamáEl corazón de mi abuelita

El olor de galleta de mi papaMi paquete era como mi vida

Como mis ojos mi cuerpo y mis manos es como todoMi cuerpo

Me encuentro adentro de mi paquete y veo los ojos de mi mamá

The Living Car

The car winked at me with its spotlights.The car winked at me with its windshields.

The car kissed me with its bumper.The car coughed at me with its smoke.

The car drove me crazy with it squeaky tires.The car hummed at me when we started the engine.

Mi paquete es como una flor.Los abrazos de mi abuelito.

Sus besitos que me da en el cachete.El anillo con que se casó y su collar que mi abuelita me

Las albercas tienen azul

Las albercas tienen agua azul como el cielo.El sacate y los arboles son como las ranas.El sol brilla mucho y te quema el cuerpo.

Nos gustan las flores que hay allí hay de differentes.Hay de colores que te gustan más y mucho.

Flores azules bonitas cielo que está arriba muy bonita como yo.

Beautiful Sounds in School

The sounds of gossip and drama go, “Ooooo look! She did…. They didn’t….”“Ding ding ding,” goes the bell when we come and go.At the carnival, Madonna sings, “Some boys hug me….”“Zzzzzssshhh,” sharpening broken pencils.Walking in the echo hallway, you go, “BOOM BOOM BOOM.”Very fast “ssssshwssshwssshw” pencils move when taking a test.“Squishky shquishky” go the markers on the dry erase board.

A FOCUS ON READING AND WRITING FOR ALL

Gemini Ink nurtures writers and readers and builds community through litera-ture and the related arts. At Gemini Ink we believe human story in all its diverse and complicated forms and genres—from poetry and fiction to memoir and oral tradition—is essential to developing compassion and richness in both individ-ual and community life. We encourage focused reading, writing, and exchange at every level, from elementary school students to incarcerated youth and from polished to the elder who has always wanted to record her family stories.

Writers in Communities (WIC) sends professional writers into diverse community settings to work alongside students of all ages, needs, interests, and abilities in free workshops based in oral traditions, reading, and creative writing.

Autograph Series and Breakthrough Thinkers present writers of national and international stature—many of them recipients of major prizes such as the Pulitzer or National Book Award—in free public performances.

University Without Walls (UWW) offers three semesters of fee-based reading groups and workshops and also many free literary events, all led by professional writers, scholars, and interdisciplinary artists.

Dramatic Readers Theater (DRT) features professional actors interpreting literary works in free performances, often accompanied by original music. Contributions and donations of time and resources are gratefully accepted.
