members of the class of 2015 hosted some very special guests at Beaumont’s annual grandparents day on April 24. About 150 girls and “grands” came together in the St. Angela merici chapel, where they enjoyed a prayer service, followed by lunch and entertainment from Beaumont’s musicians and singers, and updates from the Academic Scholars. while the girls scooted back to class, grandparents heard a brief description of the many exciting courses and extra-curricular events Beaumont has to offer. thanks to all the grandparents who were able to join us for the event.

PreSident’S noteS

Dear Friends,

Every Monday this final quarter, I am amazed to hear the girls’ accomplishments from the previous weekend announced over the PA. These awards run the gambit: from science to Shakespeare to Mock Trial to French to Athletics to web design to robotics to Fine Arts. Like you, I am filled with pride when I hear of these achievements.

This issue of the Beaumont News highlights some of the academic accomplishments of our girls. These accolades indicate that Beaumont is fulfilling its responsibility to our students, helping them to develop their intellectual gifts as fully as possible. Of special interest, is the new Academic Scholars Program instituted last year, and the pre-engineering class that was offered this year. Both of these offerings are an attempt to continue our successes of the past and to prepare our girls for the future. Beaumont provides them not only with the basics to excel in college, but also the foundation to exceed beyond college.

Beaumont’s “life, leadership, service” is more than a motto – it’s our Catholic faith in action. The foundation of our curriculum is our Catholic faith and our Catholic values. These are the pillars on which each student builds her own career of life, leadership, and service.

I hope this issue builds up your pride in the Beaumont Community and Beaumont Education.

Sincerely,

Sr. Gretchen Rodenfels, OSU President

At Beaumont School a visit by author and activist Sr. Helen Prejean, CSJ, and sold-out performances of the play Dead Man Walking successfully culminated a school wide project where students, faculty and staff spent several months examining capital punishment in the United States.

“We received information about the Dead Man Walking School Theatre Project about a year ago and we felt it was an opportunity to highlight an important theme of Catholic Social teaching,” says Kate Bernardo, English and Drama teacher, and director of Dead Man Walking. “We felt the Beaumont community was being called to reflect and discuss our society’s response to violence.”

Together with Campus Ministry directors Sue Reilly and Sr. Erin Zubal, OSU, Ms. Bernardo developed a plan that included

reading Sr. Helen’s first book, using her work in various classes for discussion, producing the play and inviting Sr. Helen to the Beaumont campus.

The entire Beaumont Community – students, administration, faculty and staff shared the experience of reading the book Dead Man Walking, discussing capital punishment in America. “Our

purpose is to encourage our community to consider, discuss and explore the issues of capital punishment, examining all points of view as part of a spiritual and moral journey,” says Sr. Erin Zubal, OSU, of Beaumont’s Campus Ministry.

The Beaumont School Drama Department presented Dead Man Walking by Tim Robbins, based on the book by activist Sr. Helen Prejean, March 8 through March 11, 2012. Beaumont was thrilled to have Sr. Helen speak on campus, meet the cast of the play and attend the opening night performance.

Sr. Helen Prejean is well-known for her advocacy to end the death penalty in America. She began her work in prison ministry in 1981 in New Orleans, LA. The Roman Catholic sister from the order the Congregation of St. Joseph has witnessed five executions in Louisiana

and today educates the public about the death penalty by lecturing, organizing, and writing. As the founder of “Survive,” a victim’s advocacy group in New Orleans, she continues to counsel not only inmates on death row but the families of murder victims as well. She will soon release her third book River of Fire: My Spiritual Journey.

Sr. Helen’s visit included a promotional visit on TV3’s Good Company, followed by a presentation to over 500 high school students including the entire student body of Beaumont, as well as guests from Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School and Notre Dame Cathedral Latin. Later in the day, Sr. Helen had lunch with the 27 members of the cast and crew of Beaumont’s

production. The cast included senior Leslie Cancelliere as Sr. Helen Prejean, and Benedictine student Conor Devers as convicted murderer Matthew Poncelet. Additional cast members included Kaleigh Wilkie-Smith, Marina Oney, Gabriela Leskur, Sam Graf, Anastasia Fiala, Caity Cook, Anna Grushetsky, Savannah Ross, Alexa Brown, Shannon Connelly, Kathleen Russell, Michaela Burke, Megan Jones, and Molly Cogan, with most of the cast playing at least two characters apiece.

After the opening night performance, Sr. Helen took questions from the audience. The cast and crew presented her with a check for $300 for her Pull-the-Plug fund, taken from the proceeds of ticket sales. This fund supports two key projects, the Dead Man Walking School Theatre Project and the Catholic Mobilizing Network to End the Use of the Death Penalty.

academic scholarsAt Beaumont, Academic Scholars offers an entirely new level of educational exploration and enrichment.

April 2009: A casual conversation between Margaret (Peggy) Connell, at the time the principal of Beaumont School, and Gretchen Santo, Chair of the Science Department, developed into a formal idea. The topic: what could Beaumont do for its most talented students – those who achieved unilaterally in the 90th percentile and above? Traditional “gifted and talented” programs often force a student out of her regular classes, and generate extra-curricular projects. With Beaumont’s already rigorous academic schedule in place, Peggy and Gretchen wondered what the school could do for the girls who were ready for another layer of engagement without adding an additional financial or academic burden.

