Islam in Katara is an exciting project conducted in part-

nership between Fanar, Qatar Islamic Cultural Center and

    Katara, Te Cultural Village Foundation.

It is a project designed specically or the non-Muslim

community, who have decided to spend a part o their livesin the beautiul country o Qatar. Te programme utilises

the beautiul grounds o Katara , and the mosque ound

on the main promenade, to explain some o the basics o

Islam and its integral nature to the lie o the Muslim.

Te setting is relaxed, interactive and is delivered by native

English speakers. It is a perect opportunity or people to

learn about the new country they are residing in, or have

decided to visit, in a relaxed, open environment.

Mahad, Te education Department has been unctioning

rom the very creation o the center. Te department has

a clearly dened set o goals and subject areas, and has

worked tirelessly in bringing around the necessary cur-

    ricula to support their work.

Te Education Institute at Fanar decided to ocus on

three key areas: the Arabic language, Islam, and (Fanar

and Ministry o Awqa ) sta development. Te develop-

ment o the curriculum depended upon the subject area

being developed, so or elds such as ICDL, we took the

syllabus rom the world leaders. In the other two areas

o our work, ater much research, we ound that exist ing

curricula were not suitable to the specic needs o the

non-native speakers, the dynamics o Qatar, or were not

contemporary enough. Hence, the department set about

developing its own material, and used a unique approach

    in its development.

Te Arabic Course at Fanar is split into ve levels which,

because o its script, start w ith the very basics o the a lpha-

bet, and progress to a stage where the student is procient

in speaking, reading, writing and listening. Te course is

structured in a unique manner, based upon the sound o

a letter. Tis style a llows people to understand one o the

major dierences between Arabic and other languages. It

allows people to nd the very subtle, yet highly important,

dierences between letters that oten sound the same but

will have a major impact on the meaning o a word.

Te syllabus has been designed to be simple and clear,

building up the knowledge and abil ity o the student in

gradual phases, and is created in such a way that the teach-

ers support this growth. Tis is ev ident in the number o

exercises ound throughout the course, al lowing each part

to be put into practice, a long with a comprehensive range

o pictures to support the material.

We have developed interactive multimedia material to

support and supplement the course, and have a purpose

built language lab that wi ll al low people to spend their

ree time practicing their newly learnt skills.

It has been made easy to memorise and remember.

Anyone can memorie it, be they young or old, Arab or

    non-Arab.

It is not boring to read or recite repeatedly and each time

one reads it, it oers new insights.

Scholars can never have enough pondering over it,

educating themselves rom it or learning more o its

    meanings.

Neither humankind nor Jinn can produce a chapter that

resembles it because it is an eternal miracle and proo.

The Quran is the Word o Allaah that cannotbe likened to any other words. It is protected rom

alsehood and corruption by AllaahHimsel. It

is written in a Preserved Book( Al Lawh Al Mahooth). It iseasy to learn and is oten contemplated, memorized, and

recited. Allaah Says (what means):{And We have indeedmade the Quran easy to understand and remember, then is there

    any that will remember?} [Quran 54: 17]

Allaah Says (what means): {[Tis is] a blessed Bookwhich We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that they might

reect upon its verses and that those o understanding would be

    reminded.} [Quran 38: 29]

Te Prophet said: He who recites or reads a letterrom the Book o Allaah gets a reward and the reward is multiplied

by ten. I dont mean Ali Laam Meem is a letter, rather, Ali isa letter, Laam is a letter and Meem is a letter. [At-irmithi]

Allaah granted a special elevated position to thosewho memorize and work according to it. Te Prophetsaid:Te best amongst you are those who learn the Quran and

teach it to others. [Al-Bukhaari].He also said: Te example o the believer who reads the

Quran is like the Utrujjah (a type o ruit). It has a nice smell

and a sweet taste. Te example o the believer who does not read

or recite the Quran is like a date, which has no smell but tastes

sweet. Te example o a hypocrite who reads the Quran is like

the Rayhannah, it smells nice but it tastes bitter. Te example o

the hypocrite who does not read the Quran is like the Hanthalah

(colocynth) which does not have any smell and it tastes bitter

    [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]

We ask Allaah to enable us to be included in the

ranks o the people o the Quran, not just in Ramadhaan, but all through our lives.

