    INTRODUCTION

Robustness has been an important issue in control systems design eversince 1769 when James Watt developed his flyball governer. Asuccessfully designed control system should be always able to maintainstability and performance level inspite of uncertainties in systemdynamics and/or in the working environment to a certain degree. A largepart of todays fervor on robust control research is focused on thosetechniques which utilize the Variable Structure Control method and

Sliding Mode Control. As well known, the two methods are closelyrelated but, strangely enough, their respective research areas are quiteseparated.

Sliding mode control is a particular type of Variable structure control. The Variable structure control systems are characterized by a suite offeedback control laws and a decision rule, which may be regarded as acombination of subsystems where each subsystem has a fixed controlstructure and is valid for specified regions of system behavior.Furthermore, the system may be designed to possess new propertiesnot present in any of the composite structures alone. In sliding modecontrol, variable structure control systems are designed to drive and

then constrain the system states to lie in a predefined manifold. Duringsliding mode, the system dynamics is governed by the chosen manifoldwhich results in a well celebrated invariant property towards certainclass of disturbances and model mismatches and thus clearly makesthis methodology an appropriate candidate for robust control.

    BROAD OBJECTIVES

The main objective of this course is to lay a foundation in the theory ofsliding mode control covering a large spectrum of recent research in thisarea including continuous-time, discrete-time, higher order sliding modes, sliding mode observers and differentiator as well as the variousapplications of this powerful design technique. The course will alsointroduce the most innovative ideas in this field which will benefit theresearchers and academicians.