The answer, Peggy thought, was an academic club with a series of events, a club that students would have to qualify for and maintain “membership” in, with honors courses and overall academic achievement. For the girls who were invited into the Academic Scholars program, Peggy envisioned a series of field trips, visiting speakers, mentorships and other activities to offer learning opportunities outside the classroom. So who would be invited? Those girls scoring in the 90th percentile on their entrance exam.

Today, Academic Scholars is still a work in progress, but a very successful one. Last year, the first year, saw a membership of 53 students, 9th and 10th graders; and 77 students this year in 9th, 10th and 11th grades. The number will increase again by about 25 as the freshman class of 2016

begins this coming fall. As the director of the Academic Scholars program, Gretchen Santo expects that one quarter of the student body – about 100 girls – will qualify and participate in the program on a regular basis.

Student trips are scheduled for the day after exams each quarter, so no one misses any part of a regular school day. Students actively participate in the decision-making process to offer exposure to a wide variety of disciplines.

Last year, the field trips included visits to the Great Lakes Science Center where the girls conducted research in the biomedical technology lab. In January, 14 students went to the Cleveland Botanical Garden for a “Patterns in Nature” investigation that touched on biology, math and art. In

March 2011, 24 students, perhaps inspired by popular television programs such as CSI went to the Cuyahoga County Coroner’s Office and Forensics Laboratories. Students received an overview of the Coroner’s Office and careers available there, an interview with a pathologist and a guided tour of the autopsy suite. “That trip wasn’t for everyone,” Gretchen says, “some girls were very excited, and others not at all, but it’s the girls who decide where we’ll go. We toss out a lot of ideas and they determine what they’d like to do.”

She also frets the first year trips too heavily favored science. “It’s what I know,” Gretchen says. But last Spring she attended the annual Fair on the Square a “trade-show” for teachers looking for field trips and experiences

from science to the arts and beyond throughout Northeast Ohio. “These trips are a different kind of learning experience,” she adds. “It’s not overt classroom learning; it’s much more subtle. I hope that students make the connection between what they learn in class and applying that with these trips to discover an interest or a career they didn’t know existed.”

This year the Academic Scholar trips included a visit to Prosperity Jewelry, a 20+ year old studio owned by Laura Bosse ’76 and Cat Zurchin in Mid-town Cleveland. Lessons to be found in the glass jewelry-making operation included design and management work, manufacturing, cost control and marketing. In January the girls combined a tour of The Plain Dealer with a historic tour of the City of Cleveland, and in March they went to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, where they had a behind-the-scenes tour and talked with zookeepers about the Special Survival Program and Training and Housing Animals Presentation.

Additionally, in smaller groups, and occasionally one or two girls have participated in everything from Women in Engineering events to Young Audiences of Cleveland ArtWorks Summer Internships; a CSI Day at Baldwin-Wallace University, a Bioneers Conference, Cleveland’s Ingenuity Fest, internships at The Cleveland Clinic and Project YESS (Youth Empowered to Succeed through Sailing), a week-long voyage as a crew member on historic tall ship.

One unusual project Beaumont’s Academic Scholars tackled is the CWRU Great Lakes Game Project Challenge, a competition for high school students to create computer games. The team competed May 5 and won first and second place trophies. “I had no previous knowledge about

computer gaming, I’m more of a nose in a book type of person,” says Michelle Park ’14. “Normally I would not have signed up for this project, but being in Academic Scholars has encouraged and given me numerous opportunities and possibilities in expanding my interest and experiences.”

Another exciting project taken on by Academic Scholars is the AWT RoboBot competition held April 28 at Lakeland Community College. The competition, now in its second year, hosted 24 teams inviting them to build a robot that outmaneuvered its opponents. Beaumont was the only all-girls school to compete as well as the only Catholic school on the roster, sponsored by Christopher Tool in Solon. Beaumont’s team Ana Maria Vargas, Molly Cogan, and Elizabeth Stanitz, created a robot called Deus Ex Machina, which beat all its challengers, coming in second place after a split decision from the judges in the tied final round.

“Deus Ex Machina is the first real robot I’ve worked on,” says Ana Maria Vargas ’15. “I had the chance to really get my hands dirty with welding, electrical work, and machining metal parts.” “This is my first time working on a robot and I want to continue building robots throughout high school,” says Molly Cogan ’15. “I’m excited to start working on a new robot for next year where I am sure we’ll dominate the competition.”

“Working with robots as a career would be a dream come true for me,” Ana Maria adds. “I love the hands-on

approach to engineering they require, yet they have just the right amount of computer programming thrown in. There is so much room for creativity and innovation. Robotics is a rapidly advancing field, one whose full potential has yet to be discovered. Someday, robots could be part of our everyday lives.”

“Academic Scholars has opened me to so many new experiences and opportunities,” Molly says. “As a member of Academic Scholars I have learned the importance of trying something new because you never know how rewarding the experience will be. I am so thankful to be part of such an amazing program.”

An additional aspect to the Academic Scholars program is mentoring. The eligibility requirements include “working with a mentor or independent study project approved by the Scholars program.” The mentoring is meant to work in tandem with the Junior Shadow Day as well as the Senior’s Project REAL. To date, some outstanding partnerships have been forged with professionals at Case and John Carroll, with Beaumont students working on true research projects in chemistry, nutrition and genetic research. Academic Scholars continue to be “on the lookout” for mentors to partner with in science, art, business and more.