Allaah says (what means): {And He gave you romall you asked o Him. And i you should count the a-

vor o Allaah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed,

humankind is [generally] most unjust and ungrateul.}[Quran

14:34] {He causes to grow or you thereby the crops, olives, palm

trees, grapevines, and rom all the ruits. Indeed in that is a sign

    or a people who give thought.}[Quran 16:11]

Several scientic studies have conrmed the great im-

portance o dried dates, but many people know very little

about them. Amidst this ood o inormation and mod-

ern scientic advancement, I was real ly impressed with theProphets deep understanding o the value o dried dates,

when he said: Whoever can nd dates should break his astwith them-and whoever cannot nd dates should break his ast

with water, or truly it is pure. [At-irmithi]

Tis is a prophetic miracle that has been proved by

modern studies and researches, because a ter the absorption

process near the end o the ast the level o blood glucose

and insulin decrease in the hepatic portal vein, aecting pen-

etration o glucose into the hepatic cells and the peripheral

tissues (such as the muscular and neurological cells). At this

time, all the stored hepatic glycogen would have been de-

pleted and the tissues would depend on the oxidation o atty

acids as well as the oxidation o the glucose manuactured in

the liver rom the amino acids and glycerol to obtain energy.

Hence, quickly providing the body with glucose at this

time is very benecial, because it increases its concentra-

tion in the hepatic portal vein quickly immediately ater

its absorption. It enters the hepatic cells rst and then goes

to the brain cells, blood, muscular and neurological sys-

tem as well as the other body tissues that were prepared byAllaah to depend on sugars as their ideal nourishmentto generate energy.

Tis would stop the oxidation o the amino acids, block

the way beore the ormation o the harmul ketone bodies,

and end the symptoms o general weakness and simple dis-

orders in the neurological system, i any, that happen due to

the oxidation o large amounts o ats. Having glucose stops

the production o glucose in the liver, halting the destruction

o amino acids and preserv ing body proteins.

    Dried DateFrom Religion and Science

Dried dates have a special status in Islam and one has always wondered why

they receive all this attention? However, upon studying this issue careully, I

discovered that dried dates deserve all this appreciation and praise because they

are one o the countless great Divine blessings upon us.

Dried dates are one o the nest oods that are rich

in glucose and thereore they are ideal nourishmentor the body because they contain a high percent-

age o sugars (rom 75% to 87%) out o which glucose repre-

sents 55% and 45% ructose. Dried dates also include some

proteins, ats, and vitamins (A, B2 and B12) in addition to

some important minerals (including calcium, phosphor, po-

tassium, sulur, sodium, magnesium, cobalt, zinc, orin, cop-

per, manganese) and a percentage o cellulose.

Fructose transorms into glucose very ast and then

the digestive system absorbs it to quench the bodys thirst

or energy, especially or some tissues that directly depend

on it such as brain cells, neurological cells, red blood cellsand bone marrow cells.

Fructose and cellulose activate the vermiorm move-

ment o the intestines. Phosphorus is also important in nour-

ishing the brain chambers and it enters in the structure o

phosphate compounds that transport energy and control its

    use in all body cells.

Moreover, all the vitamins o the dried dates play a

vital role in assimilation (A, B1 and B2), as well as biotin,

riboavin and others. Tey also serve as tranquilizers, while

minerals play a key role in orming some enzymes that are

necessary or some vital body processes. Tey also play avery important role in the contraction and extension o the

muscles as well as the acid-base neutrality. Tis removes any

muscular or nervous tension, and causes the body to relax.

Research also shows that phosphate resists aging.

On the other hand, i one breaks his ast on atty sub-

stances or those rich in protein, that will require a long period

to be digested and then absorbed, this will not satisy the

bodys urgent need or energy in addition to allowing the

amino acids to increase in the body as a result o havingood that does not contain sugars which causes a decrease

    in blood sugar.

In addition to vitamins and minerals, dr ied dates con-

tain bers, which play a very important role in activating

movement o the intestines, i.e., it serves as a natural laxative

that protects one rom constipation, indigestion and related

    problems.

Moreover, ripe dates contain a percentage o oxytocin

hormone which helps in the contractions o the blood ves-

sels in the uterus and prevents vaginal bleeding. Te Quran

reers to this act in the verse in which Allaah says (whatmeans): {And shake toward you the trunk o the palm tree; it will

drop upon you ripe, resh dates. So eat and drink and be contented.

