    toddlers

    need

    learn,

    liketalkingandwalking.Andthenthereareotherlittle

    everydaythings,likelearningtouseyourhandstograsp

    arattleorsuckyourthumb,orbeginningtounderstand

    thatthebottlecomesafteradiaperchangeandputting

    onabib,orthattheresadifferencebetweendayand

    night.Everythingisnewandsomethingtobeunder

    stood.

    YouforgethowmuchthereistolearnoratleastI

    haduntilyouwatchsomeonehavingtolearnitallfor

    thefirsttime.Itmakesyouappreciatehowwonderful

    andamazinghumanbeingsare.Itmakesyouseethe

    worldwithneweyes.EverymorningwhenIbringPaul

    downstairs,helooksallaroundlikeitsthemostamazing

    thing.Whichitis,ofcourse,thoughIdontalways

    rememberthateither.

    Youforgethowmuchthereistolearn,Ithink,because

    somuchofwhatbabiesaremasteringweforgotweever

    hadtolearnourselves.Wedothemsoautomatically

    thatwedontthinkaboutit.(Unlesstheybecome

    difficultforsomereason.)Wecanjustmarkthemoffour

    developmentalchecklistandmoveon.

    Thereare,however,thingsinthislifethatweseemto

    havetolearnoverandoveragain.Springhasbeena

    longtimecomingthisyear,itseems,andIknowon

    somelevelthatthingswilleventuallyturngreen.Thatis,

    Iknowthatinmyhead.Itsjustthatitdoesntalways

    feellikespringisgoingtocome.Butitdoes.

    AsIwrite,theholidaysofEasterandPassoverhavejust

    passed,andIamstillthinkingoftheirstories,thestories

    thattell,inpart,ofterriblethingshappening.Thingsthat

    mayremindusoftheownchallengesinourlives,the

    eventsthathavebroughtourspiritslow,thatmakeour

    heartshurt.Itcanbealltooeasytogetcaughtupin

    whatwentwrong,whatcontinuestobewrong,

    overandoveragain,whateverourage,whoeverweare,

    whereverweareonourlifesjourney.

    HerecomestheAnnualMeeting! Asyouremember,

    wechangedthebylawslastyeartohavemoreflexibility

    inthedateoftheAnnualMeetingandnotcontinueto

    conflictwithOakParksADayinOurVillage. Wewill

    bevotingonaresolutionfromourPeacegroupforour

    congregationtotakeapublicstandforpeaceandthe

    withdrawaloftroopsfromIraqandAfghanistan.

    Furthermore,wewillapproveourannualbudget,elect

    ournewchurchleadershipandhearsomeupdatesfrom

    someveryactivegroupsthathavebeenworkinghardon

    ourbehalfthisyear. Thisistheofficialtimeoftheyearwhenwemeettogetherasourcongregationalfamilyto

    participateinthebusinessofourchurch. YALLCOME!

    Temple. TheProgramCouncil(consistingofthechairsof

    allchurchcommitteesandtheBoardofTrustees)hadits

    finalmeetingofthischurchyearonApril16,chairedby

    PollyWalwarkandBetsyDavis. Reportsfromcommit

    teesandgroupsdrovetheagenda.Severalaremovingin

    excitingnewdirections. Also,fourofthefolksthat

    attendedtheUUAConferenceofLargeChurchesatthe

    endofMarchsharedsomethoughtstheybroughtback

    withthem:

    2011-2012 Annual Fund Drive Wrap-upThankyoutoeveryonewhomadea

    April.ThankstothemanypeoplefromUnityTemplewho

    joinedusinSpringfield(theyhadfunaskthem!)and

    signedpostcards,andcalled.Attimeofwritingtherewas

    stillplentyofworktodointheIllinoisHouse,soifyou

    haventcalledyourstaterepresentativeaskingthemto

    passSenateBill664,nowisagoodtimetodothat.More

    BringingabillthroughtheGeneralAssemblyhas

    beenanadventureforallofusinHowThingsWork.

    AnotheronearrivedtheothermorninginChicago,when

    anordinanceofferedbyAld.JoeMoorethatwould

    requirethecleanuporshutdownofChicagostwo

    ancientanddirtycoalplantswassupposedtocomeup

    foravoteincommittee.Alargecoalitionoforganizations

    hadbeenworkingonthisordinanceforsometime(Faith

    inPlacehastriedtodoitspartinthat,thoughother

    groupshavedonemuchmore).ByThursday,April21,

    theybelievedtheyhadthe26votesneededtopassthe

    ordinance.Whenthecrowdofsupportersarrivedatthe

    CityCouncilchambersonThursdaymorningtheyfoundit

    fullofMidwestGenerationemployees(mostofwhom

    werefromplantsoutsidethecityonlyabout200

    peopleworkatthecityplants,andonly20percentof

    thosearefromthecommunitieswheretheplantsare

    located).Theemployees,inuniformandhardhats,were

    reportedlyevenblockingthedoorstothechambersand

    reservingemptyseatsforcolleagueswhosomehow

    neveremergedfromtherestroom.Supportershadto

    standoutinthehall.Thetwochairsoftheenvironment

    committee,neitherofwhomsupportstheordinance,

    thenannouncedthattheywouldtabletheissueuntil

    afterthenewadministrationisinplace.