“The Academic Scholars program has been an exceptionally rewarding experience for me as a teacher,” Gretchen Santo says. “To see the fire lit within these girls, to see their excitement and enthusiasm, their love of learning new things, has brought them the opportunity to make good friendships and talk with different people while it’s broadened their horizons and added a level of pride and excitement to learning.”

entrePreneuriAl effortS

Beaumont is the proud recipient of a grant from the veale foundation, as part of its new initiative, the veale youth entrepreneurship forum (vyef). with this effort, the veale foundation hopes to inspire budding entrepreneurs through exceptional educational opportunities.

leading the vyef is business professional and teacher greg malkin. “the information students receive from entrepreneurship curricula is relevant and immediately applicable, whether to an existing baby-sitting business, a student-run school spirit wear shop, or other teen-driven venture,” malkin says. “these real-life lessons will carry into whatever career a student may choose to pursue later in life.”

Plans are underway to apply the grant to an entrepreneurial endeavor through the Academic Scholars program. more information will be available in forthcoming editions of Beaumont news.

mentoring “with dr. tartakoff, i executed experiments that were designed and executed with the purpose of investigating the process of cell fusion, or meiosis, in yeast cells visually through the method of genetically tagging proteins in these cells to adapt a fluorescent coloration when observed under a microscope. the strain of yeast utilized was S. cerevisiae, and the cells were prepared and genetically altered via the hypothesis-prescribed plasmid method and cultured to promote growth and maturation.”

AchievementS and awards

Beaumont students excel in science and we can prove it, as the girls bring home award after award in a wide variety of disciplines. At the Northeast Ohio Science and Engineering Fair, we received 1 Gold Medal, 5 Silver, 5 Bronze and 1 Honorable Mention. Plus, Beaumont students received 21 of the 82 sponsored professional awards. In addition to strength in science, competitors must also exhibit excellence in mathematics, writing and grammar, statistics, data analysis and presentation skills.

At the Western Reserve District V Science Day, Beaumont received the Outstanding School Award based on the overall excellence of our students’ projects. This is the eighth time in 12 years we have received this recognition. Additionally, our girls were high achievers in various categories (see the list below).

Other highlights from the science and technology labs include:

• Sarah DiGeronimo ’12 competed in the Goodyear’s Engineering Career Day in Akron on Saturday, April 28, and won a $5,000 scholarship to study engineering at Cleveland State University.

• Alexis Garnek ’12 won a $1,000 scholarship for her website “Cake in a Cup” from the Cool Tech Challenge. Maria Ianni ’12 was also recognized as a finalist in this contest, a website development contest for high school students, created by the Northeast Ohio Software Association.

• Twelve students qualified and competed at Ohio’s State Science Day held at the Ohio State University. They received six superior and four excellent awards.

• At the “BEST Medicine” Engineering Fair held at the Inventors Hall of Fame STEM School in Akron, Ohio, Danielle Dejak ’13 received a Bronze medal in the Health/Medicine category and Erika Kleck ’14 received an Honorable Mention in Musculoskeletal/Orthopedics. The BEST Medicine

engineering fair, Northeast Ohio’s premier engineering fair devoted exclusively to students interested in exploring biomedical engineering, brings together the most talented and innovative students to interact with each other and with leaders in medical device research and development.

• The Beaumont team that created a game app with the theme of wind power took first and second place trophies in the Great Lakes Game Project Challenge at Case Western Reserve University.

We are extremely proud of these budding Beaumont scientists, and look forward to hearing great things from them in their college years and beyond.

Beaumont junior Jane Kim ’13 (left) was the second runner up in the fourth annual “Stop The Hate: Youth Speak Out!” essay contest sponsored by the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage. Over 1,800 students from seven Northeast Ohio counties shared their stories describing an act of discrimination and their own response with a plan of action to affect change. Essays were scored on content, writing, originality and creativity. The top ten finalists who achieved the highest scores on the written essays made up less than 1% of the total essays received. Jane received a four-year scholarship of $15,000. She is shown here with Grand Prize winner Gabrielle Jones, a student at Martin Luther King, Jr. High School in Cleveland (center) and first runner-up Hannah Schmidt of Brush High School in Lyndhurst.

the mock trial team did an excellent job at the regional competition, calm and cool in the face of tough competition. Beaumont’s Prosecution team went up against Ashland High School, and Kaila Johnson ’13 took Best Attorney honors. The second trial this year was against Solon High School, and despite exceptional presentation skills from attorneys Leat Perez ’12 and Anna Grushetsky ’13, Beaumont did not take the second trial and did not advance to the State competition. Moderator Pat Mulhall reports that despite the loss, which was a very close match, the girls enjoyed both the preparation and the proceedings and had a wonderful experience.

Beaumont’s softball team had a wildly successful spring trip to Myrtle Beach, SC in April. The Blue Streaks (9-2) won all five games; the last one ended 9-1 in a victory against Lechter County (Kentucky) at the Grand Strand Classic. The Grand Strand is a girls’ high school fast pitch tournament open to teams throughout the country.

Pitcher Emily Iott ’15 went the distance, tossing a no-hitter and striking out six. She also collected four singles in five at-bats, while shortstop Kat Hyland ’12 hit two doubles and had a sacrifice fly, good for three RBI.

The team played exceptionally well both offensively and defensively. Not only were they commended for their excellent playing on the field, but they were also highly complimented on their sportsmanship and conduct throughout the entire trip.