And i you see rom among humanity anyone, say, Indeed, I have

vowed to Te Most Merciul abstention, so I will not speak today

    to [any] man.}[Quran 19:25-26]

All these benets show us the rationale behind the

command o the Prophet to break our ast on dates. Teguidance o the Prophet is or one to: Break his asting be-

    ore perorming the Maghrib Prayer with three resh date-ruits;

i there were no resh date-ruits, let him eat three dry dates; and

i there were no dry date-ruits; let him take three sips o water.[At-irmithi: Hasan]

It is very good to eat dates because they serve as ood

and cure or you, but it is better to eat them with the intention

o ollowing the guidance and Sunnah o the Prophet toreceive rewards in addition to nourishment and health by the

permission o Allaah. Finally, one should not orget tothank Allaah or this wonderul blessing.

    Why Dried Date?

For example, excessive use o stimulants (like tea

and coee), smoking, and over eating are all bad

habits that we have throughout the entire year and

that may continue with us in Ramadhaan. However, we

orget that these bad habits are the key actors behind our

poor perormance and lack o energy during the daytime

    in Ramadhaan.

Dear asting Muslim, we usually prepare ourselves

spiritually to receive the month o Ramadhaan, but now we

should want to learn how to also prepare ourselves physi-

cally to receive this blessed month healthily and vividly

through releasing our bodies and all o its systems rom

the burden o the bad habits that we became accustomed

to throughout the year. Finally, I remind you that strong

determination and willpower are the essence o success

    and change.

We all know that Ramadhaan is a distinguished

month, and it thereore represents a golden opportunity

to instill an idea or get rid o a bad habit. Tereore, we

should all seize this g reat opportunity to change our habits

and lead a distinguished lie making use o the Divine

    blessings o this great month.

We sincerely ask Allaah to guide us all and toaccept our good deeds.

Lainess, headache, nervousness, obesity and poor time management are some o

the negative phenomena that we notice rom the frst day o Ramadhaan and which

Beore the coming o Ramadhaan, try to have a l ight

meal beore the Fajr prayer, even i you are not go-

ing to then ast. Tis should train your stomach to

start working later and not to eel so hungry or thirsty dur-

ing the early daytime in Ramadhaan.

Reduce the amount o stimulants (beverages that con-

tain caeine) you have every day and do so gradually; this

will slowly decrease the amount o caeine in your blood. In

this way, you will avoid a sudden decrease in caeine while

asting, which would adversely aect your mood and cause

headache and tension. For instance, i you dr ink three cups

o tea or coee, reduce this to two and then one during the

month o Sha'baan. Fina lly, try to replace this beverage with

    another, more benecial, one.

Do not start your day by drinking stimulants such as

tea, coee, or cola, but replace them with benecial drinks

like anise and roselle tea. Also try to lengthen the intervals

between smoking and between drinking stimulants as much

as possible. Complete your worship in Ramadhaan and i you

are a smoker, give up smoking or Allaahs sake.

Make your daily ood habits similar to those o Rama-

dhaan, to prepare your digestive system or the eating system

o the month o Ramadhaan, and ast a number o days dur-

ing the month o Sha'baan. In Ramadhaan be keen to delay

the Suhoor (predawn) meal as much as possible because the

Prophet recommended us to do so and delay dinner asmuch as you can, however, it should be at least one hour

    beore sleeping.

In the Suhoor meal have low digested sugars such as

pastry and r ice, and eat vegetables to acilitate digestion. Do

not orget ruits and dairy products.

Have a spoonul o honey in the Suhoor meal because

it is the only sugary substance that increases blood sugar

levels gradually and helps you withstand hunger during the

day. Also be keen to eat legumes, such as beans and lentils,

because they maintain the glucose in the blood or a long

period o time and this helps you nish your day with more

    liveliness and activity.

Avoid preserves and salty oods in the Suhoor meal

such as pickles, cheese, olives and sweets such as Kuna-

ah, baklava, mixed nuts, and atty and ried oods. Tis

is because these oods cause severe thirst during the day

and may cause indigestion. Drink water ater the Suhoor

meal moderately and especially in summer. And accustom

yoursel to drink ing some warm soup beore the main meal

or have some other light ood beore going to perorm the

Maghrib prayer. Tis prepares the stomach to receive ood

and to start secreting the gastric acids needed to do its job

well. Tis lessens the shock o large quantities o ood

    ater a long ast.

