WELCOME

Are you giving online?

Three reasons to sign up: Online giving is the gift

that keeps on giving. It’s a win-win for you and your parish. Let our online giv-ing system streamline the

process!

1. It means less for you to think about. Setting up automatic recurring gifts means no more forgetting to write a check, put in it your envelope, bring it to church, or put it in the offering plate. Fewer checks to buy. Instead, our system automatically and safely debits your bank account or credit card on the dates you choose.

2. It means less effort for parish staff and volun-teers. Online gifts are automatically counted, rec-orded and deposited. Less to count, record, and take to the bank. No danger of putting anybody out of a job, but online giving conserves our pre-cious human resources.

3. It helps you stick to your plan. Once you’ve de-cided to donate to your parish, automating it online means that at the end of the year, you’ve carried out your good intentions.

SAVE THE DATE

Fr. Ray Kelly is a 64-year-old parish priest at St. Brigid Catholic Church in Old Castle, Ireland, who loves to sing. He became an overnight internet star in 2014 when an amateur video was posted on YouTube. While presiding at a wedding, Fr. Ray sang Leonard Cohen’s iconic song “Hallelujah” with the lyrics personalized for the couple. The video has since reached over 61 million views. Fr. Kelly will give a concert here at the Basilica on Saturday, Sept. 29 to benefit the Basilica restoration project. VIP tickets will include premium seating and entrance to a post-concert reception with Fr. Ray, who will greet guests and sign CDs. Please plan to attend, mark your calendars, and help spread the word! After his big break online, Fr. Ray went on to record a couple of CDs. This spring he appeared on “Britain’s Got Talent,” where he thoroughly wowed Simon Cowell, who declared Fr. Ray’s rendition of REM’s “Everybody Hurts” to be one of his “favorite ever auditions.”

How did this concert come about? A friend of ours from St. Brigid’s Catholic Church in San Antonio who’s also a member of the Irish Society here sent an email to Fr. Ray last year. She wanted to know if he would be doing a USA concert tour in 2018 and where he would be performing. In 2015, he had done a concert in New York City for the Irish Society on St. Patrick’s Day. She wanted to know if he was going to do that again. She never expected to hear from him, but several weeks later he re-sponded and said he would like to come to San Anto-nio during his September 2018 US concert tour. All parties agreed that the best place for the concert was the Basilica. General Admission: $25 Reserved Admission: $60 VIP Tickets: $75 Both the reserved and VIP tickets include an invitation to the reception that follows the concert with wine, cheese, dessert and coffee, along with a chance to meet Fr. Ray Kelly and have CDs signed.

FEATURED ARTICLES

Thank you for your donations to help replace the AC units!

You may have noticed something going wrong at church, but may not have under-stood the cause. For some time, the AC units in the sacristy and altar areas of the church haven’t been functioning.

The loss of function in these areas impacts the performance of the main units: the system can’t regulate itself. As the main units struggle to compensate for the overheating in the front of the church, out in the pews you may be freezing while the priests are roasting in their vestments behind the altar rail.

Five years ago the heater units went out in the Basilica. We asked for donations, and many of you responded generously, coming together to raise over $50,000 to replace the units.

This time, we needed a smaller amount, to replace the two smaller units that serve the front of the church.

Your generous response has allowed us to move forward with ordering the units.

If you are interested in helping with other restoration projects around the Basilica, please contact the parish office and ask for Anna Migeon, or send her an email at [email protected]!
