Bartele Gallery 17. Atjehers, Noord Sumatra. Jean Demmeni, Kleynenburg & Co. Jean Demmeni ‘s Colonial Photographs This collection is of early 20th century black and white photographs ascribed to Jean Demmeni (1866- 1939) and published by Kleynenburg & Co. of Haarlem, The Netherlands between 1911 and 1913 in the educational print series Platen van Nederlandsch Oost-en West Indie which consisted of 171 photographs. Jean Demmeni was born at Padang-Panjang in West Sumatra in 1866, son of a French father and Indonesian mother. He entered the army in the East Indies and was assigned to the Topographic Service in Bandung in the early years of the 20th century. There he perfected his skills as a surveyor and photographer. Between 1911 and 1940, tens of thousands of pupils in Dutch secondary schools were made familiar with the customs, cultures and landscapes of the far away Indonesian archipelago through the beautiful photographs of Demmeni that hung in their classrooms. At Bartele Gallery, we have over 100 of these original photographs from this particular print series, each measuring 467 x 622 mm and in excellent condition. Jean Demmeni ‘s Colonial Photographs

This collection is of early 20th century black and white photographs ascribed to Jean Demmeni (1866-1939) and published by Kleynenburg & Co. of Haarlem, The Netherlands between 1911 and 1913 in the educational print series Platen van Nederlandsch Oost-en West Indie which consisted of 171 photographs.
