The Foundling Hospital was Britain’s first home forabandoned children. It was established in 1739 by CaptainThomas Coram “for the maintenance and education ofexposed and deserted young children” and from then untilthe Hospital closed in 1954 some 27,000 children passedthrough its doors. In 1740 William Hogarth donated hisportrait of Coram to the Hospital, encouraging other artiststo follow his example, and thus creating the first public artgallery. George Frideric Handel, another early governor, held annual fund-raising performances there of his Messiah. A room at the Museum is dedicated to Handel memorabilia. The 40th Anniversary BASO Dinner will take place in thePicture Gallery, and guests will be free to wander around thisfascinating and poignant exhibition.