This spring senior Anna Brick set a new Beaumont Varsity Diving Record with a score of 202.95 (previously 196.85) and she broke the Butler Natatorium Record (previously 199.00)! Her name will go up on the record wall at the Butler Natatorium at Hathaway Brown, Beaumont’s current practice site, and also the location for all Beaumont home meets. In February Anna qualified for the OHSAA State Championships, where she placed 14th out of 24. She was named a (Lake County) News Herald High School Sports All-Star in March. Congratulations, Anna!

DramaMembers of Beaumont’s International Thespian Troupe traveled to Akron in January to perform the one act Governing Alice, a modern adaptation of Antigone at the NE Ohio Area Thespian Conference. Their performance earned them an invitation to perform at the Ohio Thespian Conference in March. Students in the cast and crew include: Alexa Brown ’12, Leslie Cancelliere ’12, Dora Farona ’14, Megan Jones ’13, Emily Kolograf ’13, Gabriela Leskur ’12, Savannah Ross ’13, Elaine Sims ’12, Shannon Suttles ’12, and Kaleigh Wilke-Smith ’12. At the State level, the conference responder cited the cast’s exceptional work as an ensemble, their energy and their credibility.

Also at State Conference, Leslie Cancelliere earned a Superior Rating and an invitation to attend the International Conference for her performance in the Monologue Individual Event. Kaleigh Wilke-Smith earned an Excellent Rating for her performance in the Solo Musical Performance Individual Event. And, Beaumont’s first-ever Tech. Challenge Team (Dora Farona, Savannah Ross,

Elaine Sims, Shannon Suttles, and Kaleigh Wilke-Smith) competed well, placing in the top three teams in several events.

World LanguageKathleen Russell ’12 was a winner in the 2011 National French Honor Society’s Creative Writing Contest. Her original fable, Les Grenouilles et le Puits (The Frogs and the Well) was the First Place Winner in the IV-V division of this national competition. Kathleen contended against entries from 73 chapters in the US and Canada, and her story will be published in the spring edition of the Society’s national publication L’Elan.

In October, Maria Nichta ’12 won first place in the AATF East – Central Region and placed second in the 2011 National French Week Essay Contest.

Beaumont has received a charter from the AATF (American Association of Teachers of French) and has initiated a new honor society this year, La Société Honoraire de Français, The National French Honor Society.

Spanish Book AuthorsFifteen girls wrote beautiful books in Spanish for the students at Santo Domino School in Chiltiupan, El Salvador. With hundreds of children in the grade school, and only about 100 books, the library at Chiltiupan is severely under stocked. Students in Barb Sosnowski’s Spanish Class took the time to write a story with photos or illustrations for these students. Working with volunteers from St. Dominic Church in Shaker Heights, they will soon be in the hands of the book-hungry students in El Salvador. Congratulations to all the authors.

The firm helps companies address corporate and community issues, manage risk and corporate responsibility and sustainability practices, while focusing on increasing the company’s competitive advantage and promoting brand leadership. BrownFlynn is the first U.S.-certified training organization for the Global Reporting Initiative and is also a Silver Consultancy Partner to the Carbon Disclosure Project. In addition to training and advising clients, Margie has spoken at local and national conferences and venues and has also published several articles on sustainability, corporate citizenship and entrepreneurship.

Before BrownFlynn, Margie spent over a decade at National City Bank, first in Investor Relations, and eventually as co-vice president and manager of National City Corporation’s corporate communications department with Barb Brown. “Barb and I were job sharing; we were having our families at the time,” Margie recalls. The duo was promoted three times in the job share and they grew the department from 2½ people to 22. “It was a very rewarding time for us, and we had a sense of obligation. We were the first women to job share and be in a position of leadership at National City; we were blazing a trail for women and men who wanted flexibility in their jobs.”

When the duo decided to open their own firm, National City was their first client. “The industry and leadership were changing, and we were fortunate to have their support,” she says. Today BrownFlynn has 14 full time staff with three adjunct trainers outside of Cleveland and clients all over the world.

Margie is adamant her success would not be possible without the help and encouragement of her business partner and friend Barb Brown, and that of her husband, Danny, a manager at Sysco.

The couple has three sons, Patrick 24, a 2010 graduate of John Carroll University, Ryan 22, a 2012 graduate of the University of Dayton, and Kyle 20, a football player and pre-med student at Johns Hopkins.

She expresses deep gratitude as well for her years at Beaumont. “I loved my days at Beaumont,” she recalls. “It was there I had the first opportunity to develop my leadership skills – everyone was so supportive.” She recalls approaching the principal Sr. Susan Mary about organizing a dance marathon in the gym to honor classmate Marian Kinkopf, who died in a traffic accident. “That was a first for Beaumont. When we asked Sr. Susan Mary she didn’t say ‘oh no, we can’t do that,’ she said ‘if you can make it happen, go for it.’ We raised thousands of dollars, which back then, was a lot of money.

“I remember being involved in those meetings and realized that communication was a critical skill for any student,” Margie adds. “I remember Sr. Renee making sure our writing was good, but more, she challenged us to present well, to have excellent verbal communication skills too, and that was a benefit for me at Miami University and well beyond.”

Margie and Barb’s success have hardly gone unnoticed. Regarding these honors, Margie comments, “It’s beyond humbling, it’s unnerving and almost embarrassing. But the real evidence of our work is not in awards, but in the positive impact we make in the world; that’s the judgment of our success.”

