The Rockwell Hardness Tester is a simply constructed machine used for testing easily
and quickly the hardness of materials ranging from the softest to the hardest and
boasting of its wide range. The impression marked on the surface of specimens minute,
it can also be applied to test finished goods.
The Rockwell Hardness Number derived from the net increase in the depth of
impression as the load on a penetrator is increased from a fixed minimum load to higher
load and then returned to the minimum load. The hardness number is directly read on
the dial. When a tester is conducted the point is penetrated with a minor load of 10 kg.
load taken as the basic point for penetration of an indenter on the surface of a specimen.
The penetrator for the Rockwell Test include steel balls of several specified diameters
and a diamond-spheroconical penetrator having an included angle of 120-deg. with a
spherical tip having a radius of 60 kgf 0.2mm.
The test load (major load) is customarily 60 kgf(588.4N) or 100 kgf(980.7N) when a
steel ball is used as a penetrator, but other loads may be used when found necessary, and
usually 150 kgf(1471N) when a diamond spheroconical penetrator is employed. The
ball penetrator is 1/16” in diameter normally but other penetrator of large diameter such
as 1/8”, 1/4” or 1/2” may be employed for soft metals. Thus variety of loads and
penetrators are provided and experience decides the best combination for use.

This unit has been designed and manufactured for the purpose of
making measurement on hardness of extremely thin plates, surface of
testing materials, extremely soft materials and extremely hard ones.
With lighter load than the standard model, it is pressed and depth can
be measured in higher accuracy.
The standard load is 3 kgf(29.42N).
There are 3 kinds of testing load such as 15 kgf(147.1N), 30
kgf(294.2N) and 45 kgf(441.3N).
Accessories, size of machine, size of material which can be tested are
same as the standard ROCKWELL HARDNESS TESTER overleaf.
