There was once a beautiful girl named Esther.When her father and mother died, Esther's cousin

Mordecai

broughther up. Esther honored hercousinby obeying him as a good daughter.

Esther lived in Persia. But, Esther was not Persian.She was Jewish. Her ancestors came toPersia

asprisoners of war. In Esther's day, manyJews lived in Persia.

The men ateapart from thewomen who werealso banquetingwithQueenVashti. The

drunken Kingordered QueenVashti

to wear

the royal crownand show herbeauty.

Queen Vashtirefused.

The King of Persiaheld ahuge banquet for princes

from all over the world.

To show that ladiesshould honor theirhusbands, the king

passed a law whichtook the crown fromVashti. She was no

longer queen.

queen. Out of allthe beautiful girlsinthe kingdom, theking chose Estheras his wife. He setthe royal crownupon her head.Esther did not tell

One day heoverheardtwo palaceservants

planning tomurder theking. Mordecai sent awarning which saved

the king's life. Theservants were hanged,and Mordecai's name

was written in theking's record book.

Second in command to the king wasa rich man called Haman. Everybody

bowed when Haman

passed by.Everybody -

except one man.As a Jew, Mordecai worshipedonly the living God.

Haman

hated Mordecai so muchhe decided to kill him and all the

Jews in Persia. How dreadful!Wicked Hamantricked theking into signing alaw thatat a certain time everyJew in the kingdomwould be killed.

It wasa terriblelaw. Both Jews and

Persians mourned.But remember -

Godhad made Esther

queen. And she wasa Jewess. Would shekeep hersecret fromthe king? Or, wouldshe risk death to tryand saveher people?

God gave Esther aclever idea. She invited the kingand Haman

to a banquet. There the king promised

her anything she asked. "Let the king and Haman

come to the banquet . . . tomorrow," Esther replied.Then she would tell the king what she wanted.

Meanwhile, Haman

prepared ahuge gallows to hang Mordecai.

That night the king couldn'tsleep. Reading thecourt

records he saw that Mordecaihad never been rewarded forsaving his life. Next morning,

the king askedHaman,"What shall be done for

the man the kingdelights to honor?"

Haman

wasdelighted.He thought

the kingmeant him!

Hamanhad come to ask the king'spermission to hang Mordecai. The

gallows were all ready. Now that couldwait. Excitedly, Hamanpoured out hissuggestions. "Dress the man in the

king's robe andcrown."

"Sit him on the king's horse.Command a royal prince to lead the

man through the city forall to see.""Hasten, and do so for Mordecai theJew," the king commanded Haman.

Howdo you think Hamanfelt as heled Mordecai in honor around the city?

He hated Mordecai even more thanbefore. "Just wait," Hamanmay have

thought. "He'll

soon be dead- alongwithall theother

Jews."

Later that day, Haman

and the king arrived

at Queen Esther'sbanquet. "What is

your petition?" the

king asked. He had notforgotten his promise.Pointing to Haman,Queen Esther told theking all about Haman's

wicked plot. "Hanghim!" the king said.

Then the king passed another law allowing the Jewsto defend themselves. They were saved! Mordecai

became second in command to the king and all theJews rejoiced andgave gifts to one another.Even today, Jewish people remember how Godsaved themthrough

beautifulQueenEsther.

God knows we have done bad things, which He calls sin.The punishment for sin is death, but God loves us so
