There is no perfect age at which to learn. When you stretchyour mind and challenge your limitations, you open the doorto possibility and create a pathway to achieving your goals.

At P&G, we recognize the importance of education and arecommitted to supporting African-American children andyoung adults so they can achieve a better tomorrow. It’s atradition that started with our founder—when Mary McLeod-Bethune called upon James N. Gamble to help make herdream for a college for African-American women a reality. Heanswered the call, and Florida’s Bethune-Cookman Collegewas born. Gamble felt that it was essential to supportprograms that furthered education and created increasedopportunities for African-American youth. More than acentury later, Procter & Gamble is determined to preserve this ideal.

Having contributed millions of dollars to the United NegroCollege Fund and nurturing countless young Blackprofessionals—as engineering and technology interns in P&Gresearch and development laboratories; as INROADScollegians mentored by corporate executives and plantemployees; and as new hires being challenged and trained tosucceed—P&G strongly supports education.

Beyond scholarships and internships, P&G also reaches out to primary and secondary schools. Through the creation of original health education programs such asCrest Oral B Healthy Smiles and Always curriculum-basedschool programs, P&G is connecting African-American youthwith the tools and information needed to establish healthy,long-life habits.

Give a man a fish and he’ll eat today, but teach a man to fishand he’ll eat forever. At P&G, we understand the importanceof working with diverse businesses. Providing opportunitiesthat lead to personal success is the cornerstone of ourcommitment to strengthening the African-Americancommunity. From our Minority Supplier Diversity Program, which spends nearly $2 billion annually with minority- andwomen-owned businesses to sponsoring expos andempowerment conferences, we connect African-Americanswith job opportunities and job training. It’s tradition.

For more than 100 years, P&G has empowered African-Americans by recruiting heavily from Historically BlackColleges & Universities and maintaining a national network ofpartnerships with educational institutions, businessorganizations, and community groups like the NationalCouncil of Negro Women, NAACP, and National Urban League.

We instituted employee diversity programs before the 1964Civil Rights Act mandated them. At P&G, we promote peoplefrom within to fulfill top leadership. We consciously choose togrow and nurture today’s new hires into tomorrow’s leaders.

Another impactful step to nurture progress and build astronger community was taken by P&G during 2006. Incelebration of Black History Month, we sponsored “AFRICANAMERICAN LIVES” – a groundbreaking four-part PBS serieshosted by renowned scholar Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Theinspirational documentary used DNA analysis, genealogicalresearch, and storytelling to trace family histories back toAfrica and spotlight past success to bring hope to a better future.
