Baxter is 204,733 acres of pristine wilderness. It has no paved roads or modern facilities. The park is a paradise for the naturalist, mountain climber, hiker and photographer. Many orchids, ferns, alpine and other plants grow in abundance. Geologists will find interest in Baxter’s rhyolite, Katahdin granite and fossils. For wildlife enthusiasts, there are Moose and other wildlife and birds. There are 46 mountains peaks and ridges, 18 over 3,000 ft. Park is intersected by 175 miles of trails.

We will hike Mt. Katahdin and after we have that under our belt, hike sections of the AT as day hikes and explore other trails in the park. There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the rugged Maine wilderness from easy to difficult hikes, water rafting to kayaking. The section of the AT leading into the park winds along a river, stream and then along shores of several ponds. For hikes in Baxter visit http://www.mainerec.com/dayhike.asp?Category=109&PageNum=109

June 28th- Mt. Katahdin. Elev. Gain 4,189 ft. 10.5 miles. There are multiple routes. AT or Hunt Trail, is very challenging with exposed terrain and large boulders to scramble up.
