Winston Churchill once said, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” Here at Big Brothers Big Sisters we know all too well where we would be if it were not for the community service that our AmeriCorps members contribute. Without our AmeriCorps members, Big Brothers Big Sisters would only be able to serve a fraction of the children that we actually reach. The foundation of our organization is built on community service; therefore, we want to ensure that our matches learn the importance of giving back. We encourage all of our matches to participate in at least one community service event a year. Community service has been proven to bring learning beyond a classroom, provide students with a sense of responsibility and pride, and can even lead to scholarships (http://www.onlinecollege.org/, June 27th, 2012)! Join us on Saturday March 29th in an effort to teach your Little the importance of giving back by participating in the Living Lands & Waters Million Trees Project. “Wrapping 100,000 trees takes a lot of work” said Chad Pregracke, founder and President of Living Lands & Waters. Pregracke adds, “It’s a great venue to help the community and educate people on why trees are important.”

Big Sister Ellen and Little Sister Camry attended the Job Readiness Program last month. During the introductions, Camry had something very exciting to share; She had just finished and passed her CNA (Certified Nurse’s Assistant) classes and is fully licensed now! On top of going to high school and maintaining her excellent grades, she was taking CNA classes, going to Clinicals,

and finally completing the big test. Camry and Ellen will now be working towards filling out applications to local hospitals and obtaining a CNA job. There is no doubt in our minds that this will happen for her soon! Camry has worked very hard to accomplish this goal and everyone at BBBS and her Big Sister are very happy for her and proud! Way to go Camry!

MAKING A DIFFERENCE: CHAD PREGRACKE Q & A By Jaymie Schuldt, AmeriCorps volunteer (BBBS Match Coach) To highlight our upcoming Tree Wrapping match activity with Living Lands & Waters (located in East Moline, IL), Chad Pregracke, 2013’s CNN Hero of the Year and founder of LL&W answered a few questions about the importance of community service and volunteerism. When Chad was a teenager he spent most of his time working along the shores of the Mississippi River, as a commercial shell diver. To save money Chad and his brother would camp along the riverbanks. This is when he realized the horrible condition of the river and it was then that he decided he wanted to do something about it. In 1998, he founded Living Lands & Waters, a local river cleanup organization that is now one of the largest of its kind. He has worked with over 70,000 volunteers and collected over 7 million pounds of garbage. Q: Why is volunteering and community service important? “In many cases, if there wasn’t volunteering or community service projects, prob-lems simply would not get solved. We can’t rely on the government to fix everything! We need to be proactive!” Q: How can people become involved in their community? “Find a cause that is dear to you, whatever that cause may be, and get involved with a local organization.” –Many non-profit organizations depend on volunteers to ensure the goals of their programs are met each year. There are many

different volunteer opportunities available right here in the QC. In the process of doing something good, it might just change your life! Regardless, it WILL make a difference.”

Q: Can one person really make a difference? “Yes! Absolutely!”---Modestly put, but Chad saw a problem and sought a solution. He started small, working on the Mississippi River, collecting one piece of garbage at a time. At the age of 17, he began making calls to government agencies to notify them of the problem, assuming someone would take care of it. Year after year

passed by and the problem only worsened. In 1997 Chad decided that if no one else was going to clean up the river, he would. After his first year of cleaning up the river, he collected over 90,000 pounds of garbage. Chad is a perfect example of how one person can truly make a difference. HELLO FROM (STILL SNOWY) DOWNTOWN MACOMB! Since the last issue of Coaches Corner, the Macomb office has been full of energy. We have some great new interns, spectacular new matches, and a ton of good people applying. WE HAVE CREATED A MONSTER! (The good sort of monster, of course.) The program is reinvigorated, and the proof lies not just in the wonderful new

additions we continue to make, but in the overwhelmingly positive reports from our existing matches. In early February, BBBS staff spent time at both Edison and Lincoln, talking to Littles in the program. Good stories, lots of smiles, real love for the Bigs. This is why we do what we do.

Schools: At Lincoln, 3 child interviews were conducted, and 2 NEW MATCHES were made!

