"Therefore, encourage one another

and build each other up..."

I Thessalonians 5:11

What great words of advice from Scripture: encourage each other! Frankly, I don't know anyone who would turn down some encouragement in these hard days. "Encourage" is such a great word. It means to "give courage" to another by providing support, confidence and/or hope. I can think of folks who have provided that encouragement for me recently: I've received encouraging emails, cards, phone calls, and socially-distanced visits. That encouragement gives me fuel to continue the hard work that I know lies ahead of me. Being encouraged also reminds me to be an encourager myself. It means noticing who needs the extra boost of a kind word, a smile, or a thumbs-up. So, Bethany Parents, here's my word of encouragement to you: You are doing a GREAT job! I notice the hard work you're doing to care for, protect, guide and raise some amazing kids in these extraordinary days. Keep it up!

We’re looking forward to seeing you.

The FISHin’ Hole Opportunities to Serve

HELP! HELP!

We can always use parent help to make our school the best it can be. Check with your child’s teacher to see how you can pitch in.

“And whatever you do, whether in

word or deed, do it all in the name of

the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the

Father through Him.” Col 3:17

Typically we take a weekly

offering during our chapel services that is used to support a charity. These offerings teach our students the importance of using our financial blessings to make a difference in the lives of others. During our learning-from-home time, we are encouraging each student to create their own chapel “bank” to collect their offerings for the month of September. When we are back together at school,

we’ll combine our offerings. For September we will be donating to Christian Outreach in Action in downtown Long Beach. This amazing ministry feeds hundreds and hundreds of local residents every week.

One lesson we try and teach our kiddos is to “not judge a book by its cover”. Boy, does this school year come with a doozy of a cover story – it didn’t get rave reviews from last year and many of us don’t think it has the capability to be anything but a headache this year and want to give it a bad review before we even start.

But… just like I would tell my kids to give something a chance, I need to take my own advice and do the same. I need to give this year the opportunity to be a teacher of new lessons, a guide for experiences I haven’t thought about yet, to push and stretch my boundaries and do more than I thought I could, and a leader in accepting challenges head on. I love this picture. It reminds me to change my mindset about starting the year. And to give this year the opportunity to surprise us in big, beautiful ways. He is in charge. He’s got this. And we need to let Him guide us in these uncharted territories. Great things are ahead. Welcome to a new school year, BearFam! We’re so glad you’re on the journey with us!

PTL Communications

Middle School Corner

This week we’ll kickoff Advisory teams! The middle school students are assigned to five multi-grade level advisory teams led by Mr. Morner, Ms. Einspahr, Mrs. Evans, Mrs. Moorman and Mr. Brege.

Advisory time is spent in academic, spiritual and growth-mindset learning. We also participate in a variety of fun, team-based activities (we’re planning for some during learning from home!)

Week 1 focuses on getting to know each other and the important job of choosing a team name!

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up,

just as in fact you are doing.”

I Thessalonians 5:11

Waiver Update

LA County is taking a “cautious and measured approach” and is not considering waivers at this time. We will continue to monitor communication and keep you apprised. In the meantime, we’re picking up the first of our shipments of desk shields and our shipment of student/staff PPE this week in preparation for students to return.

HOSTS & GUESTS

When thousands were put into quarantine in Italy, it didn’t stop them from connecting. Instead,

they played music together. Have your family grab instruments (real or

make-shift) and make music together. Record and post it with the hashtag

#HabitudesHomeChatsfor a chance to be featured on the

Growing Leaders Instagram@growingleaders

Connections can be hard to come by, even when you aren’t quarantined by Coronavirus. That’s why it’s amazing when you see people in isolation still

finding ways to connect. People around the world are exercising together from their balconies, playing music together and utilizing video chatting technology to create together and solve problems.

All this is only possible when people focus on being hosts, not guests, to

those within their influence.

No where is this a bigger challenge than in our own families. Sometimes

the people you know the best are the ones who you tend to make the least effort toward. May that not be true of our families during this time. The Coronavirus should be a reason to

come together, and it’s time we started taking initiative with those we love the most. So, what could you do to care or

connect with others this week?

STAYING CONNECTEDHave you ever been a guest at a party? Then you know that guests don’t have a lot of responsibilities. They might have a few conversations, or run into a friend they know, but for the most part they can just sit back and enjoy the party. Hosts are a different story. A host is responsible for planning, getting food, setting up the venue and even welcoming and introducing guests to others. Hosts take the initiative in relationships. They are intentional about them. You must do this too. You must see yourself as a host,

not a guest, in your daily life and go out of your way to connect with others and provide for them.

1. Think of a few people in your life who are good hosts. What makes them good hosts?

2. Why is it important to make others feel comfortable?

3. How would relationships change if everyone took more initiative?

Hello Bethany Bears!

My name is Brianna Ojeda. I am your new School Counselor here at Bethany Lutheran. I am very excited to be working alongside these incredible teachers and faculty members. I am also very excited to lend a helping hand if any students need support, either academically, socially, or just need someone to talk to, as we begin this new year.

I graduated from Concordia University in Irvine in 2018, receiving my degree in Bachelors of Arts in Behavioral Science with a double emphasis in both Psychology and Sociology, as well as a minor in Spanish. After completing my Undergraduate studies in three years, I worked within LBUSD as a Behavioral Technician in the S.U.C.E.S.S. classrooms.

Currently, I am gaining my Master’s Degree in Marital and Family Therapy at California State University, Dominguez Hills. Applying what I’ve learned from Professors and digesting the texts of the academia, I feel more than prepared to extend my services to the students and families within Bethany!

I am eager to build new relationships within the Bethany Family and look forward to guiding all students to find their place in an effort to be themselves and feel comfortable with who they are as individuals.

Thank you,

Brianna Ojeda