    WelcomingSundayalwaysmakesmecry. Itnever

    fails,assoonasIhearthebeginningof"Come,

    SingaSongwithMe,"Iturntomush.ThoughImanaged

    tomaintainmycomposure,theAprilWelcomingSunday

    wasaparticularlymovingexperienceforme. IknewI

    wouldbeinariskysituation. Thesoundofeveryone

    singing,greetingnewmemberswitharose,andallthe

    happilyhuggingpeoplewouldsurelycausemetobe

    overcomebyemotion.Somehow,Ididnotrequirean

    emergencytissueorneedtobeexcusedataninappro

    priatetime,however,Iwasfeelingeverybitoftheusual

    mushinessthatIalwaysfeelwhenwewelcomenew

    peopleintoourreligiouscommunity.Itwastrulya

    beautifulandmeaningfulmorning.

    Thecelebrationdinnerthatfollowedintheevening

    wasequallywonderful.Everythingworkedoutjust

    perfect.Ofcourse,thingscouldnothaveworkedout

    "justperfect"withoutthetimeandenergyofvolunteers

    inthecongregation.Manythankstothosepeoplewho

    workedhardtomakeWelcomingSundayapleasure:

    LARRYSTUDER

    LarryStuderwassamplingreligionsin1993whenhe

    beganattendingtheBeaconUUChurch. Larrycontinued

    toattendafterBeaconmergedwithUTUUCandhas

    beenamembersince1994. Hehastaughtclassesinthe

    REProgramfor15yearsandconsiderstheexperienceto

    beverysatisfying.Heshadtheratheruniqueexperience

    ofdaughterCarolinebeinginhisclassesK6,anddaugh

    terJuliaK8.HenowservesontheReligiousEducationCommitteeandplanstocontinueteaching.

    LarrylivedinOakParkfor32yearsinahousethathis

    wifeCarolandherestoredseveraltimesoveranumber

    ofyears.In2006Larryandhisfamilymovedintoanew

    houseinElmhurst.Hewassurprisedtofindoutthatnew

    homesrequireprojects,too.

    Larryhasworkedinthecorporateaviationbusiness

    for37yearsandhasheldtechnicalandmanagerialposi

    tionswithlargecorporations.Hisaviationexperiences

    havebeenchallenging,demanding,andrewarding.He

    servedonseveraltechnicalboardsandtheNationalBusi

    nessAviationAssociationTechnicalCommittee.Hevol

    unteerstimeworkingattheElmhurstFoodPantrytwo

    daysaweek.LarryenjoysworkingwithdaughterJulia

    andherteamduringsoftballseason.

    LarryappreciatesbeingnominatedtotheBoardof

    Trustees.Helooksforwardtoworkingwiththeboardin

    servingtheneedsofourcongregation.

    KRISTINAENTNER

    KristinaEntnerbeganattendingUTUUCin1999. She

    wasdrawnintothebuildingbyitsfamousexterior,only

    todiscoverthatwhathappenedinsidewaswhatwas

    trulyextraordinaryandrevolutionary. Shehasbeena

    memberofthecongregationforabout8years. Kristina

    hasbeenamemberoftheGreenSanctuaryCommittee

    forseveralyearsandhaschairedthecommitteesince

    2009. ShehasalsoassistedinherdaughtersREclasses

    throughouttheyearsandworkedonSocialMissionSun

    daysforallAges. KristinaismarriedtoEdMaloneand

    hastwodaughters,HannahandMarlena. Kristinaisthe

    chairoftheWhittierElementarySchoolGreenTeamand

    isactiveintheWestCookProBonoNetwork,agroupof

    attorneyswhosharetheirlegalskillswiththeunder

    served.Shealsoservesonthedevelopmentcommittee

    forFaithinPlace.Priortoherworkathomeandinthe

    community,KristinapracticedlawatJenner&Block.

    Coming

    grounds,theywantedtofindacommonspiritualhome

    inwhichtoraisetheirdaughter,Claire. JoshandJane

    havebeendelightedathowwelcomingthecongregation

    isatUT.Joshpresentlyisservingasamemberofthe

    WorshipCommittee,thePersonnelCommittee,andas

    anUsher.HeisaPartneratSeyfarthShawLLPinChicago,

    specializinginlaborandemploymentlaw. HehasaBA

    andanMAfromtheUniversityofPennsylvaniaandaJD

    fromtheUniversityofMichigan.OriginallyfromtheBos

    tonarea,JoshmovedtoChicagoin1996afterJane(a

    St.Charlesnative)convincedhimthatitwouldbethe

    bestplacetostarttheirlivestogether.Nonetheless,Josh

    maintainsafierceallegiancetoBoston,includingBos

    ton'ssportsteams.HeissomewhathorrifiedthatClaire,

    havingbeentakentoyearlyRedSoxWhiteSoxgames,

    hasbecomeaWhiteSoxfan. ("ButI'mfromChicago,"

    saysClaire,withdevastatinglogic). Joshhopestousehis

    perspectiveasarelativelynewUTmembertolookfor

    waystointegratenewmembersintocongregationallife,

    andtostrengthenoverallmembership.
