Finally, Summer is upon us and hopefully, for most of you at least, the rains are a distant memory.. The crowds in the local cities and towns are starting to grow which seems to be a great indica-tion that a healthy population of tourists may soon be gracing our shores. I think I probably speakfor everyone that advertises and reads our media when I say that we are all looking forward to astrong financial boost to local businesses!

Some of you may know that in the last edition of The Baywatch Magazine we printed an article regarding the month’s trial of our new internet based radio station – Radio Baywatch. The purpose of the trialwas to evaluate the response from listeners, presenters and businessesinterested in advertising on the radio. The result was simply overwhel-ming from all of these parties. The listeners gave a resounding thumbs upsaying that they were happy that something now exists for the Englishspeaking community. Taking heed of all this support and advice we are delighted to announce thata sponsor for the entire station has been found and this will allow us to broadcast the station forthe coming twelve months at least. The launch date for the station to start broadcasting permanently will be Sunday 6th June2010 and will be held at Casa Blas (Venta La Sorpresa) in Pago del Humo. The event willbegin at 12:00 and finish around 15:00. For further details and a map to the locationplease see the radio section of www.baywatchonline.org We sincerely hope to see asmany of you there as possible. For now have a wonderful Summer and we look forward to talking to you again in the nextedition. DiabetesSymptoms, Signs and Treatment

Most of the food we eat is turned into glucose, or sugar, for our bodies to use for energy. Thepancreas, an organ that lies near the stomach, makes a hormone called insulin to help glucoseget into the cells of our bodies. When you have diabetes, your body either doesn't make enough insulin or can'tuse its own insulin as well as it should. This causes a break in the blood glu-cose/insulin cycle (see diagram below) and therefore causes sugars to build up inyour blood. This problem can be treated either by external injections of insulin tocompensate for the lack of insulin produced by the pancreas, or simply by con-trolling your diet, eating healthily cutting out sugary foods which helps to maintainyour blood glucose levels so that the build up of sugars does not occur

There are 2 major types of diabetes; Type 1& Type 2 diabetes.Type 2 diabetes is also referred to as diabetes mellitus.Type 1 diabetes (insulin-dependent) requires insulin to treat, istypically developed as a child or young adult, and is a diseasethat destroys pancreatic cells meaning no insulin production ispossible. Symptoms for type 1 diabetes:

Exceptional thirstDry mouth Frequent urination Loss of weight Weakness or fatigue Blurred vision

Type 2 Diabetes (Diabetes Mellitus, non-insulin dependent diabetes )Type 2 diabetes is considerably more common and typically af-fects people over the age of 45, who are also overweight. Thosesuffering from type 2 are unable to produce enough insulin, andsugar builds up in the bloodstream.

How does type 2 diabetes occur?Type 2 diabetes occurs when the pancreas does not produceenough insulin to meet the body's needs or the insulin is notmetabolised effectively. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is characteri-sed by insulin deficiency, a measure of insulin resistance, andhyperglycaemia. Type 2 diabetes varies in severity. Followingpre-diabetes or metabolic disorder diagnosis, type 2 can deve-lop at an early stage. Type 2 is usually treated through diet andexercise, but if it becomes more serious and resistance to in-sulin increases, some type 2 diabetics also have to take oralmedication or use insulin to keep their blood sugar levels stable

Symptoms type 2 diabetes:Blurred vision Leg PainExcessive thirst Frequent urination Dry mouthCuts or sores that take a long time to heal Itching skin or yeast infections

Ideal blood glucose values:*• 4 to 7mmol/l before meals• less than 10mmol/l 90minutes after a meal• around 8mmol/l at bedtime.*Ideal values in the UK

How to check your own bloodglucose levels

You can easily monitor yourblood sugar levels using asimple blood test kit, availablenow from most pharmacies. Yousimply prick your finger or thumband place a droplet of blood ontothe supplied strip of paper, insertthe paper into thesmall machine andwait for thereading.

12Annual Summer Feria

You know summer is here when the ferias come to town!

