NTRODUCTIOYqr've all heard of Lennon and McCartney, the songwrit-

irEl Ql1o, but what about Lennon and Harrisbn - the buitarfrrc? Well, that's what you are going to discover ii fUetrATLff, guitar book.

This book is a special work containing a selection ofBeafles' funes arranged exclusively for the guitar. lt is de-sigred to provide an accurate look into the le-ad and rhythmgl$tr sWles of George Harrison and John Lennon.

fithough the arrangements in this book are written toernbody the essence and style of the guitar works oflsrnon and Harrison, the arrangement is not just a tran-scriqtion of the guitars right off the record. Rather, it usesClof the musicalelements: bass, drums, keyboards ind gui-bs, tlust m the Beatles used them, but all incorporated intomgu'rtarso that you can play the arrangement alone or ina krd.

Page 5: Beatles guitar

The book is divided into three sections:1. Melodic Licks That Signature a Song2. RhVthmic Licks That Signature a Song3. Rhvthmic and Melodic Licks That Signature a Song

sEcTtoN 1This section includes songs that are most characterized by the use of a melodic signature

theme. songs lilKe Dav Tripper, Ticket To Ride, Julia, or Lucv h The skv with Diamonds. This does not mean that vou have only the lead or bass guitar in the song, but rather that their

importance is the driving force behind the tune. The rhythm guitar com-ptiments the bass andlead licks in this case.

sEcTroN 2This section contains songs whose signature is the rhythm guitar. In other words, Lennon,s

rhythm guitar takes prominence over Harrison's guitar ancl Mccartney's bass or keyboards.Again, vou may have some guitar or bass l icks, but thev take a back seat to the rhvthm guitar. This sect ion is also important and unique in that i t af fords a gui tar p laver the chance to learn

how to plav rhythm guitar patterns which incorporate percussive qualit ies that anv goodrhythm gui tar ist should know. Lennon was a br i l l iant rhvthm gui tar ist and Vou' i l oenet i t Ovlearning these tunes as arranged.

sEcTtoN 3This section contains songs whose signature is both melodic and rhvthmic. Let's face it, most

songs bV the Beat les are a meshing together of melodic and rhvthmic elements. Lennon, Harr i -son, and Mccartnev did not operate in separate l itf le compartments known as rhythm, leadand bass guitar, but rather merged their functions together. tn this section we see how most oftheir songs are a f ine balance between rhvthmic and melodic essence. Sometimes it,s Lennon, seffective rhvthm guitar behind the verse and chorus, followed by Harrison btending in a nicesolo and bridge that goes back into the strong rhythmic verse section, or Lennon trading offwith MccartneV's bass or Harrison's smaller l ick sections.

lt 's all put together for you in THE BEATLES: guitar book.

ln addition, please note that the guitar part is written in guitar tablature to accommodatemusic ians who read music, as wel las those who do not.

For those who do not read, Vou can follow the tablature numbers, strums, accents, and pick-ing patterns, which you'l l learn how to use on the instruction page for tablature (see page 5).

For those who read music, Vou can follow all of the above, as.well as the added musical ele-ments that are inctuded in the tablature l ine.

All chord changes are shown by the chord frames above the voice l ine. The voice l ine givesyou the lyrics, melody and which kev the song is in.

Page 6: Beatles guitar

OWTO READTABTATUR1. TABLATURE is made up of 6 lines, representing the 6 strings of the guitar. The top line represents

the first, or highest string on the guitar, while tne oottom line- represents ine sixth, or thelowest string on the guitar. This can be seen in Ex. 1.Ex. 1: ---f--T-

-..4TmrF-T--T-

2.Tne numbers on each l ine indicate which fret, on that part icularstr ing, is to be pressed. Forexample, i f the number 5 is on the 3rd l ine, this means that the sth fret ori tne 3rd str ing is to bepressed. The number 0 means to plav the open string.

rt = Down Pick or Down strum. Ex.2:v = uF PiCk Or up strum.

3. A slash (( l is used to indicate strumming. Stemming and beaming indicate rhythm as inI ordinary music notation.

B - Strum bass, or lower strings fthe2 or 3 lower strings).M - Strum middte str ings (the 3 or 4 middte str ings).-T - Strum treble, or high strings fthe 2 or 3 higher strings).--, '(clotted l ine) - continue previous symbol.
