Dear Members and Friends of The Metropolitan Museum of Art,

When Francisco Pizarro arrived in Peru in 1532, the Inca Empire was the largest in the world, with more than 10 million subjects in an area that stretches from southern Colombia to Chile. Yet it was less than a hundred years old. Centuries before the Incas rose to power, other advanced civilizations had prospered in Peru, building stone temples and palaces that rivaled Machu Picchu in sophistication and beauty. Evidence of these fascinating cultures is on display at the Museo de Arte de Lima, the starting point for a thrilling journey I hope to share with you. Please join me next spring for a weeklong exploration of millennia of Peruvian arts and culture, from 3,000-year-old Chavín artifacts, to astonishing Baroque churches, to contemporary paintings and music. We will spend two days amid the monasteries and museums of Lima, then fly to Cusco, our gateway to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. We will ride a luxury train to mysterious Machu Picchu, the Incas’ summer retreat, then return to Cusco to tour some of its astonishing colonial churches. As a specialist in the art of Spanish America, I look forward to our visit to Lima’s marvelous Museo Pedro de Osma, whose extensive collection of colonial paintings, furniture, silver, and housewares is housed in a gorgeous turn-of-the-century mansion. Just next door is the Museo Mario Testino (MATE), displaying the fashion photographer’s lesser-known images of local Peruvians in traditional garments. Exclusive dinners at private venues and a specially arranged concert of three centuries of Peruvian music will round out our cultural experience. I hope you will join me for this immersion in the multifaceted heritage of Peru. Sincerely,Ronda KaslCurator of Latin American Art, The American WingThe Metropolitan Museum of Art

Trip Highlights— Explore the Museo de Arte de Lima with a curator and restorer, who will enhance our appreciation of some of the thousands of objects on display, from the ancient artifacts of the Moche, Chimú, Nazca, and other pre-Inca cultures to the paintings of Fernando de Szyszlo, the father of Peruvian abstract art

— Spend three nights in Cusco, where we will visit the Convent of Santo Domingo, built atop Koricancha, the Incas’ most sumptuous temple—whose gold was given in vain as ransom by the imprisoned Inca emperor Atahualpa

— Enjoy a specially arranged concert that takes you through three centuries of Peruvian music

— Spend an afternoon and a morning amid the awe-inspiring ruins of Machu Picchu, built without mortar to be more resistant to earthquakes. Experience the genius of the Inca masons, who used simple tools to carve the Sun Temple, Royal Tomb, Sacred Plaza, and the Intihuatana stone

— In the often-overlooked South Sacred Valley, go inside a Baroque church nicknamed the “Sistine Chapel of the Andes” for its elaborately decorated frescoes

Departure Monday, April 20 Fly to Lima, Peru’s cosmopolitan capital, and check in to our hotel.

Lima, Peru Tuesday, April 21Begin the day with an orientation tour of the centuries-old city of Lima, the City of Kings. View important colonial buildings at the Plaza Mayor, whose origin predates that of the Spanish, and marvel at the religious fervor of the conquistadors at the Basilica and Convent of San Francisco and Santo Domingo. Explore the Museo de Arte de Lima with a curator and restorer. This museum has Lima’s largest collection of photography, paintings, pottery, decorations, and artifacts. In addition to pre-Columbian and colonial art, it also contains a large collection of contemporary Peruvian art. This evening, our welcome dinner is at a private venue. B, L, D

LimaWednesday, April 22Visit the Bohemian neighborhood of Barranco, where we will see the Museo Pedro de Osma, a 100-year-old mansion offering colonial Peruvian artworks, gardens, and grounds; and the Museo Mario Testino (MATE), a non-profit institution founded in 2012 by Peruvian fashion photographer Mario Testino. Here we will attend a private concert featuring three centuries of Peruvian music. Later this afternoon, enjoy a lesson in bartending as we learn how to make a Pisco sour, the country’s national drink. Then, savor the fruits of your labors at a cocktail reception, followed by dinner on your own. B, L, R

Cusco / Sacred Valley Thursday, April 23Depart on a flight to Cusco, enjoying majestic aerial views of the dramatic scenery as we soar over the Andes. Upon arrival, continue by coach to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Admire the lush and rugged landscape, Andean towns—including Pisac, with its remarkable sun temple overlooking the village—and green terraces that the Inca cut into hillsides to create flat spaces for farming, which are still used to this day. Later, check into our hotel, and enjoy dinner together. B, L, D

Sacred Valley / Machu Picchu Friday, April 24Wander the Inca fortress of Ollantaytambo, where Manco Inca and his band of rebels defeated Pizarro’s soldiers in one of the few battles lost by the Spanish; the village below the ruins retains its original Inca layout and character. Afterwards, take the luxury Sacred Valley train to Machu Picchu, the “Lost City of the Incas.” This afternoon is our first opportunity to explore Machu Picchu. This royal retreat, untouched by the conquistadors, was unknown to archaeologists until American explorer Hiram Bingham rediscovered it a century ago. Its expertly crafted structures were planned to harmonize with the spectacular landscape. B, L, D

Machu Picchu / Cusco Saturday, April 25 We will have a full morning to explore the site. You may wish to rise early to hike the short distance to the “sun gate,” Inti Punku, to witness the sun rise through the mist over Machu Picchu. Following lunch at the hotel, board the “Vistadome” train to Cusco. B, L, D

CuscoSunday, April 26 Discover this ancient capital of the Incas on a tour that includes the Plaza de Armas and its strikingly ornate cathedral. A special highlight is the Convent of Santo Domingo, built atop legendary Koricancha, the most sumptuous temple in the Inca Empire. Koricancha, which means “Golden Courtyard” in Quechua, was dedicated to the sun god and filled with life-size, solid-gold statues of llamas, shepherds, and other figures. B, L

Cusco Monday, April 27Travel a short distance from Cusco to see the less-visited South Valley, where we will tour the “Sistine Chapel of the Andes,” San Pedro Apóstol. Inside is a dazzling display of colorful murals, a coffered ceiling, and an ornate gold-leaf altar. The Spanish began constructing the Baroque church in the late 16th century as they cemented their conquest over the Inca Empire. This evening, enjoy a private farewell dinner at a colonial house on the grounds of a former Inca palace. B, L, D

Cusco/ Lima / Return Tuesday, April 28Following breakfast, depart for flights home. B
