Dear Members and Friends of The Metropolitan Museum of Art,

The winter season is a magical time to experience Vienna. Bright lights and lanterns adorn her cobblestone streets, her Christmas markets bustle with holiday shoppers, and her illustrious coffee houses offer cozy shelter from the outdoor chill. I invite you to join me next December in this dazzling city on the Danube, where we’ll experience the best of Vienna’s artistic and musical pleasures and toast the New Year in imperial splendor at the lavish Grand Bal, a fairytale evening you will never forget.

We’ll spend six nights at the Hotel Sacher, just a short walk from the Ringstrasse, often called the most beautiful boulevard in the world. We will enter the Imperial Treasury before public hours for a crowd-free look at the Habsburgs’ historic treasures—including a 500-year-old “unicorn horn” (actually a carved narwhal tusk). You’ll have the chance to brush up on your waltzing skills with a private dance lesson before attending the ultra-elegant New Year’s ball at the Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ winter palace. We’ll also watch the legendary Lipizzaner stallions dance polkas and quadrilles from Royal Box seats at the Spanish Riding School, enjoy an intimate recital by a leading local musician, and attend a performance at the impressive Vienna State Opera House. And, of course, we’ll take in the city’s iconic art, from her Jugendstil buildings and Klimt murals, to a morning amid the Old Masters at the Kunsthistorisches Museum.

I hope you’ll join me in Vienna next winter to celebrate the arrival of 2020!

Sincerely, Lisa PilosiSherman Fairchild Conservator in Charge, Department of Objects Conservation The Metropolitan Museum of Art
