BDPA National Organization

History and Purpose

• Black Data Processing Associates (BDPA) is a not-for-profit professional association founded in 1975 in Philadelphia, PA. Earl Pace and the late David Wimberly founded BDPA in May of 1975. BDPA was formed out of a concern shared by both men that minorities were not adequately represented in the information technology industry.

• The purpose of BDPA is to promote advancement of minorities in technology related fields

• The first BDPA chapter was organized in Philadelphia, PA. The Detroit was the fifth chapter, organized in 1981

• BDPA has grown into a national organization with over 40 chapters throughout the United States.

BDPA Detroit Chapter

OBJECTIVES

• To promote the growth, expertise of minorities in information technology related fields and provide leadership, community support and career advancement for its members.

• To offer profession development and technical career expertise to those interested in information technology opportunities.

• To broaden the knowledge of the IT Professional and the community as a whole, by participating in activities directly related to Information technology as a way of bridging the digital divide.

MEMBERSHIP

• Broad spectrum of Information Technology Professionals from the classroom to the Boardroom

• Membership is welcomed without regard to race, sex, religious beliefs or national origin

• Composed of major corporations representing wide range of career tracks

The Detroit Chapter was chartered February 1981 is currently the 10 th largest

BDPA chapter with 46 members.

BDPA Detroit Chapter Activities

Student Information Technology Education and Scholarship (SITES): Timeframe January - August

• Throughout the year, local chapters conduct SITES training programs for the youth. These programs expose our youth to the concepts of computers usage; give them hands-on expertise to develop applications and opportunity to compete regionally and nationally with other BDPA chapters. Two programs we are supporting:

– High School Computer Competitions (HSCC)

– IT Showcase (leading edge IT research projects)

Communications - Timeframe: Continuous

• Along with monthly program meetings, several communications tools have been created to effectively communicate with other interested parties. They are:

– The BDPA Detroit Chapter web site www.bdpa-detroit.org

– Constant contacts that announces upcoming events and registers participants

– Mailing list to over 600 BDPA chapter event participants including members from National Black MBA Association, National Society of Black Engineers, National Association of Black Accountants , Urban Financial Services Coalition

– Access to BDPA National Communication medias that reaches thousands IT professionals and other National BDPA corporate supporters and sponsors across United States

BDPA SITES / HSCC Open House – Timeframe:

January

• Sponsored by the BDPA Detroit Chapter corporate

sponsor Compuware, at this event, we enroll new

and returning students into the HSCC training

program which is related to participation in the BDPA

National Computer Competition and other

educational programs at the National conference.

This year we have 10 students enrolled from

University Prep Science and Math and Chandler

Park Academy.

BDPA National Technology Conference

• The BDPA national conference held in August is an annual forum dedicated to joining IT

Professionals with the latest technology advances, and career and professional

development opportunities. The mission is to provide access to the most innovative

concepts in emerging technologies, theories, research and education.

• Full registration to this event includes two day career fair with fortune 500 employers,

access to leading edge workshops and seminars, plenary sessions, opening ceremony

and awards gala, conference guide, conference proceedings and a souvenir conference

bag.

• Corporations, IT professionals and subject matter experts can participate at the conference in various levels of sponsorship and as keynote speakers, panel participants

and workshop presenters.

The BDPA Detroit Chapter CAC was re-established in January 2012 and is comprised of

corporate representatives who have joined in support and sponsorship of BDPA Detroit

Chapter programs and activities. The CAC functions as an advisory board to the Detroit

Chapter Board of Directors. Members of the CAC determine membership in the CAC

and provide advice and counsel to the President and officers of BDPA, The CAC meets

as bi annually to advise and support strategic direction of the Detroit chapter.

OBJECTIVES

• Assist with the development of strategies that promoted longevity for the Detroit chapter in

meeting it’s fundamental goals and objectives as set by the national organization and the Detroit chapter leadership.

• Serve as a sounding board for ideas and programs

• Provide business leadership to enables the organization to function effectively

MEMBERSHIP

• The CAC is comprised of senior management from corporations who have expressed interest

in BDPA Detroit’s purpose, objectives and activities. Membership is by invitation of the Corporate Advisory Council.
