It is an honor to report to you the activities of the Brother’s Brother Foundation during 2009. BBF had its second best year ever for the distribution of donated medical and educational supplies. I would like to thank the members of our dedicated Board of Trustees and our wonderful staff for all the work that they have done to ensure that all donations were put to the most effi cient use possible. BBF earned Charity Navigator’s seventh consecutive 4-star rating for BBF’s ability to effi ciently manage and grow its fi nances. Forbes Magazine, in this year’s Investment Guide, once again noted BBF’s effi ciency with a 100% rating for fundraising effi ciency and charitable commitment. The Better Business Bureau again gave BBF its “Wise Giving Alliance Standards” seal of approval. In 2009, BBF shipped well over 2,482 tons of requested items including many bottles and tubes of pharmaceuticals (antibiotics, hypertensives, anti-fungal ointments, etc.), 3,213,761 new books, 184 hospital beds, 337,449 new pairs of Crocs shoes and other items -- all of which fi lled 275 ocean going containers. BBF also provided medical and humanitarian supplies to nearly 265 volunteer medical mission teams. Donors and recipients know that BBF can deliver necessary materials at low cost. It is a confl uence of effort, effi ciency and caring.

President’s ReportBy Luke Hingson

On January 6, 2010, Jen Roche and Vince Dispenza of Three Rivers Pharmaceuticals visited Brother’s Brother Foundation’s offi ce. They came to discuss continuing our partnership and areas of growth for the future. In the past three years, Three Rivers Pharmaceuticals has generously donated varying pharmaceuticals that have been used in BBF’s medical program. BBF presented the two a plaque expressing BBF’s gratitude for the donations Three Rivers Pharmaceuticals has made over the years.

BBF Books in Philippines In November 2009 after September fl ooding in Manila, Philippines, the Malanday High School, which had been hit the hardest, received much needed aid. The waters had reached the building’s second fl oor and all of the school’s books were destroyed, leaving teachers without the

crucial materials needed to continue their students’ education. In light of this problem, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) asked Educational Development Centers (EDC) to distribute over 50,000 books allotted for the Mindanao region of the Philippines to four high schools and an elementary school via a book fair. The books and other educational materials were donated to EDC by BBF. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton joined 66 teachers and over 2,000 students who selected from the varying science, math and English books at a book fair coordinated by the staff of EDC. “Our book events are terrifi c ways to generate attention and excitement over learning materials,” said Yvette Tan, a materials and technology specialist with EDC, based in the Philippines who led the event. “It’s all about getting the books into the hands of learners and educators and ensuring they are used to their potential,” she added. During the event, Secretary Clinton announced an additional $5.2 million in storm aid pledged to the people of the Philippines by the U.S. government, a wonderful compliment to the 1.8 million books BBF will supply to EDC to be distributed to children and teachers across the Philippines.

Three Rivers Pharmaceuticals Visits BBF

Distribution Center Supervisor Vince Dispenza, Supply Chain Manager Jen Roche and BBF Medical Coordinator Liam Carstens

In the third week of November, BBF Medical Coordinator Liam Carstens traveled to Nicaragua with two important tasks. First, he was monitoring and evaluating the work of the American Nicaraguan Foundation (ANF), an excellent and longstanding partner of BBF. He also took two representatives of Teva Pharmaceuticals, BBF’s largest donor in terms of both volume and value, to see some examples of the work being done by BBF partners with donations from Teva. While in Nicaragua, the delegation from Teva and BBF visited several clinics as well as a hospital supported directly by BBF’s donations of Teva product. The group also traveled from Managua, the capital, to Léon, an important colonial city that houses many programs and clinics supported by ANF with donations from Brother’s Brother and others. Products donated by Teva were present in every clinic, hospital, and pharmacy visited, a testament to the great work being done by Teva. The group returned reassured that ANF is doing wonderful things with BBF’s donation to over 100 medical clinics and hospitals in Nicaragua. The trip also had a profound effect on the representatives from Teva.

Brother’s Brother Foundation Medical Director Dr. Chip Lambert, who went to Haiti on Monday, January 18th, with BBF’s fi rst shipment of medical supplies, sent an urgent message that surgical instruments for orthopedic operations were desperately needed in Haiti. BBF Trustee, Dr. Graham Johnstone, who

volunteered to help answer phones, also chose orthopedic instruments to be sent at the request of Dr. Lambert. Fifteen trays of surgical instruments were set aside to be sent as quickly as possible. Dr. Jeffrey B Munholland came to BBF to help package the instruments with BBF staff.

Physicians for PeaceWe are most grateful to Brother’s Brother Foundation for the recent donation to Physicians for Peace of medicines, surgical instruments and trays. Physicians for Peace, founded in 1989 is dedicated to the ideal that healthcare in the developing world can best be improved by providing training and education to healthcare professionals in those countries.

Focusing on long-term, sustainable, replicable medical education and training, we send teams of medical volunteers – including physicians, dentists, nurses, physical therapists, physician assistants and other healthcare professionals – to places where their teaching and healing skills are needed most. In October, 2009 alone, teams were deployed to Libya, Eritrea, Nigeria, Philippines and Turkey, where our volunteers provided life-changing surgeries and training in midwifery, offered improved eyesight to those who could not otherwise afford it and brought basic life support skills to areas where that training was sorely needed. The mission of Physicians for Peace would not be achievable without the many volunteers and donors like Brother’s Brother Foundation who continue to support our work. We could not be more appreciative. Thank you for your contribution.Sincerely, Brigadier General Ron Sconyers (USAF, Ret.) President and Chief Executive Offi cer

New Textbooks in the U.S.

Last fall, LIFE for Relief and Development (LIFE) distributed millions of dollars worth of textbooks and educational materials to faith-based and charter schools across the United States. The highlight of this project was the establishment of two libraries at the Toledo Islamic Academy in Toledo, Ohio. One library is housed in TIA’s high school, while the other is in the elementary/middle school building. LIFE stocked the libraries with approximately $250,000 worth of new books that cover a variety of subjects for students from Pre-K thru 12th grade. Included with the shipment of books were a number of art supplies that will help to strengthen the school’s creative learning classes. The books, published by McGraw-Hill, were provided to LIFE by the Pittsburgh-based BBF. Other schools in Wisconsin, Arizona, and New Mexico, including schools on Native American reservations, have received consignments of books and art supplies. For nearly a decade, LIFE and BBF have partnered to deliver educational materials to schools and libraries around the world.
