Inspiring Students For Scholarship and ServiceBarton College Launched Undergraduate Scholars Week

With funding from the College Access Challenge Grant Program of the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU), Barton College initiated a scholarship program to enhance college success for first-generation, low income, and minority undergraduate students in all majors. Students were selected through a competitive application process to collaborate with faculty on scholarship projects during the 2012 spring semester. Eleven students received stipends and presented their scholarship projects to the campus community in April during Undergraduate Scholars Week. Undergraduate Scholars Week also included poster presentations from students across campus.

Think Pink! Fight Like a Bulldog!

“Think Pink! Fight Like a Bulldog!” That was the cheer on Barton’s campus as the Barton College Association of Nursing Students (BCANS) raised awareness and funds for breast cancer research in October 2011 during BCANS’ annual “Think Pink! Fight Like a Bulldog!” event on campus. The 60-member nursing student organization raised over $2,000 through a variety of activities held on the campus commons, and 100 percent of the proceeds from the “Think Pink! Fight Like a Bulldog!” event were sent to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, which later featured Barton’s nursing students on its national web site, recognizing BCANS’ extra effort to raise awareness about breast cancer.

Inspiring Community Wilson-Barton Partnership Leadership Award Dinner

On the evening of Thursday, September 22, 2011, with the Lauren Kennedy and Alan Campbell Theatre providing a brilliantly-lit backdrop, nearly 300 leaders from Barton College and the Wilson community gathered to celebrate the many contributions made by alumnus and life-long resident, John F. Lee. With friends, family and colleagues present, Mr. Lee was presented with the seventh annual Wilson-Barton Partnership Business Leadership Award. The award, given annually in the form of a small wooden box, was hand crafted by a local craftsman, Stan Corbett, of walnut harvested from a tree that once stood at the Barton-Graves House. Recipient selection is based on significant contributions to business, strong leadership qualities, and dedication to the community.

11

Inspiring Student LifeDuring the 2011-2012 academic year, Barton’s Division of Student Affairs focused on five specific initiatives:

1.) Increase housing numbers in Residence Life; 2.) Expand Student Affairs programming to provide more offerings and diversity; 3.) Focus on commuting students as one element of retention effort; 4.) Expand Health/Wellness programming and support to better serve the campus community; and 5.) Enhance campus safety and security measures.

All initiatives achieved marked success.

Residence Life

Through focused one-on-one interviews with residential students, Residence Life was able to address specific needs and requests of campus residents, which resulted in an increase in total residential campus population and positively affected campus retention overall.

Student Affairs Programming

Student Affairs programming received a significant face-lift with the establishment of eight new student organizations, including those focusing on spiritual and multi-cultural interests. Of particular note was a significant increase in interest for multi-cultural programming and intramural sports, each providing additional participation opportunities and reporting increases in participation. In addition, the re-organization of New Student Programming, Greek Life, and Student Activities under one director greatly enhanced campus programming as a whole.

Focus on Commuter Students

Student Affairs Staff conducted one-on-one interviews with a selected population of commuter students (determined to be “at risk”), which proved beneficial in curbing attrition of this specific student population. This effort supported a strategic retention agenda established by this division.

Health/Wellness

An expansion of Health/Wellness programming and support to better serve the campus community proved successful through several initiatives that included hires of a new campus counselor and staff nurse in the Lee Student Health Center. Combining their wealth of knowledge and experience with the expertise and dedication of the Nurse/Executive Director of Campus Health Services has realized a fresh and creative approach to campus Wellness Services. Health/Wellness programming has increased significantly and, in turn, has generated much stronger student participation.

Campus Safety

Campus Safety continues to be a priority for Student Affairs. The Campus Emergency Response Plan went through a significant revision and was presented to the campus community with the added benefit of annual faculty/staff training by Student Affairs Staff and Campus Police. The Campus Police Office also welcomed new leadership and new officers to its ranks, with Barton alumnus John Slaughter serving as campus police supervisor. Barton’s 2010 Clery Report, submitted to the Department of Education, recognized a low campus crime rate.

A student-athlete must have at least a 3.2 grade point average in the most recent term to qualify for this honor. The average cumulative grade point average for this group at the end of the 2011-12 year was a 2.9.

