Principal’s Message

It’s the end… The moment has been prepared for. The time has come to say farewell to another Year 12 group. This week is their last in thirteen years of school, although the final HSC examination will be held on Tuesday 7 November. One of the most pleasing observations I could make about the current crop of students is their commitment to study has remained strong as the end has drawn closer. For several reasons, the school executive decided to schedule the Trial HSC examinations earlier this year but it was feared that this may prompt a premature decline in attendance, attitude and performance. By and large, this has not been the case, with most students realising that substantial gains can be made at this late stage. Year 12 teachers will be available right through to the exams, including at tutoring sessions in the library of the upcoming holidays. Even students who have secured early entry to university before the first English paper on Monday 16 October should maintain rigorous study regimens until the last examination is over (which happens to be Drama).

Our traditional Year 12 breakfast will be served at 8am this Thursday, to be followed by our formal presentation assembly. Families of all Year 12 students are warmly invited to join us.

ELC Leadership Dinner The annual Eurobodalla Learning Community Leadership Dinner was held last Monday night. Over 200 students and parents from the public schools between Batemans Bay and Central Tilba gathered to recognise a range of outstanding achievements over the past twelve months and to celebrate public education. A common thread bonded Batemans Bay High School’s acts and award recipients, that being the performing arts. The assembled guests were treated to a piece from the Southern Stars production which showcased the

cooperation between our school and Broulee Public School. Those who had not seen the circus troupe in action were left in awe. This was followed by Drew-Ellyn Cooke’s solo guitar instrumental which immediately silenced the room only to be followed by rapturous applause. The outgoing senior SRC was then presented with a token of thanks for their service, with many of them having just performed with the circus. This year’s Public Education Ambassador was Sam Aspinall. A former student, Sam is one of many who have maintained their association with the school since graduating. Through teachers Mr Geoff Perrem and Ms Sharon McCutcheon, to whom many throughout Batemans Bay are indebted, Sam has supported the school’s Creative and Performing Arts projects on a regular basis. He has donated his time, resources and expertise to every school production since 2000, including The Journey, Saltwater and The Night Circus, ensuring their success and providing incomparable experiences for our students.

Last but not least, school vice president Ella Pearce was an outstanding compere, who went from introducing guests to performing with the circus and again without missing a beat.

School Planning – Save the Date We are looking for parents, not just P&C members, to assist staff and students with the 2018-2020 school plan. There will be a planning afternoon on Tuesday 17 October at 3:15pm in the school library. Anyone is welcome to take part and it would be appreciated if you could let the office know of your intentions in advance.

From the Deputies The end of Term 3 marks an important time for our current Year 12 students as they leave school, ready themselves for exams and then move on to their future. In essence, schooling has taken up the most time in their lives to this point and there will be many memories, stories and experiences that will stay with them forever.

However, it is the time to move into their “real” life, find their own way and start to make all their own decisions. There are many things we want our students to take away with them but it is their attitude and the way they approach life that would be the most important.

Learning and School

When you’re in high school, there’s a big emphasis on your Year 12 results. Will you get the marks you want and be accepted into your chosen course at University or will you get that trade, apprenticeship, job or not. Studies have shown that most Year 12’s have no idea what they want to do next. They may travel, study, work, volunteer, take a break, or do a combination of those things. Having their whole life in front of them may be exciting, but it’s also confusing.

There are many possible ways to approach life after Year 12 and yet one common theme emerges: you don’t need to have all the answers when you walk out of school. You will find your way eventually and mostly this is done through trial and error.

Research shows that school leavers will have three to five careers during their working life so there is no need to worry about making a wrong choice that you have to live with forever. A young person’s first choice will rarely be their last.

During this time the most important learning that a student will need is in their Mindset, or, HOW THEY THINK.

Developing and continuing a Growth mindset is vital to success in life.

Using this way of thinking will help all students to learn and continue learning even beyond school. It allows failure to be seen as part of learning and not a negative, it allows everyone to be successful, to continue to grow and to actually enjoy life’s challenges.

Acknowledging Students and Staff We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of our Year 12 students. We are proud of what you have achieved so far and the young people you have become. We wish you all the best in the future and encourage you to stay focused on your study and keeping positive throughout.

We would like to also recognise the enormous task it is to be a Year Advisor and congratulate Mrs Bradshaw on her support and work with all of you over the last six years.

You never leave someone behind, you take a part of them with you and leave a part of yourself behind.

Student Achievement

Rebecca Bartley, Year 11 Many of the photographs you have seen recently in our newsletter and online are the work of Rebecca Bartley. A current Visual Arts and former Photography student, Rebecca has shown great talent in capturing moments that help tell the story of our school.

ACT Mountain Bike Championships Eight students made the early trip up the mountain to compete in the ACT MTB Championships being held at Stromlo Forest Park on Friday 25 August, and were met with beautiful clear skies. The four hour race is a relay format, with one student from each team on course at a time. Students transition before tagging their next team member. Event competitor numbers were at a record high of 660 with over 100 girls competing.

Students competed on a beautiful single track winding through blossoming wattle and a mixture of eucalypt and pine forests. Two new students Zoe Vandenbergh and Jackson Whalan were excited to be competing for the first time and shone with enthusiasm throughout the day.

All students represented Batemans Bay High School with outstanding sportsmanship and pride. The mixed category team including Zoe Vandenbergh, Alex Graham, Hamish Laverack and Jack McFarlane took second place at the completion of the race and were exhausted and happy with their result.

In term two, our mountain bikers competed in the Coondoo Classic in Currambene State Forest, South Nowra. Students performed strongly though narrowly missed out on placing. Congratulations to Sam O’Keeffe on the day in competing for the first time.

Topaz Eaton Excellence in Visual Arts Congratulations to Topaz Eaton a graduate of Batemans Bay High School and a winner of the Wilkins Prize for Excellence. This means Topaz is awarded once again for her efforts in HSC Visual Arts 2016. Topaz had her Body of Work selected for the annual ARTEXPRESS exhibition at the Amory in Sydney which then travelled to the Western Plains to be exhibited there where she received the Prize. Topaz’ work has been acquired for The Department of Education’s permanent collection of art works dating back to 1984.

Batemans Bay High School

William Wilkins was the first head of the Department of Education in New South Wales. He arrived in Australia in 1851 and for the next 30 years was education’s leading figure, leaving an indelible legacy of vision and quality. In the early years of the new colony William Wilkins emphasised the value of drawing and visual arts in the education of New South Wales students. The collection was named in his honour in 1984.

Works have been collected since 1974 and exhibited in the William Wilkins Gallery in the Bridge Street Office of the Department of Education. They are also highly sought after to enhance the working environments of many government departments. The Arts Unit coordinates the purchase of works for the Wilkins Collection.
