Band Report
Bathurst High Campus Bands and Vocal
group have been busy preparing for the end of
year activities and concerts in recent weeks.
On Tuesday 29th of November the music
department hosted band and vocal workshops
with students from the local primary schools
as part of the Iexplore program. Over fifty
young musicians and vocalists came and
worked with our experienced music students
and staff in a challenging and enjoyable day
of musical learning. Band students
concentrated on the complexities of ensemble
playing and improvisation techniques while
the vocal students learnt about harmonisation
and breath control. The day culminated in a
short but entertaining concert at the Year 7 2017 information night. Congratulations to all involved in this
successful program!
The Bathurst High Vocal group has also been busy preparing for their annual showcase held in the Theatre
foyer on Thursday 1st of December. These events have always offered high quality vocal entertainment and
this year was no exception.
The Bathurst High Concert Band featured at the annual presentation night held in the gym on December
6th. The band worked hard to develop new and challenging works for this event.
The annual Swing Factor and Chill Factor Concert will be held in the Bathurst High Theatre on Tuesday
the 13th of December. This event will again offer the highest quality Big Band music to be seen in this
region. Our award winning bands are performing at the highest level and this is an event not to be missed.
Doors open at 6pm!
Congratulations to all musicians, vocalists,
teachers, parents and friends involved in our
Music Ensemble program on another success-
ful year.
The Arts and Public Education are alive and
well in the Bathurst Community.

News from the Principal
Geoff Hastings
Principal
Thank You Bathurst High Community and thank you to these wonderful staff
The last few weeks have been a little bit of a blur but I am pleased to say that most of the staffing is in
place for 2017. A quick summary of our staff who are leaving and a huge thank you to all of them.
Sandra Chapman—English Head Teacher and Head Teacher Senior School, Sandra transformed the
teaching of English and Ancient History at the school, Sandra has been an integral part of the leadership of
Bathurst High for nearly two decades. She will be taking leave for a year before officially retiring at the
end of 2017. There are generations of students and teachers who have been influenced and mentored by
“Chappers”. She is a legend of the school.
Janine Browning—has been casual and permanent at Bathurst High since the late 1980s. Mrs Browning
has been a “go to” Maths teacher and an outstanding Mathematics practitioner. She has made maths
understandable for thousands of students. She is deeply embedded in Bathurst High and has been our
major events organiser—Year 12 presentation and presentation night, for many years. She will be missed.
Catherine Reid—as the Acting Head Teacher Creative Arts for the last two years she has overseen a large
and diverse faculty and transformed it. She has also been an outstanding teacher of dance for over ten
years and her commitment has resulted in a huge increase in our dance elective and dance ensemble
numbers. She is moving to Kuringai High School as Head Teacher Creative Arts.
Also to some of our teachers who have not been at Bathurst High as long as the above but we wish them
all the best. All are leaving for positions elsewhere and this is a tribute to their talent and willing to
develop professionally. Thank you to Mr Luke Gillmer who has, with Ms Strickland, been a formidable
Year 7 student advising team. To Ms Lisa Cebokli who has achieved some wonderful HSC results in
Chemistry, Ms Angela Forbes in Science who has been with us for two years and has developed into an
outstanding teacher, Mr Chris Bell who has taught English and our literacy/numeracy class wonderfully.
Mr Bell also lobbied for, and occupied the position of boys advisor. Mr Mark Harlor who has occupied
many teaching positions within the school with great professionalism and energy. He has also used his
musical expertise to assist with many performing arts productions.
I wish them all well on behalf of the community of Bathurst High and thank them for their service.
Start of School 2017
The arrangements for the start of school in 2017 are similar to previous years. Full details will be on our
website but the first day ( 27th Jan) is a school development day for teachers and administration staff. Any
contact with the school can be made through the school email address [email protected]
which will be monitored through the holidays at various times.
Thank you and Goodbye
I can’t express my thanks to the whole of the Bathurst High community easily. Constantly I am told by
outsiders of the outstanding “culture” of our school. That comes from the students and staff working
together every day. Difficulties and disputes arise and that is absolutely normal but I thank all the parents
and students who work with staff to try and look for solutions in a respectful way. Bathurst High is a great
school and I am so lucky to have had the privilege of working as a Head Teacher and
Principal here for fifteen of my thirty seven years in public education. I will watch the
future journey with interest and support the school from a distance. Have a safe and
happy Christmas and others will all do it again in 2017.

College Principal’s Report
College Staffing
As we approach the last days of 2016, there are a number of staffing positions that I am aware will change.
Mrs Chapman (Head Teacher Senior Studies, Bathurst HC) will take leave prior to retiring. Mrs Chapman
has been a tireless worker who has kept me very organised over the last couple of years. I know that
students, parents and staff alike have appreciated her expertise in all things to do with shared courses,
Future Directions and HSC Seminar Days.
Ms Burt has been relieving in the role of Head Teacher Junior Studies, Bathurst HC, since Mrs Bertolin left
for Canobolas Rural Technology HS at the beginning of 2014. Ms Burt has done an outstanding job
coordinating School Within a School, enrichment programs and supporting Iexplore with our partner pri-
mary schools. Now that Mrs Bertolin has been confirmed as a permanent Deputy Principal at Canobolas,
Ms Barr (currently Head Teacher, Science, Bathurst HC) has moved into this position.
I am in the process of upgrading one of the College Head Teacher positions to Deputy Principal status, in
order to further enhance the work of the College Executive. This will be largely funded through an
allowance that the College receives due to my position as Deputy President of the NSW Secondary
Principals’ Council.
Of course, Mr Hastings is retiring after 11 years as Principal,
Bathurst High Campus. During his extensive career, Mr Hastings
has provided outstanding service to schools throughout the cen-
tral west of NSW as well as serving as an executive member of
the NSW Secondary Principals’ Council. As well as being
named a Life Member of SPC in June this year, I was privileged
to be present when he received a prestigious National Award
from the Principal Australia Institute. I wish Mr Hastings all the
very best for the next phase of his career. I am already aware of
other avenues that Mr Hastings will be pursuing and I know that
he will be quite busy in 2017!
High Achievers’ Reception
Parents of our top achievers in Years 10 and 11 at both campuses will have already received their invitation
to the Annual High Achievers’ Reception, to be held at the Charles Sturt University School of Engineering
on Tuesday 31st January. This is the first week that students are back at school, and is a great way to kick
of the academic year.
Year 12 students will receive their invitations as soon as the HSC results are released on Thursday 15th
December.
Merry Christmas and a Happy Holiday to all!
Craig Petersen
College Principal