June and July is feria time in Andalucia and atime we all look forward to, where the girls getdressed up in their fabulous dresses and thereis a wonderful sense of happiness and fun in theair. Almost every town in the region holds itsown feria when the locals come together toenjoy themselve. Wouldn't it be fun to travelaround the region and see them all?

The annual summer feria actually originated in themiddle ages, when it was used at the principlemeans of interchanging local products across theKingdom. People came from all around the area tobuy and sell livestock, fruit and vegetables and localhandicrafts and tools. These days it is purely a socialevent with music and dancing and fair ground rides.

The first feria of the year takes place in Seville inApril (2 weeks after Semana Santa) and they con-tinue all around the region until the last feria, whichis at San Pedro de Alcántara in October.

Usually the feria will last a few days in onearea, with different styles during the daytimeand then at night. The 'daytime feria' usuallytakes place in the streets of the town itself, involving many local residents. The streetsare usually closed to traffic, and manybusinesses close for the week as well.Tables and chairs are set up and the barsserve food and drink in the street with musicplaying on every corner. People of all agessing and dance, and visitors arealwayswelcome. At night, the feria shifts to a morepublic fairground or "recinto ferial", usuallyon the outskirts of the town. There is atraditional amusement park with lots of ridesfor the children and “casetas" (tents) set upby the various clubs, associations andpolitical parties of the town. Some of thesetents provide liveentertainment and all areequipped with a full bar.

The ferias usually start midweek and finishon Sunday night. In the larger towns theystart at midnight on the Sunday night withfireworks. The Monday after the feria is often a local holiday to recover!

Simple Hair Care tips for Summer FromMary´s Mobile Hairdressers

Summer can play havoc with your hair, especiallycoloured or chemically treated hair. However kee-ping your hair in tip top condition during the sum-mer months here in Spain, doesn’t have to be atedious hair care routine. Just a few simple trickscan help you make the best of your hair during thesummer season.• Swimming in a chlorinated pool or the sea:Chlorine is very harsh on hair and can make it lookdull and fizzy. Sea salt has a similar effect and canmake dyed hair even worst because dyes and co-lourants make hair more porous than natural hair.Wet your hair before swimming, it can only soak upso much moisture and apply a good protein richconditioner or a spray on leave in conditioner. Thiswill give it added protection from the chlorine andsalt as well as the sun. It is always best to rinsehair after swimming, but if you are not in a positionto do so, re-apply your leave-in conditioner. Forthose of you with bleached or lighten hair makesure it is well covered with a conditioner and sham-poo with a chlorine-eliminating shampoo, or youcould end up with green hair. Always seek profes-sional advice if this should happen to you. • Use a wide tooth comb and don’t brush wethair. Wet hair becomes elasticated, so be gentlewith it, when placing your hair up, try not to overpull or tighten the hair; this will cause the hair tobreak.• When it comes to shampoo, try sticking to agood moisturising one, and if possible rinse off withluke warm or cool water. Remember you don’t wantany more heat than is necessary added to yourhair.• Remember to drink plenty of water in the sum-mer. It hydrates all parts of the body, which inclu-des your hair[and it’s also very important for yourhealth. Preventing damage to the hair and ca-ring for hair is not difficult. Thinking ahead is thekey factor to good looking hair during the hot sum-mer months. For more advice on Haircare, callMary on 662 490 530

El Corte Ingles – How to apply for your Store Card (EC1)and Interest Free Credit facilities.

You could be forgiven for thinking that you have just walked into a branchof John Lewis or Harrods when you enter any of the El Corte Iñglesstores here in Spain. In the Cadiz locality there is one in San Fernandoat Bahia Sur and another in Cadiz itself. If you have never been, or ha-ven’t been

lately, then it is well worth a visit as the range, quality, and variety of products on offer is superband now you can get some real bargains especially if you buy on interest free credit with eithertheir Store Card or finance packages.