She pauses. “My dad always teased that I went to Beaumont School for ‘wayward women,’ because of the wall around the school. Fate and faith have led me to where I am today and always guide me, and Beaumont is a very big part of that.”

Beaumont Alumnae and Family enjoy the Ursuline Celebration: Nancy Miller Beringer ’52, John Beringer, Linda Beringer, Tim Beringer and Ethel McBride Moran ’51.

Sr. Gretchen Rodenfels stops to say hello to one of Beaumont’s legacy families – Katie Blenner Creslein ’79 and her mother, Martha Ritchie Blenner ’47.

Last fall, Beaumont’s President Sr. Gretchen Rodenfels, Development Director Barb DiTurno and Alumnae Manager Mary Kelley Ebner traveled to Columbus. Beaumont alumna Sara Adams Wilcox ’68 hosted a gathering at her home for area Beaumont alumnae. They had a great time sharing Beaumont’s successes and updating friends on all that is going on ‘behind the wall.’ Joining them were Mary Adams ’69, Jane Gauntner Ryan ’66, Anne Stefanov Varsanyi ’68, Lucy Oliphant Buzzee ’67, Rochelle Nowinski Young ’95, Laura Holzhauer ’95 and Marie Michelle Luna Javitch ’89. These wonderful Beaumont girls have plans to start a Beaumont Alumnae chapter in Columbus. More information will definitely follow!

Sr. Gretchen and Barb DiTurno traveled to Chicago and were graciously hosted by Beaumont alumna Patrice McCauley Hulseman ’76 in her home. We know that Beaumont prepares its young women for life, leadership and service, but Patrice really rises to the top with her multi-tasking skills. She hosted a wonderful event while coordinating the daily activities of her 13 children! It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening filled with good food, drink and much conversation about Beaumont past and present.

In early March, Sr. Gretchen and Barb DiTurno visited the Sunshine State and enjoyed meeting many Beaumont Alumnae in Florida. The first stop was in Fort Lauderdale, to the home of gracious

host Connie Passalacqua Brandt ’60 for a wonderful evening of reminiscing and sharing of Beaumont’s good news. The next stop was Naples, for the annual Ursuline Florida Celebration on March 4th. This annual event, hosted by the Ursuline Sisters, Beaumont School and Ursuline College sponsored by Mary Jane & Jack Breen at the Royal Poinciana Club is a celebration of the Ursuline influence and presence in Northeast Ohio. Our many friends in Florida enjoy Mass and brunch, followed by an update from all three Ursuline Presidents.

Beaumont staff would love to visit other parts of the country and see our Beaumont alumnae and friends. If you’d like to host an event, please let us know!

The Mad Hatter “Goes Continental”The Mad Hatter Goes Continental was the theme for this year’s fundraiser on March 24, and what a great time for all who attended! Nearly 300 people were on hand for the event, enjoying the cocktail reception, the silent auction bidding, a delicious dinner from the InterContinental Hotel and of course, the live auction. Guests strolled along the “boulevard” during the reception as artists sketched and conversation flowed.

Special thanks to Bishop Roger W. Gries, OSB, for conducting a lovely liturgy as the evening started. Thanks also to chairs of the event, current parents Odette Hankins and Mary Alice Haritonovich. A big round of applause goes to all those who supported The Mad Hatter through sponsorship, donations and advertisements.

Congratulations go to the 2012 Beaumont Award recipients Jill V. Akins, AIA ’78 and Margaret Supp Connell. The Beaumont Award recognizes an outstanding individual or group that serves as a source of inspiration, personifying Beaumont School’s core beliefs while incorporating these values into action through leadership, service and philanthropy.

Jill V. Akins is an alumna, class of 1978 and a former Board member. Her daughter, Ashley, is also an alumna, class of 2010. Jill is a Registered Architect and Principal of Van Auken Akins Architects LLC (VAA), celebrating its 20th anniversary this May. The firm has completed several projects at Beaumont School, Ursuline College, The Ohio State University, Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals.

Margaret (Peggy) Connell started as a Social Studies teacher at Beaumont in 1982. Subsequently she worked at Beaumont as Academic Dean, Guidance Department Chair, Director of Curriculum, Assistant Principal, and finally, as the school’s first lay principal from 2002 to 2010. After a very brief

retirement, Peggy returned to Beaumont to work as Guidance Department Chair in 2011. Peggy’s daughters are Beaumont graduates, Colleen ’94 and Katie ’96.

Overall, the Mad Hatter Goes Continental was a smashing success, raising much-needed funds to support the general operating expenses for the school. The Mad Hatter Scholarship Fund – created in 2011, the event’s 20th anniversary – raised $30,000 this year. This elevates the total raised for the Mad Hatter Scholarship Fund to $77,000. The goal is to fully endow the fund at $100,000 in 2013.

Next year’s Mad Hatter will be held Saturday, April 13, 2013. We hope to see you there!

In honor of Black History Month in February, the FAME club (Females Achieving Minority Excellence) invited author, community activist and radio show host Basheer Jones to Beaumont. His topic, The Importance of Women and Progress, held the entire student body rapt for the better part of an hour, as Mr. Jones told the story of moving to

Cleveland as a young child, sometimes living in shelters with his mother, and his challenges to complete his course work at Martin Luther King High School and to graduate from Morehouse College.