Numbers Increase in Athletics’ Participation

As the event’s individual champion, he was named an All-American for the second consecutive year, and shared the Barton College Kiwanis Male Athlete of the Year Award.

Women’s Track and Field Gaining Strength in Young Program

Under the direction of Head Coach Karen Godlock, our women’s track and field team, in only its second year of competition, narrowly missed placing in the upper half of the standings at the Conference Carolinas Meet at Lees-McRae College. In placing fifth out of eight teams, Barton had several champions in individual events, including sophomore Ericka Skinner, who won the 800 and 1,500 meter runs and who later shared the Barton College Female Athlete of the Year Award.

Men’s Soccer Second in Regular Season Standings for East Division of Conference Carolinas

Under the direction of Head Coach Matt Akins, our men’s soccer team finished second in the regular season standings for the East Division of Conference Carolinas with a 7-4 league mark and had an overall record of 11-7. Sophomore Erik Pajunk was named an All-American as he led NCAA Division II nationally in assists.

Inspiring Spaces Hackney Library Undergoes Change

The Hackney Library welcomed George Loveland as its new director in March. Since then, the library has initiated a new permanent art exhibit showcasing works by current Barton art students and a series to recognize academic achievements among faculty. The library also acquired 224 volumes of research involving the intersection of religion and science. The collection was secured through a grant, written by Dr. Jane Webster and Ann Dolman, and was funded by the Library Project of the International Society for Science and Religion (ISSR). More recently, the library is evolving into a technology center on campus. Online academic programming is now housed in the library, and the library has also hired another technology librarian.

Student Success Center Expands and Relocates

Overseen by Angie Walston, assistant dean of student success, Barton’s Student Success Center has relocated to new offices in Hackney Library. This comprehensive Office of Student Success oversees academic advising, academic support, and career services. This office also supports retention initiatives through additional support for first-year students and at-risk student populations.

New Neighbors

The College’s property at 800 Corbett Street (formerly Gold Park Grill) has been upfitted and leased to the Wilson Police Department as the North Precinct Office. The increased visibility of this community partner not only enhances our Barton neighborhood, but also provides a new home for a traffic division and a downtown division of the Police Department. The Barton College District Office of the Wilson Police Department continues to operate on the first floor of Waters Hall.

Campus Commons

The College worked with arborist John Suggs who oversaw the trimming of trees on campus and the removal of several trees that had reached the end of their lifespan, were diseased, or were part of necessary excavation for the construction of the new entrance. The concrete canopy was removed behind Belk Hall and Hardy Center, creating a more expansive vista for the campus commons. Ashley Wishall of Wishall Construction in Conetoe, also an alumnus of the College, oversaw this project that was completed this past summer.

Howard Chapel

Plans to renovate Howard Chapel began last year with an initial phase of waterproofing the basement. A groundbreaking was held for the Bill and Aileen Parish Plaza during Homecoming 2012.

Street Conversions

The North Carolina Department of Transportation’s plan to convert of A.C.C. Drive and Raleigh Road from one-way to two-way streets has been completed. Raleigh Road was converted in early August and the A.C.C. Drive conversion was completed in early September. The D.O.T. also completed construction of a roundabout traffic circle at the intersections of A.C.C. Drive, Raleigh Road, and Corbett Avenue. This work by the D.O.T. has provided a much safer and more pleasing traffic pattern for the Barton neighborhood.

Temporary signs alert drivers to the new

traffic patterns around campus.

Inspiring InitiativesMarketing Initiatives

Marketing initiatives during 2011-2012 included targeting a wide range of opportunities to raise awareness and interest in Barton College. Efforts focused on both student recruitment and image awareness, with a particular emphasis on penetrating the N.C. Triangle Region market. Extending the Barton brand and positioning Barton as a nationally recognized institution has added value to both student recruitment and fundraising efforts. Fall 2011 student inquiries increased 12%, and, with Barton’s national social media presence, the College boasted over eight (8) million impressions viewed by 16- to 18-year-olds and 40 million impressions viewed by 20- to 45-year-olds in our primary markets.

