Dear Parents, Staff and Community Members, We are now half way through Week 8 which leaves us with less than two and half weeks to the end of this school year. What an action packed two weeks they will be; assemblies, transition activities, graduation ceremonies, excursions and a range of end of year experiences. We look forward to your on-going support as we work with the school community during this extremely busy time of the year. This year’s Presentation Evening will be held on Wednesday the 11th of Dec. From the Principals Desk cont’d Kindy Orientation We welcomed our brand new Kindys to Bletchley on the 4th and 5th of Dec to yet another successful Kindy orientation “A day in the life of a Kindy student”. Thank you to our teaching and non-teaching staff and members of the community who supported the event. It is wonderful to see the future of Bletchley 100 bright and shiny faces over two mornings. Thank you to Woolworths Canning Vale for the donation of fruit for our Kindy Orientation day. STUDENT REPORTS Semester Two reports will be emailed to families on Wednesday 18th December. These reports represent the written formal account of your child/ren’s academic and social/emotional development for 2019. There should be no surprises contained within these reports. I hope that the lines of communication between home and school have been open throughout the year and informative and productive discussion has taken place between teachers and parents/carers, particularly if specific issues have been identified by the school in regards to student learning. CARPARK ISSUES We continue to have ongoing issues after and before school with parents parking in staff parking bays. We do expect parents to manage themselves in a respectful manner in and around the school. Our core business is teaching students not managing parents driving/parking irresponsibly. Please be advised that the City of Gosnells Ranger has been requested to attend during peak times. Behaviour Finally, as we move into the last three weeks of school we are maintaining high expectations of behaviour. Please reinforce this with your children; this includes behaviour while travelling and moving to and from school.
Reading your child’s report by Michael Grose Reports can mean anxious times for children. Will my parents be disappointed or proud? This is the main concern of most children. Could try harder . . . always does her best . . . lacks concentration . . . easily distracted . . . a pleasure to teach . . .
Newsletter 2019
From the Principals Desk cont’d Do these comments, taken from a batch of student reports sound familiar? Student reports bring mixed feelings for parents. Pleasure and pride if they are performing well but considerable angst when children are not progressing as you hoped. Reports can mean anxious times for children too. Will my parents be disappointed or proud? This is the main concern of most children. Kids of all ages take their cues from their parents, so your reaction to their school report can affect the way they see themselves as learners and as people. Before you rip open the sealed envelope containing the report, do a little self-check to see if you are in the right frame of mind:
1. Are your expectations for your son or daughter realistic and in line with their ability?
Expectations are tricky. If they are too high then kids can be turned off learning. Too low and there is nothing to strive for. Pitch your expectations in line with your child’s abilities. A quick check of your child’s last report cards may provide you with a good yardstick.
2. Do you believe that children learn at different rates?
There are slow bloomers, late developers and steady-as-you-go kids in every classroom, so avoid comparing your child to siblings, your friends’ children and even yourself when you were a child. Instead, look for individual progress.
3. Are you willing to safeguard your child’s self-esteem rather than deflate it? Self-confidence is a pre-requisite for learning, so be prepared to be as positive and encouraging as possible. School reports come in different formats. Some are prescriptive while some use grading systems such as A, B, C, etc. with room for teacher comments. Regardless of the format school reports should provide you with an idea of your child’s progress in all subject areas, their attitude and social development. Here are some ideas to consider when you open your child’s report: Focus on strengths. Do you look for strengths or weaknesses first? The challenge is to focus on strengths even if they are not in the traditional 3Rs or core subjects. Take into account your child’s effort and attitude to learning. If the report indicates that effort is below standard, then you have something to work on. If your child is putting in the required effort, then you cannot ask any more than that, regardless of the grading. Broaden your focus away from academic performance to form a picture of your child’s progress as a member of a social setting. How your child gets along with his or her peers will influence his happiness and well-being, as well as give an indicator to his future. The skills of independence and co-operation are highly valued by employers so don’t dismiss these as unimportant.
Newsletter 2019
From the Principals Desk cont’d Take note of student self- assessment. Kids are generally very honest and will give a realistic assessment of their progress. They are generally very perceptive so take note of their opinions. Discuss the report with your son or daughter talking about strengths first before looking at areas that need improvement. Ask for their opinion about how they performed and discuss their concerns. After reports are read and discussed, celebrate your child’s efforts with a special activity or treat. In this way you will recognise progress and remind them that the holidays are just around the corner when they can forget about assessment, tests and reports for a while Kind Regards Bea Bouska

LA 14&17 – Junior Assembly 22nd November 2019 LA 14 and 17 taught us all about lines and angles-angles and lines! They rapped their way through a tantalising lyrical number while teaching us about geometry! Their moves were ‘outta this world’ and they definitely brought attitude! Well done to Miss Desmond, Ms Ziegelaar and the Year Threes for their amazing work!

LA 31 – Senior Assembly 29th November 2019
At our last assembly before Presentation Evening, our year 5 students from LA 31 showed off their persuasive skills. They explained the history of Halloween and Christmas and what made them the same and different. They added while both holidays were great for children they left their poor parents with dental bills, undies and socks! The students danced up a storm and then asked the audience to vote “which holiday is the best”. Christmas was the choice of most! Merry Christmas LA 31, and congratulations to Ms Browne and all the students on their wonderful presentation.

Starkick – All Abilities Football
Starkick is an All Abilities Football team for boys and girls that range in age between 5 and 15. Founded and launched by the Coolbinia Bombers JFC in 2015, the program promotes inclusion, equality and opportunity. This fantastic program will be running as an integral part of our Clubs Auskick Centre from 2020.
Starkick caters for children who by circumstance or choice, are unable to join into the clubs existing Football programs. Children who may need extra support, or time to achieve their goals, are supported by a team of volunteers, coaches and parents.
Starkick aims to cater for all disabilities and runs by a simple mantra – “If you want to play we will find a way”
We are very blessed to be able to have this program as part of our club in 2020. We are very passionate about it and it’s all about “inclusion not exclusion”.
If you or anyone you know, would like to know more information about Starkick. Please do not hesitate in contacting me, Amanda-Jane Savic at [email protected] or on 0412 232 466