More recently, he spoke at appearances by Tavis Smiley and Barack Obama in Cleveland. He held one of the largest youth voter registration efforts in the city’s history in 2008. He is president of his own foundation with programs that encourage young people to work for the community, excel in school and become leaders. “My mother always taught me that the measure of a man is not about how much he gains but how much he gives,” he says in the author’s note of his book.

With a warm smile and down-to-earth presentation, Mr. Jones was very popular with Beaumont students. So much, in fact, the FAME club invited him to return for a poetry reading and book signing in April. Mr. Jones read from his book I’ll Speak for Change and met with dozens of students afterwards.

In May, Beaumont students went on a field trip to see a children’s operetta produced through the cooperation of John Hay High School, CityMusic Cleveland, Cleveland School of the Arts, Facing History and the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage. This was no ordinary operetta. This was Brudibar, a work performed by children living in the Terezienstadt concentration camp located in Czechoslovakia.

Dr. Lisa Litteral, co-chair of the Fine Arts Department ensured students attending the performance understood the history of the work, written by Hans Krasa, a prominent Czech composer who died at Auschwitz. Terezienstadt (Therezin) was the propaganda concentration camp where the Nazis sent famous musicians, artists, writers, intellectuals, and scientists. Of the 140,000 Jews who were held there, fewer than 10% survived; 15,000

children were imprisoned there, but only 125 lived through it.

One of those surviving children, Ela Stein Weissberger, now 81, appeared as the Cat in all 55 performances of Brundibar. She has traveled the world attending hundreds of productions of the work, to pay tribute to her family

and community who died at the hands of the Nazis.

Her travels included a trip to Beaumont, where students who attended the production at John Hay High School had the chance to hear her reminiscences of life in a concentration camp, as well as to ask her questions.

Dr. Litteral’s students also worked on arts projects that reflected the social justice issues of bullying, racial and cultural profiling, genocide and racism, which culminated in a visual and musical art exhibit.

Mrs. Weissberger shared her incredible story with one hundred Beaumont students and staff members who are sure not to forget her experiences, her energy and her dynamic mission to never let the world forget the horrors of the Holocaust.

legacy girlS

Once a year Beaumont “Legacy” girls get together for breakfast, sharing old memories and making new ones. This April, two dozen Beaumont alumnae met with their daughters/nieces/grandaughters who are currently sophomores (Class of 2014).

After a continental breakfast and conversation, the girls of all ages got a tour of the Painter Mansion. The girls also had the chance to browse through the Alumnae Archives, a collection of senior portraits from all the graduating classes, to find their mom, relatives, and mom’s classmates.

The Alumnae Archival Project is now completed, displaying all the seniors from the Class of 1946 to 2011; with the Class of 2012 being added this summer. The archive was formed with the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel McCarthy in honor of Maureen ’79, Colleen ’79, Sheila ’81, Ellen ’85 and Nora ’85. The next time you come to campus, be sure to stop by and look up your class in the Beaumont Archives.

Our rich and long history is one to be extremely proud of. It is through this great history that Beaumont School is able to thrive and grow. Because of our past, Beaumont boosts a legacy of alumnae that reach to the far ends of the country and actually, the far ends of the earth. We hear time and time again about the difference that Beaumont has made in women’s lives – the academics that prepared them for college and more; the need for service – allowing alumnae to engage in service and volunteer opportunities throughout the world; and the deep-seated faith in God that has provided solace to alumnae in their lives at various stages

of need; to celebrate good times and seek understanding during the challenging times. Beaumont has brought together thousands of young women from different cities, cultures and backgrounds to form lifelong friendships that stand the test of time.

Why is this important to the Annual Fund Campaign? Your financial support gives young women of today and tomorrow the opportunity and privilege to have the Beaumont experience. Gifts to the Annual Fund help us provide tuition assistance to students who demonstrate financial need, as well as supporting the general day-to-day operating expenses that keep

Beaumont on the cutting edge of academic excellence.

Visit the Beaumont School website today at www.beaumontschool.org and select Giving to Beaumont on the home page to support the Annual Fund today. For further information, contact Barb DiTurno at 216.325.7327. All donations received by June 30, 2012 will be acknowledged in the Beaumont Annual Report, which will be available in the fall of 2012. Add your name to the list of Beaumont alumnae, current parents, past parents, grandparents and good friends who continue to support Beaumont School.

Donations can also be sent to: Beaumont School, Attention: Development Office, 3301 North Park Boulevard, Cleveland Heights, Ohio 44118. Help us continue the Beaumont tradition of educating women for life, leadership and service with your donations. We are counting on your support!

Beaumont’s Class of 2012 made a visit to the Painter Mansion during their recent senior class retreat. The girls heard a compelling talk from Kayla Cousineau Murphy ’01, who talked about how important giving to the Annual Fund Campaign is to support Beaumont students of the future. Sitting in the Murphy Board Room, which was the Chapel for the Beaumont alumnae from 1942-1964, the 111 members of the Class of 2012 pledged over $7,000 to the Annual Fund. Way to go girls – you make us proud!

Sr. Gretchen Rodenfels, OSU, ’65 hosted the ladies from the classes of 1947, 1952, 1957 and 1962 back to campus to enjoy lunch and conversation with old friends.

About two dozen former Beaumont students attending the event held March 13. They enjoyed a prayer service in the chapel, a little time for photos, and then

luncheon in the theater. After coffee, dessert and much conversation, guests had the opportunity to hear from Gabriela Leskur ’12 who described her experience at Beaumont from starting as a shy freshman to a list of glowing accomplishments as a graduating senior.