Break your ast as early as possible and start w ith dates

or water as the Prophet said, Whoever can nd datesshould break his ast with them and whoever cannot nd

    (At-irmithi)

reat any health problem beore the month o Rama-

dhaan begins. Beware o breaking your ast with a cigarette

or a cup o tea or coee because this agitates the stomach

and worsens your condition while asting. Do some simple

physical activities such as walking to help your body produce

    energy using stored ats.

Beware o eating and drinking excessively during the

month o Ramadhaan. Do not overeat at night because this

will deprive you o a ca lm sleep and you may not be able to

wake up and perorm prayer energetical ly. Accustom yoursel

to sleeping ater the taraaweeh prayer to be able to wake up

Sleep early ater the Ishaa prayer and try to wake up an

hour beore the Fajr prayer. Make sure that you sleep at least

Doctors have conrmed that Suhoor is more impor-

tant than the meal with which one breaks the ast

(Itaar) because it helps the person persevere through

the difculties o asting. Tis is the reason why our Prophet

advised us to eat it and encouraged us not to abandon itin many texts. For example, he said: Eat Suhoor. Indeed, there is a blessing in Suhoor. [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]

Part o the reason or the blessings that result rom

eating this meal is its strengthening the asting person and

giving him energy, thus making asting easy or him. Ad-

ditionally, by eating this meal one attains the reward o ol-

lowing the instructions o the Prophet. It is preerablethat this meal include vegetables that contain a high level

o uids, such as lettuce and cucumber, because this helps

the body maintain uids or a long period o time which

thus reduces the eeling o thirst and prevents dehydration.

Additionally, these types o vegetables are a good source or

vitamins and minerals. It is also recommended to have beans with olive oil,

cheese and eggs as a part o this meal. Tis is because it takes

the body 7-9 hours to digest these types o oods, and thus

ones hunger would be delayed. Also, these types supply the

body with the required energy throughout the day.

Do not consume large quantities o sugar or salt, be-

cause sugar triggers hunger, while salt triggers th irst.

It is important to delay the Suhoor meal until as close

to dawn as possible so as not to eel hungry or thirsty shortly

ater one starts to ast. Moreover, this was the advice o our

Prophet. Amr ibn Maymoon said: Te Companions would break their asts immediately at sunset (without anydelay) and would delay eating Suhoor (until as close to Fajr as

    possible). [Al-Bayhaqi]

Suhoor does not have to be a ull meal. Rather, one

can simply eat a date and would be considered as having

had Suhoor. Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet said: Te best Suhoor is (to eat) dates. [Abu Daawood]Ione cannot nd dates, then water would be sufcient or one

to attain the sought blessing promised by the Prophet.

    Suhoor (predawn meal)

    Beneft

The predawn meal (Suhoor) is one o the main meals during the

blessed month o Ramadhaan. It spiritually assists the believer to ulfll

asting as an act o worship.

    B Iameb.et

It prevents fatigue and headaches during the daytime.

It reduces extreme hunger and thirst.

It prevents the fasting person from feeling lazy,

sluggish or in need o sleep.

It prevents the loss of body cells.

It energizes and stimulates the digestive system.

It helps the body maintain its sugar levels while fasting.

Abu Bakr was a well-respected and rich merchant o Makkah, belonging to

the Quraysh tribe. When Muhammad was bestowed prophethood, Abu Bakr

was away in Yemen on business. When he came back, people gave him the

astounding news that Muhammad claimed to receive revelation rom Allaah

. Right away, he went to see the Prophet and asked him about the religion

Makkah in 573 C.E., he was just three years younger), Abu Bakr

was all too aware o his sincerity and truthulness to have any misgivings.

Question: I suered kidney ailure and

beginning, doctors advised me not toast, but ater three years, they diered

whether I should ast or not. Some

doctors said I would be able to ast,

    while others disagreed, considering that

    asting might weaken the transplanted

kidney. What should I do i I did not

ast as some doctors have advised me?

Should I make up or the days I did not

ast on, noting that I have already made

    expiation? May Allaah reward you.