And, at Lincoln, we have finally got a photo of Big Sister Jenna and Little Brother Brandon, who were matched back in November! At Edison, one child interview was conducted, and one NEW MATCH was made! Here is Big Brother Eric and Little Brother Tavahreon:

At Bushnell-Prairie City Elementary, we have 7 volunteers excited to get started! The school has identified the children for us, and sent applications home. The weather is wreaking havoc on our plans to get the program started (Bushnell’s schools have missed more days than Macomb’s), but we’re on the verge. As soon as those applications come back, BBBS staff will swoop in for interviews. Stay tuned.

BBBS Board: We had our monthly Board meeting on Monday 2 December at City Hall in Macomb.

• BBBS staff gave a status report regarding RTBM volunteers and children, those who are still in the process, and further re-cruiting.

• We continued ironing out the details for our summer fundraiser. Everybody is on board, and it’s going to be a huge success.

• We began preparations for the annual Plant Sale, May 7—11.

Twelve more volunteer interviews were conducted since the last issue! How about the WIU community getting involved!?! Makes us alums feel proud. January was National Mentoring Month, and all over the country Mayors and Governors awarded BBBS with plaques and certificates. We would like to thank the City of Macomb and Mayor Mike Inman for recognizing the contribution that BBBS makes to the community. And HURRAH for Big Sister Kelly and Little Sister Niyesha for being there to accept the honor! Here they are: On Saturday March 1st, Little Sisters Courtney and Marissa and Big Sisters Jenna and Susan joined my wife and I for a night with the Western Illinois Women's Basketball team. The Lady Leathernecks held off a last-second charge to win the game (I think it was the good BBBS mojo that kept WIU hustling). Right after the game, the entire team signed autographs for us! Big Brothers Big Sisters has received another grant from the HAVlife Foundation, and we couldn’t be more thrilled! Thanks to this partnership we have been privileged to work together with Bigs and Littles to discover passions in our Littles and then make it possible for them to pursue them. The check presentation was made at the HAVlife Foundation Martini Shake Off event last month, and we are already putting the funds to use! Little Brother, Silas, is so excited to be a recipient of the grant through HAVlife and BBBS. We were able to purchase his guitar and enroll him in lessons, and we can’t wait to hear him play his first song! Currently, many of our Littles are learning instruments, playing sports, and enrolling in art classes all thanks to this opportunity from HAVlife. If your Little is interested in trying a new activity or improving a current skill in the areas of the arts, music or athletics, we can help! The 2014 Snowbird Classic Softball Tournament was a BIG success this year! 52 teams braved the snow and bitter cold with more than 600 people to play in the 38th Annual Snowbird Classic. Dugout Sports Complex in Davenport, IA is the organizer of the event with all proceeds

going to support one-to-one mentoring at Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Mississippi Valley. This year $8,000 was raised to support BBBS programs. A big thanks to our sponsors and all who played in the tournament!

The best way to summarize FIRST LEGO League is to say that it is a robotics program for 9 to 16 year olds which is designed to get children excited about science and technology. Teams, composed of up to ten children with at least one adult coach, can also be associated with a pre-existing club or organization, homeschooled, or just be a group of friends who wish to do something awesome. BBBS has the opportunity to form Lego Jr. (ages 6-9) and Lego teams (ages 10-16). There will likely be a high interest level from Littles to join these leagues, and this will be a great opportunity for them, but we need your help! We are looking for a Big to lead one of these groups. The teams will meet once a week, 1-2 hours per week, for an 8-week program beginning in August.

It’s never too early to start thinking about being healthy. Everyone knows that physical activity is part of keeping your whole body healthy, along with eating right, not smoking, drinking lots of water and seeing a doctor regularly. But did you know that The President's Council on

Physical Fitness and Sports Activity reports that approximately 25 percent of American children watch at least four hours of television daily, as opposed to exercising. In 2007, the Center for Disease Control found that only 35 percent of high school students reported a significant level of physical activity. And for adults, 60% are not regularly physically active. Yet significant health benefits can be obtained by including a moderate amount of physical activity on most, if not all, days of the week. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend that

children and adolescents aged 6-17 should have 60 minutes or more of physical activity daily, with most of that activity being of moderate or vigorous intensity. Physical activity reduces the risk of premature mortality in general, and of coronary heart disease, hypertension, colon cancer and diabetes in particular. Physical activity also improves mental health and is important for the health of muscles, bones and joints. Throughout the year, UnityPoint Health – Trinity sponsors a variety of charitable organizations that put on walks, runs and other physical activity-related events.
