Bathroom Renovations
You are working for J.J. Titley Homes ‐ a
building form that specialises in home
renovations and extensions. The boss has
passed on a job to you for you to investigate
and plan. It is the upgrade of the owner’s
bathroom . His name is Larry Titley; he will
only pay for the materials as the project labour
costs will be covered by the company.
Bathrooms and kitchens are the most
expensive rooms in a house to renovate, but a
few improvements and a couple of simple decorating tricks can turn a bathroom nightmare into
something quite attractive.
In this project you are required to work through a simulated renovation task. In this task you will:
1. Determine the jobs needed to be completed and calculate the costs, and other
requirements for this
2. Choose a combination of items Larry can afford that will give him a complete bathroom
make over
3. Make recommendations about colours and accessories you think would help to make the
bathroom be function and look good.
4. Prepare a proposal for Larry that outlines your suggestions and total costs.
Larry Titley has decided he wants to upgrade but only wishes to spend $5000 on materials to
support the renovating of the bathroom and toilet area.
The first thing to decide is what needs replacing or renovating … What can stay?
What steps should Larry take to complete the job? Below are the problem areas:
Bathroom door
New vanity
The bath
Bathroom tiles [walls]
Bathroom floors
Toilet
Accessories

The door: You can choose to either replace the door, or sand and repaint it.
If you chooses to renovate the old door you will need 2‐3 sheets of sand
paper at 95cents each, a thin undercoat at $18 and a tin of enamel paint at
$30 per 4L. [Coverage is 14m2]
To replace the door, costs $53.12 each.
Which choice is cheaper?
The vanity The vanity is in poor repair, the sink is cracked and stained and
the taps are leaking. You have two choices here : Purchase a
new vanity or build a new one.
Choice 1: Purchase a new vanity:
Prices for new vanities can range from $400 to over $1500. This
would limit the budget.
Choice 2: Build a new one:
You would need to purchase all items and then construct the
vanity.
The table below shows the cost of materials required to build
his vanity.
How much will it cost to build a new vanity?
Is the home‐built version cheaper? What is the difference in cost?
MATERIALS COSTS
Sink $65
Wood – 6lengths $32 per length
2 doors $28 each
2 hinges $0.65 each
2 sheets sandpaper $0.95 each
Paint $18
Plumbing supplies $38
2 doorknobs $1.40 each
$53.12 each BuyBuildingSupplies.com.au
$ 1,129.70
$ 491.40

The bath
There are three options for the bath:
Option 1 – Remove old bath and replace for new one
Option 2 – Buy a bath‐resurfacing kit and restore the old bath
Option 3 – Leave the bath as it is
Which option will give a good looking bathtub for least amount
of money?
Bathroom walls
Tiles are needed on the wall above the side of the bath, behind the vanity and on the side of the
bath. The old tiles need to be removed and new ones put in their place. The diagram below, show
the walls of the bathroom and toilet [not to scale].
Calculate the wall area that you will be covering with tiles.
$345.00
$300 plus 10% GST

Larry wants you to use plain
coloured tiles that cost $13.75 per
square metre.
Calculate the cost of the tiles, allowing 10% extra tiles for cutting.
Larry wishes the rest of the walls to be painted.
What is the area that will be painted?
The walls will require two coats of paint to be water tight and for protection.
If the paint costs $65 per 4L and covers 40m2, how much will the paint job cost?
The floors
The floors of the bathroom and toilet are concrete, covered in very bold lino. You are going to pull
the old lino off and either, paint the floors or lay tiles over it. The dimensions of the floors are:
Bathroom – 3m by 1.8m
Toilet – 1.9m by 1.2m
Draw a scale diagram of the floors to create a floor plan.
What is the total floor area for the two areas?
Larry has seen some tiles he likes. He really likes the more expensive
brand and would like to have them if his budget allows it.
How much will it cost for this type of tile?
$20.40Per metre2

The toilet
The actual toilet is very old and stained. A replacement toilet will cost $259 and a plumber would
need to be paid to install the new one. The plumber will charge $25 per quarter‐hour or part
thereof. He estimates that it will take him 80 minutes to install the toilet, if Larry has everything
ready and has removed the old toilet.
Calculate the cost of replacing the toilet.
Accessories
Larry would like to finish his project off with matching accessories and fittings.
The table below show the accessories Larry would like to add to his renovation.
Larry plans to spend up to $100 on new towels.
How many can he buy?
Larry was quoted $850 for a fitted glass shower screen.
What fraction of the cost of the glass screen is the cost of a clear
plastic curtain?
ITEM COST
Large towels $42.46
Clear plastic shower curtain $25
Patterned shower curtain $20
Decorative soap holder, bin, and vase for
flowers
Typical
$20 each

The budget…
The renovation planning is complete, but has your work kept Larry to his budget? Remember his
initial budget amount was $5000.
Calculate the overall cost of all of the renovations.
Use a table like the one below to help you with this task:
RENOVATION COST TO COMPLETE
The door [chose to buy new]
Vanity [chose to build]
Bathtub [chose to buy new]
Tiles on walls
Painting of walls
Floors [chose the expensive tile]
Toilet replacement
Accessories
‐ Towels
‐ Plastic shower curtain
Have you kept Larry to his budget? Calculate the percentage you are recommending Larry
overspends/saves in this renovation.
Prepare all of the above elements into a report explaining the decisions you have made and the
calculations to support your costings.
This report is to be submitted to your boss (i.e. the teacher).