Ladies attending the St. Angela Merici lunch also heard from Mary Grimaldi,

College Counselor, who described how well the students are prepared for their next four years, and some of the impressive statistics related to scholarship monies earned by the Class of 2012 and earlier classes as well.

With the St. Angela Merici lunch, Beaumont hopes to weave together its illustrious past with its exciting future.

clASS notes

1956Patty McIntyre Westropp sent the following news. Sheila Dunn Burke’s sister Kay Dunn ’47 recently received the Alice Paulus award from Gesu. She was in town for the presentation at the Country Club. It was a well-deserved tribute to Kay for her generous support of Gesu. Those attending included Suzie Baird Fitzgerald, Dolores McDonnell Ritt, Diane Junglas Richardson, and Barbara Post. While Sheila was in town Gretchen Vandemotter Lauro, Peggi Conway, Suzie Baird Fitzgerald, Janet Neff Newsome, Barbara Post, Marianne Rocco Walton ’57 and I got together for lunch and to catch up. Gretchen Vandemotter Lauro now has 4 great-granddaughters! My granddaughter graduated from Miami University in May. Connie O’Connell Strong just arrived home from spending the winter on Sanibel. She went to Jamaica and Grand Cayman on a cruise in March. She won $50.00 in an Ursuline drawing in April. While on a Caribbean cruise in March, I had the good fortune to visit at Sue Giebel McGinness’s lovely beachfront condo on Grand Cayman and lunched with her and her guests, Peggi Conway, Suzie Baird Fitzgerald, and Rita Mooney Parks at a super ocean side restaurant. Hope to hear from you with your news.

Sr. Mary Louise Gude CHC is struggling with ALS in South Bend, IN. Alice Mathews is now housebound in Cleveland Hts. Barb Neff Hutchinson passed away on January 22, 2012 in Marquette, MI. Anne Pavlish Dini flies in from San Francisco every year to attend the Cleveland International Film Festival, and Pat Lynch Richards and Judy Patterson Nieser spent time with her in March. Here’s to a joyous Reunion Weekend and sharing memories, pictures and hugs.

1962Chris Collura Embrescia sent the following updates. And the beat goes on....Mary Blanche Sawhill Kendel reports that her granddaughter, Annaliese Kendel Hribar will be a freshman at Beaumont for the 2012/13 school year. Love these Legacy kids! Marcia Beljan Catalano told us that she welcomed her new grandson, Marshall Gordon Catalano, in Nashville on March 26th, the second child and son for her youngest child, Jay and his wife, Lily. Her oldest grandson, Owen, will be 2 years old in June. In addition, Marcia’s oldest child, Julie, will be married in July. Yikes….Susan Colman Fontana says: “I’ve moved 11 TIMES since ’62, living in Ohio,

Wisconsin, Illinois, California and Texas. My children and I came to TX in ’79; and I’ve been here most of my life working in the gas and oil industry. My husband passed away, so I’m fortunate to have my children, grandchildren and grand-dogs not far away. I am looking forward to 6/16/12.” Well, we have a TV celebrity of sorts, in our midst. Penny Price Ferry is the mother of that darling fellow, Guy Fieri, host of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Penny has appeared on Guy’s show, several times… she also says that she has never attended a reunion; our reunion in June will be her first. This is pretty special for us, as Penny’s family relocated to North Carolina in her senior year. Many of us have kept in touch with Penny, over the years, and we welcome her back with open arms. Judith Sheehan has worked with victims of violent crimes for 18 years and retired in 2006 to join Recovery Resources. There, she established a Partial Hospitalization Program for severely mentally ill individuals. Judith has been retired for a year and is tutoring at Urban Community School and at home. She also volunteers at the Collaborative Initiative to End Human Trafficking. She has 12 grandchildren, 9 years old and younger. Ten are boys and the 2nd granddaughter is 6 months old. Judith, you had better bring lots of pictures with you to the Reunion. And from Maureen Byrne Gill, “Believe it or not, I am ‘Commander Maureen’; and, we do simulated trips with middle school students to Mars, at Framingham State University, here in MA, at the Christa McAuliffe Challenger Learning Center. I’ve been doing this for a few years, and it is really a lot of fun. I am sorry that I will miss all of the festivities.” We offer our heartfelt condolences to Penny Szabo Hauser, who lost her husband, Michael, earlier this year. Michael was one 146+ victims of a Listeria breakout from tainted cantaloupe in Colorado, Kansas and Indiana. Penny, our hearts and prayers are with you and your family. Who could believe that the Class of 1962 will be celebrating our 50th Reunion from Beaumont School for Girls? I had a wonderful experience talking to so many classmates who live all over the US, while

updating our class list. Our conversations were as if all of those years had never gone by. We are fun, accomplished and bright women, who excelled in whatever we chose to do. We have lost too many of our classmates, twelve to be exact; and, our hearts go out to all of their families. Terry DeFino Mannen and I are having a grand old time planning the Saturday evening part of our Reunion weekend. We extend our invitation to our class to come and to enjoy an evening of camaraderie, laughs and reminiscing. See you on June 16th and 17th.