The company are keen to attract British customers to the benefits of their Store Card and it is reallyeasy to apply for one. Here’s how we did it in a few easy steps:

1. Go the Attencion al Cliente section in either of the above stores. In the Cadiz store it is situated on the same level as the underground car park. Just go in through the entrance from the parking area, turn right past the kitchen goods and keep going until you come to the counter on the righthand side.

2. Now I’m afraid that I can’t help you with your Spanish, but you need to tell them that you want to applyfor a Store Card or Shopping Card as they call it. You will need to have your Residents Card orCertificate, a bank statement with your bank and account details on it. The statement will need to showregular receipts from either your work or pension as they will ask if you are salaried, self-employed ora pensioner. Like with any credit application they want to see proof of regular income. In order to makethis process easier I visited my bank first and got a print out off them which detailed the amount anddates of my pension credits, and that seemed to do the trick very nicely.

3. Once they have seen your documentation and are happy with it you will need to fill out the application form. The staff are very helpful and will assist if required. After much photocopying theywill tell you that the card will be ready in about 15 days. Make sure that you give them your postal address as well as your actual address (if different). They will tell you if they will post the card to youor if you can collect it in store. You can also apply for a second card for your partner.

That’s it, if approved they will set your credit limit and you will receive or collect your card when ready. The whole process takes about 30 mins.

Interest Free Finance is different and approval almost instantaneous. Here’s how to apply.

1. Make sure that you have with you the documentation listed in 2 above.2. Choose the item you want to buy on Interest Free Credit and tell the salesperson that’s how you wantto pay. They will direct you to the Attencion Al Cliente counter and will give you the details of theproduct you are buying.3. At the counter give them the product details and tell them you want to buy it on interest freecredit. They will ask to see the bank stuff and help with the application form.4. They should explain that they need to get authorisation from Madrid and suggest that you continue shopping as this only takes about 30mins to get. Either give them your mobile phone number or return to the counter later to see if it’s been approved. If all OK then you can take your purchase or have it delivered.

One final point, we found the whole process fairly straight forward providing you have the right information for them. The staff were friendly and helpful, in fact the whole experience was totally stressfree and for any large purchases interest free credit could be for you.

Football World Cup South Africa 2010

The Fifa Football World Cup is held every four years andthis year the focus is on South Africa who host the 19thofficial World Cup tournement, where teams from all

over the world compete for the trophy. Previous winners included France in 1998, Brazilin 2002 and Italy in 2006. Favourites for this years tournement include Spain, Brazil, Franceand England but as previous tournements have shown, anything can happen from thefirst group stages to the semi´s and the final.

So, What About England....England go into their 13th FIFA World Cup™ as not just Group C's main attraction but asoverwhelming favourites to finish top of the group. Yet they may not have things their own way.The USA have upset England before and they will be hopeful of making progress – the Americanshave a depth of quality and experience that puts them in a different league from the college kidswho travelled to Italia 90 with the Stars 'n' Stripes two decades ago. Slovenia, making theirsecond FIFA World Cup appearance, and Algeria, their third, complete the section – but will bedetermined to do much more than make up the numbers. The appointment of Fabio Capello appears to have brought fresh vigour to the Three Lions' squad, many of whom have a point to prove after lacklustre displays when it mattered most under Sven-Goran Eriksson and Steve McClaren. With the tournament due to take place in the South Africanwinter, conditions which should suit the English players and style, so excuses will be at a premiumshould Wayne Rooney and Co fall short once more.

23

Expectation always surrounds the England Team ahead of major tournements but with thewinning mentality instilled by manager Fabio Capello there is a belief within the squad that2010 could be England´s Year! Good Luck Boys! Baywatch 2010

The 2010 World Cup England 30 man Squad(Current England Squad at time of going to print)

IT’S COMING HOME.....OR IS IT? Lets take a look at their previous form....England qualified comfortably for 2010 world cup in South Africa with the following results.

