THE 42"*^ ANNUAL REPORT OF TIffi BEAN IMPROPREMENT COOPERATIV^E

The Bean Improvement Cooperative would like to invite its members and other interested parties join us at the 1999 Biennial Meeting in Calgary Alberta from November 8-13. In addition, there are associated meetings with our colleagues in pea improvement, Crop Germplasm Committees and the Regional W-150 Committee before and after the BIC/NDBC sessions. Our local hosts include H. Henning Muendel (Research Centre, Lethbridge, Alberta) and Bert Vandenberg (University of Saskatchewan) in addition to their pulse industry colleagues in the Canadian Prairies. Please refer to the information provided by the local organizing committee in this report of the BIC, and look for other information and the call for abstacts that will be mailed directly by the local organizing committee to all BIC members later this year. Please share this information with interested colleagues who would like to attend these meetings and/'or join the BIC

Our organization has always had a strong commitment from its members who have devoted their time and energy to creating a positive atmosphere of cooperation and enthusiasm for those just beginning their exciting careers to those who have come to the end of tibeir productive and rewarding careers with beans. Please review the call for nominations for the BIC Meritorious Service Award and the BIC Achievement Award, and forward your nominations to the Awards Committee Chairperson, Dermot P. Coyne by July 1, 1999.

I have taken this opportunity to update the list of BIC Committee Membership, and those who have received BIC Awards tiiroughout the history of the Bean Improvement Cooperative. In addition, we have a Genetics Committee, which of late has received leadership from individuals such as Jim Myers and Mark Bassett and their report and recommendations are published in this issue.

B I C AWARDS-NOMINATION REQUEST March 15, 1999

The Bean Improvement Cooperative has proudly acknowledged outstanding contributions made by many of its members to bean research and education. The Meritorious Service Award has been presented to over 50 of our colleagues during the 42 year history of the BIC. These recipients have devoted many years of their illustrious careers to bean research and education, and have consistently provided outstanding service to our organization.

The BIC Coordinating Committee and Awards Committee recently created a special award for BIC members who have devoted less time to their "bean careers" than our Meritorious Service Award recipients. The BIC Achievement Award acknowledges a scientist with fewer than 15 years of post-graduate service who has demonstrated outstanding contributions to bean research and/or education.

These awards will be presented at the next BIC Biennial Meeting to deserving candidates nominated by their peers and selected by the BIC Awards Committee. Award recipients will be acknowledged at the BIC Biennial Meeting in Calgary, Alberta during November 6 -13, 1999. Please help us select worthy recipients.

Coordination of Genes and Gene Symbol Nomenclature - BIC Genetics Committee

The Genetics Committee is a sub committee of the Bean Improvement Cooperative that organizes and coordinates activities that deal with Phaseolus genetics. The committee has served as a clearinghouse for the assigimient and use of gene symbols. The committee also maintains the Guidelines for Gene Nomenclature (last published in the Annual Report of the Bean Improvement Cooperative in 1988, 31:16-19. Researchers contemplating pubhcation of genetic analysis data should read the guidelines. Recently, the committee was assigned tiie task of evaluating genetic stocks for inclusion in the Plant Introduction Collection (see Ann. Rep. Bean Impr. Coop. 38:iv-v for those guidelines).

Page 12: BEAN IMPROVEMENT - USDA

We strongly recommend that any researcher conducting studies of potentially new, qualitatively inherited genes of common bean submit their manuscript to the committee prior to publication (submission can be concurrent to the genetics committee and to ajournai). The committee will evaluate the data to determine if sufficient evidence exists to establish inheritance and potential allelism of the trait, and to make sure that the proposed gene symbol has not previously been assigned. Minimum data required for proposmg a new gene includes a hypothesis generation followed by a confirmation generation. Populations in each generation should be represented by crosses to more than one parent, and should be of sufficient size to distinguish among segregation hypotheses.

Questions or comments should be addressed to the new chair of the committee: Dr. Mark Bassett, Deparment of Vegetable Crops, University of Florida, Gainsville, FL, USA; ph: 352-392-1928 ext. 326; fax: 352-392-5653 email: [email protected].

Report of the BIC Genetic Committee ~ Meeting held 5 November 1997, Annapolis, MD

Agenda: Rule change for approval of gene symbols Genetics stocks collection update Committee Membership Election of new chair

A petition to amend the rules on gene nomenclature was presented by Mark Bassett. The rule change that passed unanimously follows:

A tentative gene symbol may be published with the approval of the BIC Genetics Committee when the published rules and requirements have been met except for settling all relevant questions of allelism with related genes under two circumstances:

1) the paper supporting the existence of the new gene is already at practical limits of manuscript length and complexity, and the allelism tests can reasonably be expected to require a full length paper for publication or

2) the allelism tests cannot be performed successfully by classical techniques because the relevant recombinants do not have phenotypes that can be unambiguously distinguished; thus, requiring some molecular genetic approach, for which the appropriate markers are not currently available. The tentative nature of the gene symbol must be stated in the abstract and the tentative status stated to be due to questions of allelism with related genes not being yet resolved.

Rich Hannan reported on genetic stocks collection accumulating in the Plant Introduction collection. He is m the process of developing the genetics stocks as a separate collection. At present, it is flagged as a special use collection.

The procedure for adding material to the genetics stocks collection is: Submit to the chair of the BIC genetics committee documentation, mcluding published data on inheritance and allelism, and photographs if possible that describes the trait. Approximately 200 seeds are needed for propagation and preservation. The chair will send this information to members of the committee for review. Lines with traits that are highly deleterious or that require special efforts to propagate are discouraged. Recombinant inbred populations that are of great significance, and are widely used, may be submitted for preservation. However, the PI collection does not have the space for general preservation of such populations.

Committee membership was revised. Standing members are Mark Bassett, Jim Myers, Phil Mikias, Phil McClean, Norm Weeden, and Rich Hannan (ex officio). Members rotating off are Paul Gepts, Michel Dron, Eduardo Vallejos, and Shree Singh, Jim Beaver was added to the committee. Jim Myers stepped down as chair, and was replaced by Mark Bassett.
