Competing against decidedly younger opponents, the US held its own in the first day’s singles. The score was 6-6. The Cup came down to the final doubles; contests involving Bob Sherman/Ralph Wilson against Franz Kornfeld of Austria/ Egil Torjusen of Norway, and Baumer/Howard Moffett playing Charles Dekeyser of Belgium/ Ernst Weisskopf of Switzerland. Sherman/ Wilson were 6-3, 7-5 winners. Baumer/Moffett “playing over their heads” were 7-5, 6-0 better than their opponents. The other players responsible for the 14-10 victory, the 7 th for the US in 8 outings, included: Earl Beard, John Benn, Jim Carleton, Ken Hayes, Howard Kunz, Bill Lurie, Bob Seymour and Tom Whitlow. Baumer, who will be 92 in December, has been crusading, along with Mulloy, to make the Talbert Cup an official Inter- national Tennis Federation team event with 12 players instead of the usual four representing each country. The ITF, as they so often do, have refused, saying that a 12 man team isn’t possible because “it’s never been done before.” Baumer simply shakes his head, adding, “I sure would like to see it happen before I turn 100!” SCTA SEPTEMBER 2005 news Southern California Tennis Association SENIOR Mark Winters www.scta.usta.com Co-captain Bob Seymour Captain Ed Baumer The US kept the Cup. Because of a scheduling conflict with thisyear’s National Women’s 65, 75 & 85Indoor Championships, the 5th Wilson

Friendship Cup, a US-Europe contest usuallyplayed before the European Senior Champion-ships, was held in Portschach, Austria after theevent.

California was represented by the “H” Team, a group thatincluded Cathy Hall, Liz Harper, Janet Hubbard and PiyachartHussey. (Elaine Mason served as the team captain.) Players whoare 75 and older, and compete in at least one national age groupchampionship, are eligible for selection. Names are placed in abowl, and the 12 that are chosen have all their expenses duringthe tournament covered by Ralph and Mary Wilson. The Wilsonsalso take care of the 12 performers on the Europe team whichhad players from Australia, Austria, Canada, England, Germany,Hungary and Switzerland.

“Poor Liz injured her ankle in an accident at the airport andended up in a soft cast,” said Bill Hussey, Piyachart’s husband.“She was unable to play, but loyally supported the team.”

Hussey continued, “in a meeting with the team before thematches, Mary Wilson emphasized what she and Ralph mean byfriendship: namely, if there is a question about a line call, thescore, or anything else, members of her team were to make thedecision in favor of their opponent. She stressed that courtesywas to be observed at all times. She reminded the ladies thatthey are the hosts with an opportunity of promoting friendshipand understanding through tennis.”

Hussey, a devoted senior competitor (as is his wife who wasa finalist to Mason at the Women’s 80 European Championships),summarized the outcome with the skill of the State Departmentveteran that he is, “the US team lost by 10 matches to 9, whichis as close as you can get to achieving the Wilson's goal –Friendship!”

Mission Hills Country Club, the home of the Campbell'sSenior Championships (a

USTA Category II National eventwhich takes place January 22-29,2006) and the Campbell's NationalMen’s 60 & 90 Hard Cour tChampionships (April 3-9, nextyear), has appointed Eric Allen Director of Tennis and Athletics.Prior to his arrival in the desert, Allen was the Director of Tennisat the River Place Country Club in Austin, Texas. T he Mercedes-BenzCup, presented byCountrywide, at the

Los Angeles TennisCenter – UCLA, was ahuge success. The atten-dance – 82,329 – outdid

last year’s crowd by over 2,100. As always, each day the tournament played host tospecial events, drawing fans from everyfacet of the tennis world.

Many tournaments offer enticementsthat encourage spectators to attend. adidasYouth Day is always immensely successfulfor the MBC, not only because admissionto the day matches is gratis for the young-sters, but each youth who attends themorning on-court activities takes homespecial gifts, such as tee shirts, water bot-tles, or a variety of other prized items.

The MBC has always hosteda myriad of special days thatinclude – Gibson/Baldwin Nightat the Net, Ladies Day, Pavilion’sKid’s Day, USTA AppreciationDay and Senior Day. Fans con-sistently take advantage of theseactivities in a big way.

This year, it seemed as ifevery day was “Kid’s Day”,because the MBC installed aspecial area called the “Kid’sZone”. During the week, morethan 5,000 attendees enjoyed the festivitieswhich featured a 100 foot long inflatableobstacle course and slide; a Gibson GuitarPod; Sportwall; a Fast Serve cage; two minitennis courts; a Sport Court basketballhoop and of course, a putting green.Gina Pelazini, USA Team Tennis for Youth

Coordinator, who staffedthe area along with MelanieBischoff, Community Devel-opment Coordinator, andAli Ordonez, USA LeagueTennis Coordinator, wereexcited about the success ofthe event. Pelazini, said,“whether you wanted toplay tennis or the guitar;there was something foreveryone! I would like tothank Brian Gottfried and all

of the ATP players who made specialappearances, along with all of the sponsors. They helped make the event a success.”

Incentives encourage families, friendsand businesses alike, to make attendanceaffordable and fun for everyone. The massesdon’t come merely to follow the bouncing

ball. They bring neighbors andassociates who want morethan a head wagging work-out. Tennis is the draw, butthere is more to the show. It’samazing what can be foundon and around the courts onthose special days. PavilionsLadies’ Day, for instance, provides a cateredluncheon, massage or manicure, as well as on-court clinics. USTA MembershipAppreciation Day offers refreshments, giftsand prizes for members who attend.

Around the world, many tournamentsoffer attendance incentives. In Halle,Germany, Gerry Weber, (clothing manufac-turer extraordinaire), has provided a venuethat draws throngs of spectators fromaround the world to his grass courtextravaganza rehearsal for Wimbledon. The fun doesn’t just begin when the tennisbegins. It all starts with special days, andevery year they seem to be a little morespecial and a bit more diverse.

Frank Heinkel, (whose tit le isProjektleiter), is in charge of special daysfor the Gerry Weber Open. When asked

for specifics, he offered,“this year, there were fivespecial days; last year therewere three. German PlayerDay, Women’s Day (wherewomen are given presents,as well as incentives toshow up in groups); Family

Day gives a family of four two for oneprices and Kid’s Day is special for childrenEach kid gets their face painted and theycan participate in other activities relating totennis. Fitness Day is a hit for the wholefamily, with practical advice on how to stayfit, raise healthy kids, and of course, bloodpressure tests as well as other complimen-tary health assessments being offered.Tournament attendance is boosted bythese special days.”

GWO offers entertainment geared toits specialty days – kids are rewarded withperformances by popular local musiciansand comics. Rock bands that performMotown tunes are always very popularwith German fans. Grounds passes thatpermit holders to enjoy play on peripheralcourts are also popular because they allow

patrons to enjoy the first class live enter-tainment, as well as the matches.

Heinkel says that other special days arebeing considered for the future, by theGWO which will offer programs of inter-est to retirees. It’s a given that an inter-est in tennis is penultimate to the mar-keting of any tournament. He said thatthe eventual goal of the GWO is to giveindividuals an incentive to attend theirevents. Of course, at any tournament, theattractions are always geared to thosewho have the time and the financialresources to attend the matches.

MBC Tournament Director, BobKramer makes certain that special daysare fun and appealing. There is no betterway to celebrate great tennis than to beinvolved in the entertainment that sur-rounds it. Next year, when tickets arebeing ordered and outings being planned, look for the special activities. There’salways more available for the money, andsomething memorable and out of the ordi-nary is bound to happen.

Take a look at this year’s enjoyment, from both sides of the pond.
