IntroductionBCDH Architects have gained a considerable range of experience over the last 20 years designing a wide variety of different building types including both new and refurbished houses. We have worked successfully with many clients to understand their specific requirements and we have successfully delivered tailored design solutions that have made the most out of their site, budget and brief.

We have selected a small number of domestic projects that have either been completed by, or are currently being worked on by this practice and which we hope will provide you with a taste of the type of service that you can expect from BCDH Architects.

Our PhilosophyArchitecture is a public art and we believe that the quality of our built environment directly influences the quality of our lives. Our philosophy is based on the creation of a total environment satisfying the various aspects of social, economic and aesthetic considerations. We believe that only through close collaboration with our clients can each project’s needs be fully understood and creatively interpreted. Our design solutions draw their inspiration from what is special and unique about each project, the interests of the client, the setting and the quality of construction. Our projects are distinctive, cost-effective, well-engineered, sustainable and have won national and international awards for quality.

The internal layout of the building is designed to meet the modern living standards of a small family. The open plan layout can be divided by a series of screens. The terraces draw light into the plan maximising the potential for passive solar gain, break down the mass of the building and help link the building, garden and rivers. The proposed materials are to be sympathetic with the surroundings with timber cladding employed. The proposed structure does not encroach any further on the bank of the river Thames and would be well screened from view by the existing retained trees.

New House, Blackrock, County LouthThis house was our second commission for a one-off house within a proposed development of 25 houses. The proposed site was a corner site with a south-west facing rear garden. The brief was for a cutting edge contemporary house with open plan living but with enough flexibility to allow for a young growing family. The main living spaces are grouped together at the ground floor in a very transparent living space overlooking the landscaped garden, with the bedrooms in the more solid and private first floor.

New House at RathmichaelSituated on a sloping site, the design of this family house draws firmly on the existing farmhouses found in the locality. In plan the house adopts the 18th century format of a two room cottage, kitchen living room and parlour. The front façade presents the house as effectively a single storey structure through the omission of any windows at the ground floor sleeping level while the balustraded floor to ceiling openings express the ‘piano nobile’ at the upper level. Finely crafted joinery is used throughout to creating a warm feel to the interior which contrasts with the clean white lines of the exterior form.

The sloping nature of this constricted coastal site has been manipulated to create a contemporary 4 bedroom split level dwelling. The main living area in the house is situated at beach level and uses clerestory windows above head height to avail of the south facing sunlight. The roof takes the form of a cranked plane, as if wrapping up from the landscape itself, lifting in places to light the accommodation below. This devise ensures it is not possible to overlook the adjoining Victorian dwellings but crucially allows secondary light deep into the plan. The massing of the house and the careful selection of traditional materials ensures that the house is firmly rooted to the landscape and its surroundings.

New House, Blackrock, County LouthThe brief for this one-off house was to provide a 5 bedroom contemporary dwelling with a view to maximising privacy and sun light. The proposed site was a long narrow plot within a proposed development of 25 houses. The orientation of the site was east west, with the front of the house facing west. The particular problem faced by this difficult site was how to avail of the sunlight with out compromising on privacy.

The brief for this house refurbishment and extension was to upgrade and completely modernise this large sprawling 60s red brick bungalow with a view to open plan living for a young family. The existing house was a labyrinth of smaller rooms some interconnecting off corridors and others being accessed from inner rooms

House Refurbishment and Extension, Dublin 4The brief for this project was to refurbish and extend the existing Georgian house which is a protected structure and sits alongside the boundary to Fitzwilliam Tennis Courts. The client required that the house would retain its original character and in particular the elegantly proportioned first floor living room, while also availing of all the benifits of modern technology. The exisitng layout changed dramatically, by removing deep structural walls in the creation of a generous open plan ground floor, which coupled with the decision to create a double height space over the ground floor living space gave the house its wow factor. The infill of a small terrace at the second floor to create a new bathroom provides one of the few suggestions from the outside of the modern intervention.

The brief for this project was to design a contemporay version of the traditional Irish cottage in the beautiful setting of Baltray, Co. Louth. The site was occupied by a single cottage with a sizable piece of land attached and our client used the opportunity to increase the density and value of the property. The cottages were designed to integrate well into the existing fabric of development in the village without being a case of over development and in a style that was not a pastiche of the vernacular as had been the case of other recent developments within the area..

New studio to rear of garden, Rathgar, Dublin 8Typical of the area, the long rear garden to this georgian house provided the opportunity to provide additional space which would benefit from the access laneway beyond. Utilising stone, timber, zinc and the generous glazed sliding doors the space provided flexible working space for the client which is capable of spilling out onto the external south facing decked area during the summer months..

Planning permission was recent;y granted for 3 single storey dwellings on this mews site in Clontarf. The client requested that a further planning application be lodged to modify the existing permission to 2 storey dwellings within the same height and footprint as the previous permission. As a result the design emerged with a ground floor level 900mm below garden level thus allowing a two-storey house within the height of the previously granted permission. The ground floor open plan kitchen, dining and living area is the focus of the house and is completely glazed with frameless glass overlooking the south west facing garden area. The first floor is designed as a cantilevered brick box with carefully controlled views to prevent any overlooking of adjoining gardens.

Currently occupied by a garage, the small size of the site meant that in order to achieve a quality dwelling that complies with all the relevant standards would require a creative and innovative design approach. In order to achieve this on a site where the width is less than 4 metres meant turning the traditional house plan by 90 degrees and creating a central southwest facing courtyard. This internal courtyard allows daylight and sunlight to penetrate deep into the plan, flooding both the sitting room and kitchen. The courtyard will be the main focus for the sitting room and kitchen at the centre of the house and will be a beautiful space planted with bamboo and grasses.

The proposal is for the development of a brown field site behind West Street in Drogheda. This back land development stitches together a composition of sites varying in size and depth into a coherent series of spaces forming a new building intervention. The scheme successfully integrates the historic fabric and invigorates its context by re establishing historical routes and creating new links and courtyards within the town’s historic core. By exploiting the potential of the section across the site ,as well as the use of roof gardens and tall roof lights , the new development allows natural daylight to penetrate deep into the site producing a sequence of calming spaces and courtyard buildings.