1963Kathy Gyarmathy Elmer and her husband Steve spent a month in Scottsdale and had a wonderful time. They saw the Grand Canyon and the Navajo Nation among many interesting experiences. Mary Jo Rini just returned from Bhutan and India in February with a solar powered Buddhist prayer wheel mounted on her dashboard. She is praying for you all as long as the sun shines which isn’t a problem here in SW Florida. Regina Fana is working as an investment consultant for Arbor Court Capital. She has been living in Kiawah Island, SC for the last 6½ years and loves it. She has 5 grandchildren ranging from 2 months to 10 years old with daughter in Shaker and son in Cleveland Heights. Her son Rob is 33 and living in Denver. Her mother will be 94 and is doing well. Carole Dugan Benz and her husband John will finally become grandparents! Lauren, their oldest, is due Dec 8th. Terressa, daughter number 2, has accepted a tenure-track position as a sociology professor at the University of Idaho. Jake is a salesman with a small family company in Portland that makes specialty hoists and winches. John is fully retired and loves it. Gerry Jarzembowski Hadley went to Florida for 3 months to Sun City Center and met another alumna from an earlier class, who never heard “our Beaumont Song.” So I proudly sang it to her. She told me about an annual Ursuline Brunch they have in Naples and I went and it was truly a very nice event. She would encourage others to go if you are there. She plans to travel to Chicago

and Matthews, NC to visit her daughters. Gerry wants to thank her classmates who have been so supportive to her during this year of grief. Mimi Dowling Nook’s daughters, Katie and Molly competed in The Big Sur International Marathon on April 29th 2012. This race is said to be the “Marathon of all Marathons” They both finished in the top third of their age groups, good results as this was their first time running a Marathon. Her son Chris is an outdoorsman and was recently elected to the board of The National Wildlife Association. Mary Blubaugh Kinley is passionate about her Shaklee business – working with physician, helping many people to prevent chronic illness. She is also a ballroom dancer and travels with friends to dance in New York and the Carolinas. In retirement Carolyn Greulock Graham is busier than ever. She has been to Cancun, Mexico, LA and Arizona twice this year so far. Her husband’s daughter, Candice, passed away in January from cancer, leaving behind her husband and two children, so Carolyn has been helping out. Her oldest granddaughter, Maddy Rose, started high school this year and the next one, Sadie, will be starting high school in September. She says: “If anyone gets down to Sarasota, please give me a call, I would love to get together with you.” DD DeFino Gaul’s daughter Maggie who lives in Charlotte, is expecting their second grandson in late May 2012 so they have made quite a few trips to the south. Kati Callahan Crawford wrote “My sister, Peggy, moved to the Villages, so I have a stop-over when heading back to Ohio. Vince and I are in Naples Oct-June. I agree with Carolyn...if you come south on a visit we are in the phone book–love to do lunch.”

1968Geralyn Campbell reported that Nancy Hensse Ferris is home in Aurora after spending the winter at her Florida condo. It was this time last year her husband suffered a stroke and she was happy to report that he is back to enjoying his retirement. Katie O’Connor Holzheimer writes: “I returned to Beaumont to see the play Dead Man Walking which was very

well done. I was lucky enough to meet and speak to Sr. Helen Prejean who wrote the book and was present on opening night. Her commitment to social justice is evident…She was very inspirational to me and I am quite impressed with Beaumont for putting on this play.” She has now become involved with the Alumnae group and has become the class rep along with Geralyn Campbell. Geralyn is mostly retired from her Nurse Practitioner position at the Cleveland Clinic where she’s worked for 34 years. “I am very happy to have more time to spend on activities that I love. My favorite thing is hanging out with my 3 grandchildren (Maryclare 4, Ella 2, Sean 8 months).” Other news: Karen Eby O’Brien is a Registered Nurse at Cleveland Clinic with a specialty in “ET” nursing which is certification in Stoma and Wound Care. Sue Horrigan is a lawyer in Guam. Sean Schade Blazey is retired from teaching and travels to Europe frequently to see her grandchild, since her son and his European wife have made Germany their home. Martha Male Baker lives the good life in Louisville. She and her husband Tim lived it up at the Kentucky Derby last weekend.

1971Cindy Shepard Busch’s writes her daughter Sara and her husband Jamie had their first child James Garvin Whetzel III, who is her first grandchild. He’ll go by Garv. They live in San Antonio, and of course he is the cutest baby ever!

1974Terri Ianni’s niece Maria Ianni ’12 is the Beaumont School Class of 2012 class valedictorian.

1975Ann Dahlman O’Brien wed Michael Luebbert on April 7, 2012 in Hartwell, Georgia. Wedding guests included her sisters Sally Dahlman Hagan ’79 and Mary Sue Dahlman Lanigan ’74.

eASter egg hunt

For parents and grandparents and friends, Beaumont’s annual Easter Egg Hunt was a great way to come back to campus. Kids had a

chance to have a bit of breakfast, meet the Easter Bunny, work at some crafts, and of course, hunt for eggs in our newly-renovated

Courtyard. A chilly but sunny day, brightly-colored eggs, baskets and spring coats all mingled in the halls, courtyard and foyer for a very

happy hunt. Thanks to the Beaumont Alumnae Association for organizing and sponsoring the event.

Family photo time with the Easter Bunny! Alexis Bovell ’14 (left) and Ebony Williams ’14 hand out goodies to our visitors.

Alex Fath ’13 and Sr. Gretchen pose with the Big Bunny himself.

Eileen Monahan ’14 passes out goodie bags, because at the Easter Egg Hunt, everyone gets a prize and a big smile.

The courtyard was the place to be to collect eggs, photos and memories.
