SUGAR PINE

REGENERATION PROGRAM

On Tuesday 23 September 2019, students from

Years 4/5/6 went to the Sugar Pines in Laurel Hill.

The students were greeted by some members of the

Forestry Corporation of NSW and the General

Manager of Softwoods, who guided them through the

Sugar Pines. Students learnt about the growing cycle

of the forest and how important the forests are to the

local community and the ecosystem.

Students got their hands dirty as they planted 45 new

pine trees as part of a new Sugar Pine Walk. The

students had a lovely day and learnt some great

things about the amazing forests that surround

Batlow.

Term 3 has flown by with many activities and opportunities for our

students provided by staff at our school. Year 11 and 12 students have

completed their Preliminary and HSC Trials, students are participating in

work placement for VET subjects, and our Year 12 students are preparing

for the start of the HSC in Term 4.

There have been many sporting activities offered this term through the

Sporting Schools Grant obtained by Mr Kass and Ms Fallon, for the last

three weeks students have been involved in cricket coaching and I have been hearing wonderful

reports about the student participation and skills.

Our final assembly for Term 3 occurred on Tuesday 24 September 2019 and we acknowledged

the students who are moving through the positive levels in our merit system and also recognise

the Stage 4 and 5 students who participated in debating throughout the term. These students are

positive role models for our school and community and should be congratulated for their efforts

and attitudes to their schooling and work ethic.

This week, some of our Year 5 and 6 students were involved in an excursion to the Sugar Pine

Walk, our students have been asked by Ellen Kromer of the Forestry Corporation of NSW, Snowy

Region to be involved in the Sugar Pine Succession Planting. Students visited the site and planted

some trees as part of the new Sugar Pine Walk. There will be on-going excursions to this venue

and our remaining Year 5 and 6 students will be involved as well.

A gentle reminder that it is very important for parents and visitors to sign in at the office when

entering the school grounds, this is for the safety of our students, visitors to and staff. The

Department of Education requires all visitors to our site to be signed-in and behave in an

appropriate manner.

There has been an increase in students having Red Bull, Mother, soft drinks and various amounts

of lollies before starting school for the day, this amount of sugar and preservatives are not

recommended for children and we are witnessing the effects on their behaviour. If possible, please

do not send students with these items of food, as their bodies are not coping and is affecting their

learning and abilities to focus whilst at school.

I wish everyone a safe holiday, catch up on some well earnt rest and enjoy the warmth that is

slowly creeping into our days. We look forward to welcoming our students back to school on

Monday 14 October 2019.
