In terms of scheduling Club Sport activities, the Recreation Complex faces the same challenges with lack of space as with Intramurals. 604 students participate in eighteen of our Club Sports, many of whom make use of Varsity and Recreation on-campus facilities. Both practice and competition times are extremely limited on Varsity sites for the following Club Sports: Men’s Club Lacrosse, Women’s Field Hockey, Men’s Soccer, Women’s Soccer, Men’s Rugby and Women’s Rugby. The Recreation Complex provides practice space for Club Men’s and Women’s Club Karate and Men’s Club Volleyball and cross-training practice for Men’s and Women’s Club Rugby in the Spring. However, by accommodating Club activities at the Recreation Complex during peak hours, we make Plex members, who wish to play recreational tennis and pick-up basketball, quite unhappy. If the clubs would willingly move their practice times to early in the morning or after 10:00pm, then we would be better able to serve those who wish to play recreational basketball and tennis. Ironically, this Fall, that is exactly what we asked the clubs sports to acquiesce on and this in turn, spurred much of the negative reaction from Club Sport participants as publicized in articles in “The Heights”. In short, unless the Plex Club Sports are willing to practice late at night, then the extended hours will not help with space allocation.Looking ahead to next year, the Athletic Department has indicated that the improvements scheduled on the Newton Campus soccer fields in the Summer of 2004, will allow for the use of the fields by the following Club Sports: Men’s Lacrosse, Women’s Field Hockey, Women’s Soccer and Men’s SoccerSee attached spreadsheet for Academic Year 02-03 participation figures.03 -04 Twenty-one Club Sports
