Maitland Pickers premiership- winning captain of 2011 PJ Ellis has ended his tenure as captain-coach of Central Newcastle. Ellis had agreed to the role with Central for 2012 after agreeing to terms in the lead-up to last season’s grand final victory with the Pickers, but handed in his notice last week. This turn of events begs the question of the former National Rugby League player – where to next? Ellis has yet to decide but the hooker obviously has strong ties back with the Pickers and they are chasing a trifecta of titles this season in the Newcastle Rugby League competition. Back to cricket and a few Eastern Suburbs first graders saw the lighter side of sport on Sunday afternoon. The boys had been routed for 26 by Northern Suburbs a day earlier in their first grade semi-final fixture and following the defeat were at Lorn Park checking out the action between Western Suburbs and Kurri Weston. When Kurri Weston went past the Griffins’ total from 24 hours earlier the boys stood as one and offered a congrat- ulatory round of applause. Also on Eastern Suburbs and Northern Suburbs, in the lead-up to the semi-final encounter the boys were on the same path. With wet weather interrupting out- field training preparations the oppo- nents ran into each other at Hunter Indoor Sports at Thornton on Wednesday afternoon. Some 24 hours later they crossed once more but this time at the most unlikely of venues – the 10-pin bowling alley at Rutherford. Moment That Mattered: The toin coss at both Maitland and District Cricket Association first grade semi- final matches on Saturday. Both skippers who won the toss, Rick Meehan (Kurri Weston) and Tim Prescott (Northern Suburbs), elected to bowl but it only paid dividends for one. Western Suburbs scored 280 against Kurri Weston at Lorn Park after being sent in while Eastern Suburbs were rolled for 26 by Northern Suburbs at Jack Collins Oval. Flynn Johnson has found a sport he absolutely adores in BMX. Since first riding two weeks ago the three-year-old hasn’t been off the bike and on Friday night enjoyed his first official race at Maitland-Tenambit BMX Club. But Johnson is also quite the character. When SE went to interview the youngster on Thursday morning, he was forced to wait while Johnson received an imaginary phone call from a make- believe manager. Johnson is pictured with his mentor Nathanial Rodway. Numbers Game: 100 – the number of runs scored by losing teams, Kurri Weston (74) and Eastern Suburbs (26), in this weekend’s Maitland and District Cricket Association first grade semi-finals. Quote: “He is going to be a massive signing for us,” Maitland Pickers president John Thomas on the club securing the services of Penrith Panthers outside back Ryan Walker for the upcoming season. First half goals from Jamie Subat and the returning Jason Cowburn were enough for the Bears to move into the next round at the expense of their fellow Northern New South Wales State League opponents on Saturday. In warm conditions Weston dominated possession for large parts of the afternoon. The Bears took the lead after just 10 minutes through a low, left-foot strike from Subat after some neat football between Cowburn and Michael Ryan. Just seconds before half-time Cowburn doubled their advan- tage. Good lead-up work down the right again unlocked the Bluebells defence with Subat providing the cross for Cowburn to volley into the bottom left cor- ner. First grade caretaker coach Steve McIntosh said there were many positives to take out of the game. “I thought we controlled the tempo very well,” McIntosh said. “We’ve worked really hard over the last few weeks of pre- season but we haven’t done a lot of ball work or structure or tacti- cal stuff. “But our work ethic has been very good and it’s a credit to the players the way they’ve applied themselves because the attitudes have been fantastic.” Weston’s next pre-season fix- ture is on Saturday against Charlestown City at Lisle Carr Oval, with first grade kicking off at 4pm.