Home Games Away games England V Andorra 6-0 2-0 England V Croatia 5-1 4- 1England V Belarus 3-0 3-1England V Kazakhstan 5-1 4-0 England V Ukraine 2-1 0 -1

England now play the following teams in Group C of the World Cup 2010: USA on 12th June,Algeria on 18th June and Slovenia on 23rd June. Then Group C qualifiers play Group D qualifiers. IfEngland are top of Group C they would then play the runners up of Group D and if England are secondin Group C then they will play the winners of Group D. I believe the main problems that England have to face are the many injuries incurred by some of theirkey players this season I.E, Wayne Rooney (top goal scorer in qualifying rounds with 9 goals), RioFerdinand, Ashley Cole, Owen Hargreaves, and Joe Cole.Under the leadership of Fabio Cappello, England stands a very good chance of going through to the2nd round of the World cup if they can steer clear of any further injuries they could go some way towardsthe Semi-Finals. In my opinion our most difficult opponents would be Brazil, Germany, Argentina Spain,Italy and France, Unfortunately England have not won the world cup since 1966, and onlyreached the semi- finals in 1970. Let’s hope for some glory in 2010.

For that convivial ‘Irish Craic’ visit Molly Malone’s in El Puerto Santa Maria. It’s a Great British IrishPub and Sports Bar, owned by Scotsman Ian and his Spanish wife Juani and managed by Steve, a Brummie - a chef by trade, so the food is supervised to a very high standard. The food is good and tasty, witha varied menu that exemplifies the local area. IE their hamburgers are renowned; they have to be with theAmerican US Naval base nearby in Rota. It’s all home made, healthy and hearty and freshly cooked, with lotsof fresh vegetables. Wednesdays are great for Fish n Chips and there’s a special curry night on the lastFriday of the month – not to be missed.

Upstairs there’s a garden terrace complete with BBQ and an independent bar to enjoy their extensive rangeof drinks, German beers, wines and spirits. Cider’s on tap and of course, Murphys and Guinness, which islike drinking velvet and after a pint of their finest Newcastle Brown, you’ll wish you weren’t the duty driverand/or organised a taxi home so that you can enjoy a couple more plus their Irish coffee!

As it’s a Sports Bar, the World Cup will be shown of course. All the English and Scottish Premiershipfootball, Ireland and England Internationals, etc - on Sky Sports Digital TV. They also have BBC1 and show6 Nations Rugby, Formula 1, American Football and all other sporting events. If it's on, and you want to seeit, you can see it there. Opening hours: 12 noon until very late (11.30pm last food orders) 7 days a week.Advisable to book during the summer months - 956 480 834. Typical 3 course meal would cost around€20.00. It’s Non Smoking and good for all the family with special children’s menus (approx 7€). And for anevening’s giggle, Molly Malone’s Theme Nights attract crowds and there’s always a great atmosphere. Trya relaxing day out in the lovely picturesque town and surroundings of El Puerto Santa Maria topped off witha great evening at Molly’s.

To get there head towards Jerez on the A4. Come off the A4 at junction 649 and turn left at theroundabout towards Poligo Industrial. Turn right at the end of this road and continue on to the flyoverand follow the dual carriageway to junction 24. Exit at J24 and trun left at the roundabout ontoanother dual carriageway. Turn right at the 2nd roundabout (English college on the right) and continuestraight over 4 roundabouts. After the 4th, you will see Molly Malones in a row of shops and bars onthe left.

This year ChiFRA has tried to focus its efforts on some of the major issues that concern our membership, including; Integration, Age Concern, Electricity, and the “AGB”. Here is a brief update:

Integration & Spanish Classes: The Spanish classes held at the “Centro del Dia de Mayores” werea great success, not only for those of you who have improved your Spanish, but also for some of ourSpanish neighbors who are now starting to notice that we are not all tourists, or indifferent colonist, resigned to living in small English speaking communities; but fellow citizens who take a genuine interest in their language and culture.

