Accused Facebook of Evading Questions About Whether it Tracked Users

In 2012, Barton and Democrat Rep. Markey accused Facebook of evading questions about whether ittracked users in order to deliver targeted ads. Facebook seems to be saying one thing and doing another,Barton said. In the companys response, it talks a lot about how they dont currently track users online,but they just asked for a patent that would allow them to do just that. Why ask for something you dontever plan on using?

I dont believe that Facebook adequately addresses that question. If they get a patent that among otherthings explicitly mentions tracking the information about the activities of users of a social networkingsystem while on another domain how will it be used? Barton added. [Blog, The Hill, 1/9/12]

He said the administrationsexcuse that it didnt have enough time to review the proposal was incorrect Three years isnt enoughtime? In 2011, Barton apologized to Tony Hayward for the "shakedown" the Obama White House when hewas testifying about the Gulf Coast oil spill before a subcommittee of the House Energy and CommerceCommittee. "I'm not speaking for anybody in the House of Representatives but myself," Barton explained,"but I'm ashamed of what happened in the White House yesterday.
