The early afternoon of June 24, 1947, was fineand sunny over the western United States. PilotKenneth Arnold flew slowly over the splendid

Cascade Mountains, heading towards Pendleton,Oregon. He was enjoying the peace and loneli-ness of the air as his small plane buffeted in the

wind.Suddenly his attention was drawn by a glint of

light, followed swiftly by another, then a third.

He looked towards Mount Baker and there saw aformation of nine strange aircraft swishingacross the sky.
