The mission of Beaufort County Schools is to provide a safe harbor

where all students are successful.

During the June 18 meeting, the Beaufort County Board of Education voted to relax the student dress code for the 2013-2014 school year. Pants can be any color and jeans will be allowed. Pants cannot have holes and cannot sag or be too tight. Belts will not be required. Shirts have not changed. Collars are still required but the shirts do not have to be tucked in. These changes only apply to the student dress code.

A Message from Dr. Don Phipps, Superintendent As we examine our school enrollment numbers, several of our schools are projected to be near or exceeding actual capacity. This creates hardships in these schools where space is limited. One step to help better manage student enrollment is to limit the number of voluntary transfers into the Beaufort County Schools as well as transfers within the Beaufort County Schools. This allows these schools to better serve the students who legally reside in the school’s attendance boundaries.

When a school reaches 90% of actual capacity we will no longer accept transfer requests into that school. We will consider requests if siblings are enrolled in a school as well as other extraordinary circumstances. At this time (June 27), the following schools are closed for transfer requests: WHS, PSJ, JSS, JCT, EE, BES, and CMS. CPS will likely be designated as closed for transfers very soon. Please note that we will consider all transfer requests that have been submitted prior to this announcement. Any requests that are made from this point forward, to a school that is closed for transfers, will be denied. Extenuating circumstances will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

During the meeting, three of the most skilled and talented school bus drivers with Beaufort County Schools were recognized for their accomplishments. Each year the Beaufort County Schools Transportation Department hosts the annual school bus roadeo. This takes drivers from around the county and puts them on a preset driving course, judged by officials from the Department of Motor Vehicles. When the points were tallied, these were the top three drivers in the county. 3rd – John Palmeri from Chocowinity Primary School, 2nd – Derrick Brimmage from P.S. Jones Middle School and 1st place went to a man who has come a long way in a few years when it comes to the roadeo, Antonio Foskey from P.S. Jones Middle School. Both Derrick and Antonio went on to represent our district at the state event. We thank these men and all our school bus drivers for the ever so important job they do for this district.