All perect praise be to Allaah,

the Lord o the Worlds. I testiy

except Allaah, and that Muham-mad is His Slave and Messenger.

As or the days you did not

ast on and made expiation or, the

    preponderant opinion o scholars is

that you are not obliged to make up

or them. Tis is because when one

carries out what he is required to

do, he will be discharged rom any

urther duty. Moreover, you thoughtthat you would not be cured and thus

gave ood to the poor as expiation as

commanded. So, you are not required

to do anything else in this regard.

    In Al-Mughni, Ibn

    Qudaamah, may Allaah have mercy

upon him, said, I the Muslim gave

ood to the poor [as expiation or

breaking the ast] while he had no

hope o being cured, then, later he

became able to ast, he would not, most probably, be required to observe

makeup ast or the missed days.

Tis is because he is discharged rom

    liability by making the expiation

which was obligatory on him, so he is

not required to carry out what he has

    been discharged rom.

As or your asting, you must

ollow the opinion o the most

    trustworthy doctors. I they have

diered as you have mentioned, then

you should ollow the advice o the

most knowledgeable, particularlyi he possesses religious prudence

and piety, or gives the advice that is

supported by your experience o the

    eect o asting on you.

    So, respected brother, you

should consult the doctor whom you

trust most and who is more procient

in medicine and more religious. I

that doctor told you that asting

would harm you and aect your

transplanted kidney, it would be per-missible or you not to ast and you

will be obliged to give ood to one

I someone is making up or a missed

intention to that o a voluntary ast to

be able to break it or certain reasons,

    Te Shareeah has blocked the

way to trickery and threatens the

one who uses tricks with the severest

    o punishment. Regarding the Jews

who resorted to trickery to catch

    Says (what means): {And you

had already known about those whotransgressed among you concerning

the Sabbath, and We said to them, Be

    apes, despised.}[Quran 2: 65]

What is mentioned in the ques-

tion is nothing less than breaking

    and nulliying an obligatory ast.

    Scholars have unanimously agreed

that the person who starts perorm-

ing an obligatory act o worship is

not permitted to break it without aShareeah-approved excuse. Allaah

Says (what means): {.And do notinvalidate your deeds.}[Quran 47: 33]

    Consequently, i that person

    rom obligatory to voluntary asting

    has a Shareeah-approved excuse such

as illness or the like, he can break

his obligatory asting and there will

which are applied to the ace, back or any

other part o the body do not aect the ast-ing or break it.Tereore, creams and

    However, shaving the beard is

prohibited and it is not permissible

or the Muslim to do it either on a

day in Ramadhaan or at any other

time, and it is worthier or the asting

putting in the lemon juice; chickpea broth has a natural

sweetness that you may preer to leave untouched.

Khaalid ran around the corner without slowing down, his

heart beating aster than ever beore. He had to nd out

i it was tonight, he just had to. He arrived outside the

door o his house and knocked as hard as he could. Ten

he heard the sound o ootsteps coming to the door and

knocked again. Astaghrullah, who is smashing the door

down? said his grandma, opening the door. And where

is your salaam, she added, watching him run quickly

upstairs to his athers study. But it was too late, he was

already up the stairs and nearly there.

He burst in without knocking, orgetting his manners and

said, in such a ast manner that no one could understand,

Is it Ramadhaan yet? His ather looked up rom hiscomputer in surprise. Ater a ew seconds he answered,

First o all, 'assalamualaikum, and, second, knock on

my door beore you enter, and speak slowly and quietly.

Waailakumusalam ather, sorry, I just wanted to ask i it

    is Ramadhaan tonight.

    Yes it is Ramadhaan tonight.

I knew it would be tonight.

Are you excited?Yes, I am going to ast tomorrow.

InshAllaah. And tonight you are going to come to

taraaweeh with me, in the mosque.

A grumpy look appeared on Khaalids ace. His ather

spotted it almost immediately as i expecting it to happen.

He smiled and said, Why are you so unhappy?

Because the tarweeh is too long.

But the Prophet prayed taraaweeh. And taraaweeh makes

Allaah very happy with you and the longer the salaah isthe more good deeds you get.

Really, I am never going to complain again about

    taraaweeh.

Good boy, now get ready we have to go.

    Khaalid ran o happily.
