This charming and delicate lidded basket is made with No. 1

reed. Spokes are added to both the basket and lid in a hexagonal

weave pattern. Basket border is woven with two trac borders –

one that the lid fits on and the other as the lid stop. A beaded

pull completes the basket. Approx. 5 3/4” D x 2 ½” H

Students will taper reed staves and insert

them into a walnut wood base then weave

with dyed brown hamburg cane over a mold

in your choice of weave pattern. The turned

walnut rim will be glued on and top it off

Learn to lash a bottom with white hamburg cane.

You won’t want to put anything in this basket as

the bottom is so beautiful. Students will twill up

This fun, creative piece starts with a hand thrown pottery base that

is made with holes in the top to accommodate the spokes. Spokes

are inserted and the fun begins. Choosing from a wide variety of

colors, textures, and fibers, students will weave a beautiful tapestry

weave. Two rim options will be available to choose from.

Approx. 5-6” W x 9” H Intermediate

Class, prep & material fee $55

Students insert flat reed spokes into a round slotted wood

base. Techniques include start/stop weaving, triple twined

arrows, and adding leather handles to the rim. Shaping will

be emphasized while the sides are woven. Color choices for

the triple twined arrows and leather handles will be available.

Class, prep & material fee $53

Students insert dyed or smoked flat oval spokes into a round

slotted wood base. The entire basket is woven in

continuous twill weave using 3mm flat oval weavers.

Shaping will be emphasized while the sides are woven so

the planter pot fits inside the finished basket. A plastic pot

is included. Some color choices will be available for the

spokes. Approx. 7” D x 6” H Intermediate

Students will taper reed staves and insert them into a

walnut wood base then weave with cane over a mold.

The turned walnut rim will be glued on. The red and

Using Italian wirelace, students learn to create wings and a

body. A variety of colors will be available from which to

Enjoy this round reed creation. Ridge weave is the basis for the

central design of this basket bordered by a row of 4-rod wale

above and below. The rows of ridge weave are later enhanced

walnut wood base then weave with dyed dark brown

hamburg cane over a mold. The half round reed rim

will be glued, nailed, and lashed on. The lashing will

POWDERED PIGMENTS AND COILING MARLA HELTON

This is a solid woven base incorporating two D handles.

Use space dyed reed to achieve the stained glass window

affect. Learn to wrap weave the handles as you go using

hamburg cane. The decorative X’s on the side of the

basket are hamburg cane as well. (You may need to

finish the overlay “X” on your own.) This is a great size

for DVD, pantry, etc. Approx. 6”W x 12” L x 8” H (with

This class introduces students to the beautiful options of

coloring a gourd with powdered pigments. Everyone will

get to experiment with a variety of luscious colors to

create the one just right for them. After sealing the colors,

students will drill holes and learn to coil weave using

danish cord. Hand dyed silk ribbon and mizuhiki will be

used as accents on this beautiful and creative piece. If

easily available please bring a cordless drill with 1/16"

drill bit and hair dryer. Old clothes or a smock is a good

idea for the pigment portion of the class. Approx. 7”W x

Weaving on a Williamsburg style handle, students will weave

a filled base, learn chase weaving, triple twining, and stacked

weaving while increasing the height of the ends of the basket.

This beautiful, large basket is then topped off with a rolled

Gretchen border. Some of the border may need to be

completed after class time. Color will be natural and tan.

shoulder, neck and wrist pain and tension. Marla will offer this half hour class using gentle yoga techniques

for opening up those tight areas and is suitable for all body types. Most of this class will be done in a sitting

position and can be modified for those in a wheelchair or using a walker. Please wear comfortable clothing.

beads make up the central design which

is bordered with dyed 3-rod arrows above

and below. The border is a unique

variation of a looped border.

Students will insert pretapered and prebent cherry wood staves into

a cherry wood base then weave with cane over a puzzle mold. The

turned cherry rim will be glued on and top it off with a turned

cherry lid. Approx. 5 ½” W x 7” H

All Levels Class, prep & material fee $85

Begin with an oval slotted wood base with an attached handle,

students will insert spokes into the base, twine them in place, then

weave start/stop rows up the sides, continually focusing on

shaping. A piece of dyed reed is woven in with a cross-stitch

technique, a single row of triple twining is added, and the braided

handle wrap is woven before the rim is lashed. Some color

choices will be available for the accent weaving.

Approx. 10”Wx15”L (top) x 6”H (plus handle) Intermediate

Starting with a dyed gourd, students will learn a unique way of

stitching on flat beads. Once the beads are attached, reed goes into the

holes and the top is woven with a continuous chase weave with reed

and seagrass. Some color selections will be available. If easily

available, please bring a cordless drill with a 1/16” drill bit. Approx.

COCOA-A-GO-GO JAN SCHMIDT

Start with a wood base and weave on a mold with

dyed cane and dyed round reed so your shaping will

be perfect. Start with continuous weave of cane side

out, then weave with dyed side out in the middle

section doing a braid weave. The variety of weaves

done make this a sampler basket. Colors are cocoa

brown, tans, and blacks. Approx. 5” x 6” x 3 ½” H

University in Winona MN. Very talented and experienced teachers have been invited to instruct and share their

talents. Come join us for 3, 2, or even 1 day of relaxation and fun! We look forward to seeing you again to renew

old friendships, or meeting you for the first time to create new ones.

The workshop will be held at Tau Conference Center, ( http://winona.edu/parking then “Parking Maps” for West

Campus). It is located at 511 Hilbert Street. The web site has a map and driving directions. Contact Deb if you

need a printed map. We will again be in the Rotunda Room, a first floor large round room with lots of windows

and plenty of room for classes and store area. Overnights are available at the newly built dorms - New Center - on

the corner of Huff St & Mark St. They are a short drive from the Tau Center Available are 4 bedroom suites,

each with 1 bathroom, shower room, and double vanity. See www.weavinwinona.com for a layout of the rooms.

There is no sitting area in the suites, however each floor has a small kitchen area and lounge which can be used for

gatherings in the evening. You may want to bring your own radio, alarm clock, TV, or extra towels if you want

them. Check-in times will be sent to you when confirmations are mailed. We will be offering lunches at the Tau

Center, or there are several area fast food chains and restaurants to visit. Area hotels are listed below if you prefer

those accommodations. You are encouraged to make your registration early – there are several other area events

during our timeframe.

Registration is by mail only. All registrations postmarked by March 10th

will be opened in random order and

placed on the class list with confirmations mailed about April 15th
