Principals Message “One of the most courageous things you can

do is to identify yourself, know who you are,

what you believe in and where you want to go”

Sheila Murray Bethel

This week in the Church calendar we begin the season of Lent

commencing on Ash Wednesday18 February. Lent is a season of

reflection, re-evaluation, repentance and reconciliation. During

Lent we are invited, in this holy season, to renew ourselves, to

remove the obstacles that keep us from seeing our true selves

clearly; so that we may come to understand more powerfully

the Love of God who created us and embraces who we are.

Have you ever thought of Lent as a yearly second chance?

Each year the Church gives us six weeks to take a long, caring

look at our lives to see if our values and priorities are in line with

God’s desires for us. Lent becomes that second chance, or

do-over, to “return to God with our whole heart.”

Sometimes people don’t look forward to Lent. Childhood

memories of giving up lollies or sitting through long church

services may come immediately to mind. Words like “sacrifice,”

“discipline,” and “self-denial” are often used in ways that

suggest that Lent is something to be endured rather than a time

of spiritual growth.

During Lent, the church uses symbols that relate to the themes of

the season; Commencing with the Ashes used on Ash

Wednesday. Ashes symbolise death and grief as well as the

repentance we feel because we have not lived up to being the

person God intends us to be. Out of the ashes of our past we

can be renewed spiritually and journey to a new life of faith and

trust. Light is the universal religious symbol which reminds us that

Jesus is the light who shows us the way and through his sacrifice

we are made whole.

Our supermarket shelves are already full of Hot Cross Buns, Easter

Eggs and an abundance of Fish. How do they symbolise Lent

and the upcoming Easter Season? Hot cross Buns which are

made with yeast, and with icing in the shape of a Cross on top

remind us of Christ’s cross and the yeast in the rolls reminds us of

new life. Easter Eggs became a symbol of the rock tomb out

which Jesus gloriously emerged to new life in the resurrection.

And finally, the fish was a secret sign for Christ’s followers who

were forced to worship in the catacombs in Rome. Now it is a

symbol which stands for the Christian who has been brought to

life in the waters of Baptism.

Lent is a period of hope, renewal and direction setting. My hope

and wish for the Bayview College community is to use this time

courageously.

Lord, Jesus Christ your son gave Himself for our eternal salvation.

It was an act of charity that was unprecedented in scope and

reach. May we when given the opportunity, honor your will and

answer the needs of our fellow man. This we ask in the Savior's

Name. Amen.

Flagship Programs Last week welcomed the first lessons of our Flagship Program which will continue

every Friday for years 7 to 12 except for Year 9 which takes place over a full day

off-campus once a cycle. The flagship program covers key components from the

Australian Curriculum relating to general capabilities and careers. It also relates

directly to our new Vision, and Mission (To Believe, To Think, To Achieve).

This is an exciting new program that provides pastoral time for students to

develop skills and attributes that are the critical in their overall development.

These general capabilities include:

Self-Management

This element involves students effectively regulating, managing and monitoring

their own emotional responses, and persisting in completing tasks and

overcoming obstacles. Students are engaged in developing organisation skills,

and identifying the resources needed to achieve goals. This is achieved through

developing the skills to work independently and to show initiative, learning to be

conscientious, delaying gratification and persevering in the face of setbacks and

frustrations. It also involves the metacognitive skill of learning when and how to

use particular strategies.

Social Awareness

This element involves students recognising others’ feelings and knowing how and

when to assist others. Students learn to show respect for and understand others’

perspectives, emotional states and needs. They learn to participate in positive,

safe and respectful relationships, defining and accepting individual and group

roles and responsibilities. Students will gain an understanding of the role of

advocacy in contemporary society and build their capacity to critique societal

constructs and forms of discrimination, such as racism and sexism.

Social management

This element involves students interacting effectively and respectfully with a range

of adults and peers. Students learn to negotiate and communicate effectively

with others; work in teams, positively contribute to groups and collaboratively

make decisions; resolve conflict and reach positive outcomes. Students will

develop the ability to initiate and mange successful personal relationships, and

participate in a range of social and communal activities. Social management

involves building skills associated with leadership, such as mentoring and role

modelling. We will look at specific activities that are taking place in the Wave,

Anchor, Circle and Horizon programs as the year progresses.

Business ALIVE students visit Portland

Courthouse Our year 9/10 Business Alive class went to the

local Portland Court House and sat in the jury box

to observe three cases. During this excursion we

took into consideration the offence and

allegations that took place. It was a great

experience

Excerpt from Dr K’s speech to the students

“Regardless of what happened last year great things remain possible for each and every one of you. For those of

you who are doing ‘OK’ you need to know that you can do and be and give more than ‘OK’. Your end of year

school report, regardless of the results, has provided for you a very different message to that of the Albert Einsteins or

the Walt Disneys of this world.

It has reminded you that we believe in you, each one of you, that we, your teachers, want the very best for you both

now and way into the future you are creating for yourself”.

“This is the beginning of

a new year and now is

the time to build your

own success story”
