Consumer Protection BC regulates some consumer contracts, but not all. The laws that we are responsible for speak mainly to required contents of certain types of contract and potential cancellation rights.

Continuing Service Contracts

(such as fitness contracts)

Continuing Services Contract

In a continuing services contract, you receive services over a period of time, rather than all at once.

These types of contracts are limited to dance lessons, personal training (such as Boot Camp), weight loss, self defense, and travel club memberships.

Did you know? • You must be given a copy of the

contract within 15 days the contract was entered into.

• You have until 10 days after you receive a copy of the contract to cancel for any reason.

• In most cases, you can't be locked into a contract for more than 2 years.

Direct Sales Contracts(aka door to door sales contracts)

A direct sales contract is entered into in person, at a place other than the supplier's permanent place of business.

Did you know? • The contract is not binding if the supplier

does not give you a copy of the contract at the time the contract was entered into.

• You can cancel for any reason within 10 days of receiving the contract.

In a future performance contract, you either do not receive the goods or services immediately, or you don’t pay in full upfront.

Distance Sales Contracts

Distance sales contracts are entered into over the phone or internet. You do not have the opportunity to inspect the goods before purchasing.

• The supplier must also provide the delivery arrangement.
