Id like to see some kind of across-the-board cuts, including entitlements, Barton said. Id like to see

a package of spending cuts that are in the $100 billion a year for four, five or ten years, with substantivereform, or at least review, of all the entitlement programs. Thats where the money ... we cant keepdodging it. [Corsicana Daily Sun, 4/28/11]

    Business and Consumer Issues

Invited Facebook to Participate in Briefing; Facebook Declined

In 2011, it was reported that Facebook declined Barton and Markeys joint invitation to participate in acongressional briefing on children and teen privacy. Facebook had recently settled a case with the FTCover charges that it had violated its own privacy policy. We are disappointed that Facebook has declined

our invitation to brief Members of the Congressional Bi-Partisan Privacy Caucus, wrote Markey andBarton, in a letter to Facebooks CEO. [The Hill, 12/8/11]

Accused Facebook of Evading Questions About Whether it Tracked Users

In 2012, Barton and Democrat Rep. Markey accused Facebook of evading questions about whether ittracked users in order to deliver targeted ads. Facebook seems to be saying one thing and doing another,Barton said. In the companys response, it talks a lot about how they dont currently track users online, but they just asked for a patent that would allow them to do just that. Why ask for something you dontever plan on using?

I dont believe that Facebook adequately addresses that question. If they get a patent that among otherthings explicitly mentions tracking the information about the activities of users of a social networkingsystem while on another domain how will it be used? Barton added. [Blog, The Hill, 1/9/12]

Hypocrisy: Said Cutting Spending Would Create Jobs

Cutting spending will help create jobs and grow the economy in the short and long term. Themore the government borrows, spends and regulates the harder it is for businesses to accesscapital, grow and create jobs. [Rep. Barton, press release, 3/31/11]

Tell that to the construction worker in the unemployment line or the person paying $100 to fill hergas tank.

He was asked if he had a problem defending tax credits when Americans were paying so much at thepump. He said Ive just been doing it for the last 10 minutes. He was asked if he had any problemsdefending big oil tax credits. He said not as long as you believe in the free market capitalistic system andyou think they should be headquartered in the United States. Advocated For Playoff System To Determine Football Champion In College Football

In 2011, Barton advocated for a playoff system for determining a national football champion in college

football. He introduced legislation that would prohibit, as an unfair and deceptive act or practice, thepromotion, marketing, and advertising of any post-season NCAA Division I football game as a nationalchampionship game unless such game is the culmination of a fair and equitable playoff system. A similarBarton bill, introduced in 2009, never made it to the House floor for a vote. [LA Times, 1/2/12]

Texas law does not require members of Congress to live in their district but Barton still wanted tolive in the 6th Congressional District, which he has represented since 1985, and his Ennis home fallswithin the maps in contention to define districts for the 2012 elections.[Star-Telegram, 12/25/11]Close to Newt Gingrich Believed in the Power ofHis Ideas

In 2011, it was reported that in Bartons re-drawn congressional district, more than half the populationwas in Dallas County and, thus, was wholly new to him. The addition of most of Dallas County made thenew 6th Congressional District majority-minority. Barton claimed that the number of likely voters wouldstill benefit him, or any Republican candidate.

It's not as strong a Republican district, but it's certainly very winnable by me, Barton said.[Star Telegram,12/1/11]

Democrats Had Opportunity in Bartons District After Redistricting

In 2011, Bartons district was shifted into heavily minority sections of Dallas County. Democrats thinkthey have a chance to unseat the 14-term incumbent if they can recruit a strong challenger such as formerRep. Chet Edwards; former state Rep. Chris Turner, a longtime Edwards aide; or former state Rep. AllenVaught, a Purple Heart recipient. [San Antonio Express-News, 11/30/11]
