WELCOME

Chronic conditions are the leading cause of illness, disability and death in Australia.

Chronic conditions have complex and multiple causes. They’re generally long-term and persistent, and often lead to a gradual deterioration of health and loss of independence.

Many chronic conditions occur across the life cycle, although they become more prevalent with older age and can compromise quality of life and create limitations and disability. Chronic conditions accounted for approximately 85 per cent of the total burden of disease in Australia in 2010.

BDHP’s Chronic Disease Theme involves researchers, senior clinicians, educators, administrators and consumers collaborating on activities that will improve patient outcomes through translating research uncovered from these partnerships into practice.

The theme has adopted a socio-cultural-political approach to facilitate greater understanding of risk and protective factors, screening and diagnosis methodologies and evidence-based care. The Theme is drawing together organ-specific sub-themes, as well as systematic approaches to informatics, policy, education and research. The Theme aims to create opportunities to link existing and emerging research, via implementation strategies to improve policy, practice and health outcomes across the continuum of care.

THE FORUMThe BDHP Chronic Disease Theme Forum provides an opportunity for researchers and clinicians to hear from Chronic Disease experts and network with a diverse membership group from multiple health and research organisations. We hope that the Forum will encourage development and progression of essential collaborations that will enhance knowledge generation and translation within the area of Chronic Disease.

We want to invite researchers, health professionals and educators to join us for the BDHP Chronic Disease Theme Forum on Friday 15 June 2018.

The Forum is built around three key knowledge areas – Integration, Multimorbidity and Data – and we are confident our speakers will provide unique perspectives on these cross-cutting areas of our work.

We look forward to seeing you in June.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Professor John Lynch

John Lynch is Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Adelaide, South Australia.

Professor Lynch is a Visiting Professor of Epidemiology at the Bristol Medical School: Population Health Sciences at the University of Bristol in the UK. He spent 20 years working in North America and before returning to Australia in 2009 he held professorial positions at the University of Michigan, USA, and McGill University, Canada. He is an internationally recognised scholar in epidemiology and public health. In 2005 he was awarded a Canada Research Chair in Population Health. In 2007 his work in social epidemiology and public health was recognised with an Honorary Doctoral Degree in Medical Science from the University of Copenhagen. In 2009 he was awarded a prestigious NHMRC Australia Fellowship. In 2015 he was elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences. Professor Lynch leads an NHMRC-funded Centre for Research Excellence (2015-2020) called “EMPOWER: Health systems, disadvantage and child well-being”. He also serves on several international, national and local scientific advisory groups and from 2005 to 2016 was an editor of the International Journal of Epidemiology.

Professor Keith McNeil

Keith McNeil is the Assistant Deputy Director-General and Chief Clinical Information Officer for Queensland Health

Professor McNeil plays a key role in the clinical leadership of the statewide e-Health program in Queensland. He works closely with key stakeholders to maximise the clinical and patient safety benefits associated with technology in the healthcare setting, while minimising risk.

Professor McNeil has previously worked within Queensland Health as the Head of Transplant Services at The Prince Charles Hospital, Chief Executive Officer at Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, and Chief Executive Metro North Hospital and Health Service.

More recently, Professor McNeil was Chief Clinical Information Officer for Health and Care within the National Health Service (NHS) in the United Kingdom. This followed roles as Chief Executive Officer at Addenbooke’s Hospital and Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Professor Geoff Mitchell

Geoff Mitchell is Professor of General Practice and Palliative Care at the University of Queensland.

He is a practicing GP whose main interests are in palliative care research, care of chronic and complex medical problems in primary care, and integrating primary care and specialist care.

Most of Professor Mitchell’s impact is in influencing the conduct of palliative care in the community. With an ageing population, this is an important area of research, ensuring that appropriate skills are held by all community based practitioners, and that high quality coordination between specialists and generalists is available to those who need it.

Professor Mitchell has published widely and is chief investigator on several grants around palliative care and chronic disease management in primary care as well as the conduct of community-based clinical trials.

Professor Elizabeth Powell

Elizabeth Powell is a Hepatologist and Senior Staff Specialist in the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Princess Alexandra Hospital.

At the University of Queensland she is Professor, School of Medicine and Director of the network Centre for Liver Disease Research.

Professor Powell is a Research Fellow with the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and a recent past member of the Executive of the Australian Liver Association. Professor Powell has a very productive research group, bridging clinical research and basic science.

Over the last five years Professor Powell has led research of emerging paradigms in hepatology research, in particular examining the role of injury-stratifying biomarkers, and developing strategies to improve liver disease assessment by primary care clinicians and non-hepatology specialists.