Holding the language classes in a social centre frequented by the “Locals” has allowed us to “rubshoulders” and start to break down barriers and misconceptions. For many, this has brought the realization that we (like them) are not all as rich or comfortable as they were lead to believe; survivingon a limited pensions, or working hard to earn a living. We hope to restart our Spanish languageclasses in September. This and other ChiFRA activities, including our participation in the “Battle Of Chiclana” events, are paying back dividends and opening new doors.

One of which is, that for the first time in the 25 years of it's history “Radio Chiclana 101,7FM” are nowbroadcasting in English. ChiFRA are “ON AIR” once a week on Monday afternoons at 5.30pm with arun down on the “Local” and ChiFRA news. This is a free slot, donated to ChiFRA and the ex-pat community by the Chiclana Council and Radio Chiclana. Many thanks to Rocío Oliva (Director) Guillermo Ortiz (Presenter) and Alfonso (Sound) for their help.

Age Concern: ChiFRA has been helping “Age Concern” to facilitate locations and organize events. –After holding several successful meetings at places like the “Casa de la Cultura”, the Church in “NovoSancti Petri” and the “Centro del Dia de Mayores”, it looks like they are finally getting off the ground.Several members have stepped up to the challenge and we will continue to help and support them foras long as it takes! Anyone interested can contact Yvonne Ferrier at [email protected] .

Electricity, and the “AGB”: ChiFRA have been working very hard in the background, trying to negotiate lower prices for those who are inside the plan, supporting things like the 60€ per month method of payment and the restitution of electricity for those households outside of the plan. Most ofthese negotiations are ongoing and information will be posted on our Web page as and when we haveit. We are hoping to report several breakthrough's in the near future.

ChiFRA is a voluntary association and relies on you, the members, to take part in our activities and giveus your ideas. Please keep an eye on our web page at www.chifra.org as it is constantly changing and new articles are regularly added. The ChiFRA Web page is now one of the most read, English speaking, local sites. If you areinterested in sponsoring a link, or know of anyone who may be, please contact us at [email protected]

. Membership is rapidly increasing and compared to 2009, has already trebled in the first four months ofthis year.

We are constantly trying to improve and are looking into ways in which to invite even more people tojoin us. One of which is a complete rethink about our future events and how we can reach out to morepeople, including events that we can share with our fellow “Chiclaneros” and fund raisers for localcharities. If you have some spare time and would be prepared to help out, please contact us.Roger Alan Holmes - President ChiFRA

36Irene Donaldson from Chiclana joins over

10,000 women walking the streets of Edinburgh,Scotland, to raise money for Breast Cancer At midnight on Saturday 19th June thousands of men and women take tothe street of Edinburgh to power walk either a half marathon (13.1 miles)or a full marathon (26.2 miles) wearing coloured costumes and decoratedbras to raise money and awareness for breast cancer sufferers all over the country. Irene Donaldson is taking up the challenge to do her bit for the Cancer charity that helps so manypeople each year. This is what she says: “Having been through cancer treatment quite recently, I havedecided to put something back into the system which gave me so much support by doing theEdinburgh Moonwalk on June 19. I have been training for the event here in Chiclana but there are notenough hills to replicate the hilly streets of Edinburgh. The Edinburgh Moonwalk, involving 10,000women, will be led by TV personality Lorraine Kelly, whose mother and daughter are also taking part.Any donations to this great cause would be greatly appreciated, please see the link belowto my fundraising page and give what you can. Thank You” http://www.walkthewalkfundraising.org/irene_donaldsonThe money raised for the Walk the Walk charity goes towards various projects and campaigns that areinvolved with breast cancer and gives money to where they know it will make the most difference. Theirpolicy is to support research and also to support those that have cancer now with equipment and cash.

Pet Page For Those Who Have Pets...

37

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE PETS, THISIS A TRUE STORY. FOR THOSE THAT DON'T, IT IS A TRUESTORY.The following was found posted very low on aKimba’s volunteer refrigerator door.Dear Dogs and Cats: The dishes with the pawprints are yours and contain your food. The otherdishes are mine and contain my food. Placing apaw print in the middle of my plate and food doesnot stake a claim for it becoming your food anddish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in theslightest.