Lifetime Recognition LevelsBarton College is enormously indebted to those individuals, foundations, and corporations who have and continue to demonstrate extraordinary commitment to the College through their philanthropic support. In 2006, the Torchbearer Society was created to recognize those alumni and friends who are the foundation of our institution. In 2009, the Board of Trustees unveiled new Lifetime Giving societies (Founders’ Society and Golden Knot Society) to recognize those donors who have given more than $500,000 during their relationship with Barton College. Members of these esteemed societies exemplify abiding belief and trust in the mission of the institution.

:45 Club The College and the City Of Wilson received national exposure as the result of a unique 45-second stretch in the 2007 NCAA D-II national championship men’s basketball game. In an effort to ensure that the College has the tools in place to continue this success, the prestigious :45 Club was established. Membership requires a commitment of $5,000/year for a minimum of three years. These funds are directly applied to enhancing the men’s basketball program.

The Atlantic Christian College Class of 1959 Endowed Scholarship was established with a minimum gift of $20,000 by members of the Class of 1959 and friends. The earnings from the Atlantic Christian College Class of 1959 Endowed Scholarship Fund are to be used to support Barton College undergraduate student(s) with financial need. The endowed scholarship is to be awarded annually to one or more Barton College students. The undergraduate student must have a high school GPA of 2.5 and maintain a Barton College GPA of 2.5 to renew the annual award. The endowed scholarship will be awarded by the Barton College Scholarship Committee.

The Boykin-Dillon Family International Travel Endowed Scholarship was established initially through an estate gift from Mrs. Sarah Dillon Wakefield to reflect her love for Barton College and her passion for travel. The Boykin-Dillon Family International Travel Endowed scholarship is awarded annually to one or more Barton College undergraduate students who need financial support in order to participate in one of Barton’s travel programs.

The Claudia Lucas Creasy and James Valno Creasy, Jr. Endowed Scholarship was established through the estate of Claudia and James Creasy in order to honor the family’s lifetime commitment to education. Both Claudia and Jim graduated from Atlantic Christian College. Claudia taught science at the college. Also, her father Silas Lucas taught at ACC. The scholarship is awarded annually to one or more Barton College students who plan to major in education. Since several family members were day students at Atlantic Christian College, the family’s wish is to help a student who is not in residence.

The Charles and Christine Holmes Endowed Scholarship was established in December 2008 by Charles S. Homes and Christine Homes with an initial gift of $1,000 with the intention to fully endow the scholarship by 2012. The endowed scholarship supports undergraduate students in the School of Business at Barton College.

The scholarship is awarded annually to one or more full-time Barton College students who are majoring in accounting. First preference will be given to an accounting major from Eastern North Carolina who has a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 and a minimum SAT score of 900. To retain the scholarship, the recipient(s) must remain a full-time student, maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0, and demonstrate satisfactory progress toward obtaining a degree.

The Edward B. Holloway Endowed Scholarship was established through an estate gift from Edward B. Holloway in memory of his father, John E. Holloway; mother, Bernice M. Holloway; aunt, Dorothy H. Holloway and half-brother, Murray E. Robbins.

The John A. Shanks Endowed Scholarship was established in his honor by his wife, Yvonne E. Shanks. The John A. Shanks Endowed Scholarship is to be used to support Barton College undergraduate student(s) with financial need. The endowed scholarship is to be awarded annually to one or more Barton College students. The student must be at least a sophomore with a Barton College GPA of 3.2. You can make a difference in the lives that follow. When making your estate plans, place Barton College among your loved ones.

We all hope to entrust our legacy to family, friends, and loved ones. Ultimately, we hope to leave behind assets to those who are most important to us. Barton College encourages families to take care of themselves first, but if there are other assets remaining after you satisfy those goals, please think of leaving a legacy to Barton.

A bequest provision is among the simplest yet most effective way to make a long-lasting impact at Barton. By including Barton in your estate plans, you are investing in the future of the College and the lives of young adults.

A bequest provision can provide the following benefits:

• Your gift is postponed until after your lifetime and/or the lifetime of your spouse.

• Your donation is exempt from federal estate taxation.

• You can designate how your gift will be used.

• Your gift does not take assets from your estate during your lifetime.

Membership in the Heritage Society

• Benefits include a listing in the Honor Roll of Donors, invitations to special “member-only” events, special recognition in print, web site, and at College events.

............................................

For additional information about a bequest provision or other planned giving opportunities, please contact Carolyn L. Harmon, senior advisor to the president, at 252-399-6358 or email: [email protected].
