St. John the Baptist Parish Plymouth April 8, 2018 Dear Parishioners: Happy Easter! Easter Sunday and the week following it – all the way through the Second Sunday of Easter (also celebrated as Divine Mercy Sunday) – is called the Octave of Easter, and on each of its eight (hence the title octave”) days the Gospel at Mass features a different appearance of the Risen Lord to His disciples. Therefore, wishing you a Happy Easteragain is not mal- apropos. Speaking of Easter Sunday, thank you to all who came to celebrate with us! Both churches were packed for both Masses. What a great feeling! Thanks, too, to all who helped transform the environment from Holy Thursday through Good Friday into the radiance of Easter Sunday. I must confess: Im always caught off-guard by the beauty of Easter floral arrangements after what is usually a rather drab wintery Lenten season. It really is a sign of new life and hope, no matter what s going on outside. There was a bit of an incidentduring Communion at one of the Easter Masses that presents a wonderful teaching mo- ment.A woman in my line held out her hand to receive the Eucharist, and when I placed a Host in her hand, she asked if she could have one for her Mother, too. Okay,I thought, her mother must be sitting in the pew, unable to walk for one reason or another. So, I put a second Host in her hand, and she said, Can I have another for my sister? She sick at home, too.I took back the second Host and said, See me after Mass, and Ill take care of you. Now, it happens regularly that individuals coming up to receive Communion ask for a second host for a home-bound spouse or parent. Thats fine. In fact, its a practice to be encouraged. The sick, the home-bound and shut-ins should have ac- cess to the Eucharist for their spiritual and physical health. But heres the problem: the woman who approached me last Sun- day didnt have anything appropriate in which to carry the Eucharist home; she just held out her hands. Wrapping a Host in a sheet of Kleenex isnt adequate, either, and a clean handkerchief is only marginally better; the Host is not very sturdy, and a tissue or handkerchief in ones pocket or purse doesnt provide much protection from the kind of contact that could easily fracture or break one. Each of our parishes has a limited supply of proper carrying vessels called a pyxin the sacristy (the room where I put on my vestments). At SJB, the pyxes are in a basket on the window sill; at STA theyre in a drawer. These pyxes are there to be loaned out, short-term or long-term, to facilitate taking Communion home to the sick or immobilized loved one. Please ask me or an usher for a pyx if you need to use one. Just remember to bring it back when you no longer need it so that it can be put back into circulation. Thanks. Oh. Just a reminder: If you want to join us as St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday, April 28th, after the 5:30 p.m. Mass for supper (brats, burgers, chicken patties) and the talk by Sr. Julietha about Tanzanian life and culture please register at either parishs website so we can get a good handle on how much food to prepare. St. John the Baptist Parish Plymouth April 8, 2018

Dear Parishioners:

Happy Easter!

Easter Sunday and the week following it – all the way through the Second Sunday of Easter (also celebrated as Divine Mercy Sunday) – is called the “Octave of Easter,” and on each of its eight (hence the title “octave”) days the Gospel at Mass features a different appearance of the Risen Lord to His disciples. Therefore, wishing you a “Happy Easter” again is not mal-apropos.

Speaking of Easter Sunday, thank you to all who came to celebrate with us! Both churches were packed for both Masses. What a great feeling! Thanks, too, to all who helped transform the environment from Holy Thursday through Good Friday into the radiance of Easter Sunday. I must confess: I’m always caught off-guard by the beauty of Easter floral arrangements after what is usually a rather drab wintery Lenten season. It really is a sign of new life and hope, no matter what’s going on outside.

There was a bit of an “incident” during Communion at one of the Easter Masses that presents a wonderful “teaching mo-ment.” A woman in my line held out her hand to receive the Eucharist, and when I placed a Host in her hand, she asked if she could have one for her Mother, too. “Okay,” I thought, “her mother must be sitting in the pew, unable to walk for one reason or another.” So, I put a second Host in her hand, and she said, “Can I have another for my sister? She sick at home, too.” I took back the second Host and said, “See me after Mass, and I’ll take care of you.”