The stairway was not designed by Formula Oneand is not a racetrack. Racing me to the bottom isnot the object. Tripping me doesn't help becauseI fall faster than you can run.

I cannot buy anything biggerthan a king sized bed. I amvery sorry about this. Donot think I will continuesleeping on the couch toensure your comfort, however. Dogs and cats canactually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It is notnecessary to sleep perpendicular to each other, stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I alsoknow that sticking tails straight out and having ton-gues hanging out on the other end to maximizespace is nothing but sarcasm.

For the last time, there is no secret exit from thebathroom! If, by some miracle, I beat you thereand manage to get the door shut, it is not neces-sary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob orget your paw under the edge in an attempt to openthe door. I must exit through the same door I en-tered. Also, I have been using the bathroom foryears - canine/feline attendance is not required. The proper order for kissing is: Kiss me first, thengo smell the other dog or cat's butt. I cannotstress this enough.

TO ALL NON-PET OWNERS WHO VISIT ANDLIKE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT OUR PETS:

(1) They live here. You don't. (2) If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stayoff the furniture. That's why they call it 'fur'-niture. (3) I like my pets a lot better than I like most peo-ple. (4) To you, they are animals. To me, they areadopted sons/daughters who are short, hairy, walkon all fours and don't speak clearly.

Remember, dogs and cats are better than kids be-cause they: (1) eat less, (2) don't ask for money allthe time, (3) are easier to train, (4) normally come when ca-lled, (5) never ask to drive thecar, (6) don't hang out with drug-using people; (7) don't smoke or drink, (8) don't want to wear your clothes, (9) don't have to buy the latest fashions, (10) don't need millions for school and university (11) if they get pregnant, you can sell theirchildren[

DOG CLUB Marilyin Atkinson from Wag Tails (www.wag-tails-couk) is hoping to start up a Dog Club/Society/Support Group in the Chiclana area. The main purposes for this being; 1 To help those of you who take instray or abandoned dogs with advice (from those of us who have been there) and with practical help, ifneeded. 2 To help people who have lost their dogs, with emotional or practical support. 3 To share informa-tion about what is going on the Doggie World. Either through a newsletter or verbally. 4 Possible monthlywalks 5 Activities to raise money for the local dog charities. If you have any thoughts on this please emailme at [email protected]

SEAN PROPIETARIOS DE MASCOTAS Y QUESE QUEJEN DE NUESTROS ANIMALES:(1) Ellos viven aquí.

Concerned about Fighting Mosquitoes this summer? Here are 5 simple tips thatmight help you....

1) Plant mosquito deterring plants around your yard such as citronella, marigolds, basil, lavender, and catnip.2) Keep spare tires and other items that collect water stored in a sheltered area.

This cuts down on the amount of rain these items can collect. Empty standingwater from buckets, boats, planters, wheelbarrows, etc.3) Wear light coloured clothing. Mosquitoes are attracted to dark clothes.4) It has also been advised to take Vitamin B1 tablets about 30mins before you go outside, and

garlic tablets early evening time. However, this is said to only be affective for 1 in 3 people whotry it.

5) Keep your body covered as much as possible (including wearing a hat), although mosqui-toes can find their way through the fabric–it does cut down on bites

42Just a tap on the shoulder:

A passenger in a taxi leaned over to ask thedriver a question and gently tapped him on theshoulder to get his attention. The driver scre-amed, lost control of the cab, nearly hit a bus, drove upover the kerb and stopped just inches from alarge plate glass window.

For a few moments everything was silent inthe cab. Then, the still shaking driver said,“Are you OK? I'm so sorry, but you scared thedaylights out of me.”

The badly shaken passenger apologised tothe driver and said he didn't realize that amere tap on the shoulder would startle the dri-ver so badly.

The driver replied, 'No,no, I'm the one who issorry – it's entirely myfault. Today is my veryfirst day driving a cab.I've been driving a hearse for the past 25 years.
