During the reign of tsar Simeon I Bulgaria became one of the most powerful countries in Europe extending on three seas: the Egean Sea, the Black Sea and the Adriatic Sea. After 167 years of domination, the brothers Asenand Petar created the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. Our country was extended on three seas again during the reign of tsar Ivan Asen II.

Bulgarian folk customs and holidays

Every foreigner who comes in Bulgaria for a first time is really surprised of the number of holidays and celebrations which the Bulgarian holiday calendar is filled with. Most of the holidays dating from centuries and their roots are heathen. They have deep relation with the everyday life of the ancient Bulgarians. Most of them nowadays are vanished but some still remain as “keepers” of the national originality.