Now, it happens regularly that individuals coming up to receive Communion ask for a second host for a home-bound spouse or parent. That’s fine. In fact, it’s a practice to be encouraged. The sick, the home-bound and shut-ins should have ac-cess to the Eucharist for their spiritual and physical health. But here’s the problem: the woman who approached me last Sun-day didn’t have anything appropriate in which to carry the Eucharist home; she just held out her hands. Wrapping a Host in a sheet of Kleenex isn’t adequate, either, and a clean handkerchief is only marginally better; the Host is not very sturdy, and a tissue or handkerchief in one’s pocket or purse doesn’t provide much protection from the kind of contact that could easily fracture or break one.

Each of our parishes has a limited supply of proper carrying vessels called a “pyx” in the sacristy (the room where I put on my vestments). At SJB, the pyxes are in a basket on the window sill; at STA they’re in a drawer.

Julietha about Tanzanian life and culture please register at either parish’s website so we can get a good handle on how much food to prepare. Second Sunday of Easter April 8, 2018

St. John the Baptist Parish Leadership

Share your Gifts with St. John the Baptist Parish by serving as a

Trustee, Pastoral Council Member or School Board Member

We are looking for parishioners who have a desire for spiritual growth in themselves and their parish, an enthusiasm about the future direction of the parish and school, a willingness to listen and to speak honestly, and flexibility and openness with people and ideas. Please pray for one another so that as a faith community we “call for the leaders” who will best serve our parish.

Pastoral Council and School Board Member Selection ~ Discernment Discernment of pastoral council and school board committee membership is a process of prayer, formation, and the deepening of people’s relationship with the Lord as individuals and as a community. The selection is not a race or a contest, but a call – the traditional meaning of election in the Church. Discernment gathers the community in prayer, lifting its needs to God, asking for an openness to God’s will for us, and God’s presence in our midst and ministry. The actual discernment of new pastoral council and school board committee members occurs in the context of a meeting involving prayer, the naming of gifts that an individual brings to the parish community and a sense of the parish community’s needs. Discernment involves those who have an interest in serving on the pastoral council or school board and the current members. Through prayer and wisdom of experience, the current members participate in discernment and selection of new members.

All parish members are invited to express their interest in joining Pastoral Council or School Board by attending the respective discernment meetings.

Pastoral Council Discernment Meeting: Tuesday, May 8—6:30pm in the School Conference Room

School Board Committee Discernment Meeting: Thursday, June 7—6:30pm in the School Conference Room

If you have questions regarding Pastoral Council or School Board Committee please contact any of the current members or visit the website at www.sjbplymouth.org.

Parish Trustee Selection ~ Election

Nominations are Now Being Accepted! Is the Spirit Calling You?

The parish trustee election is scheduled for the weekend of May 19 and 20, 2018.

Nomination forms are available in the back of church, and at the parish office. Please return nomination forms to

the parish office by Monday, April 23. The rules governing election of parish trustees come from Wisconsin State

Statute 187.9 that stipulates: Trustees are to be elected “from and by the congregation”. Directives regarding elec-

tion of trustees are contained in the Parish Corporate Bylaws.

STA is looking at starting a Prayer and Worship Committee.

SJB will continue with the current Faith Formation model and STA will continue with the Family Faith

Formation program.

There will be a presentation on Saturday, April 28th following the 5:30 Mass at STA depicting the life and culture

of Tanzania. Please watch the bulletin for details.

The Building and Grounds Committee is getting bids to replace the boiler.

Both the Confirmation and First Communion retreats went well.

We are still waiting to re-schedule the discernment meeting with Barb Vite, Director of Stewardship for the Arch-

diocese of Milwaukee. Please watch the bulletin for more information regarding a new meeting date.

The SJB Pastoral Council (PC) met on March 13, 2018. Listed below are

a few of the topics discussed at the meeting. If interested, the minutes

from the meeting are available on the parish website in their entirety.

The next PC meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 10th at 6:30 p.m. in the School Conference Room and all parishioners are

invited to attend. Please join us if you can!
