Honor God, Serve Others, Seek Christ; Together

evil world, the sweet scent of his
new and holy life glorifies God, and
there is produced in him not sweet
odors only, but also fruit that shall
abide forever. —Sadhu Sundar Singh, At the Mas-ter’s Feet
Something greater As long as we live, our self-
absorption and our insecurity will
walk together, holding hands and
swinging them back and forth like
two little girls on their way to a
pretend playground they can never
find. Human nature dictates that
most often we will be as insecure as
we are self-absorbed. The best
possible way to keep from getting
sucked into the superficial
narcissistic mentality that money,
possessions and sensuality can
satisfy and secure us is to
deliberately give ourselves to
something much greater ... [Christ]
showed us that giving, rather than
getting, is the means to receiving ...
. To find yourself, your true self,
you must lose yourself in something
larger.
—Beth Moore, So Long, Insecurity:
You’ve Been a Bad Friend to Us

A prayer Give us, O Lord, a steadfast heart,
Which no unworthy affection may
drag downwards;
Give us an unconquered heart,
Which no tribulation can wear out;
Give us an upright heart,
Which no unworthy purpose may
tempt aside.
Bestow upon us also, O Lord our
God,
Understanding to know you,
Diligence to seek you, wisdom to
find you,
And a faithfulness that may finally
embrace you;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. —Thomas Aquinas
The scent of prayer
It sometimes happens that in a plot
of unclean and filthy ground,
flowers spring up and flourish, and
the sweet scent of the flowers
overpowers the evil smell of the
place. The plants, turning toward
the sun, receive from it light and
heat, and the filth instead of being
hurtful to the plants fertilizes them
and helps them to grow and
flourish. So, too, the man of prayer
as he prays turns his heart to God,
and receives from him light and
warmth. Amidst the ill odors of this

CHURCH HISTORIAN’S NOTE: ISAAC WATTS
One of the most important authors of the hymns found in our songbook is Isaac Watts(1674-1748).
Among the most familiar of these are “Joy To The World”, When I Survey the Wondrous Cross”, and the
powerful “O God Our Help In Ages Past”. He wrote hundreds of hymns and verses for church service and has
contributed mightily to the musical fabric we enjoy.
We must make a point here that is sometimes casually overlooked or confused: a hymn is the text we sing;
a hymn-tune is the melody we attach to it. Through long usage the hymn and tune become attached, but they are
most often written by two different individuals. In fact, we have written before how our hymnal allows us to
interchange certain texts with different melodies. The hymn “O God Our Help”, for example, #67 in The Chalice
Hymnal, is most often, if not always, sung to the tune of “St. Anne”. Isaac Watts did not write music, but the texts
he composed were written to be easily learned and he developed certain scriptural passages into rhythmic verse.
Watts could be considered a genius at what he did. From an early age he composed verses in rhyme, even
in conversation, and this practice eventually became so annoying to his father that he was threatened with a
beating if he didn’t stop. In response to this threat he said :
“O Father, do some pity take,
And I will no more verses make”
Which must have completely overwhelmed the patience of his father.
Isaac learned Latin at the age of four, Greek at eight or nine, French at eleven, and Hebrew at thirteen, all
of which came into use when he began to write hymns from translations. He preached at Mark Lane Independent
Chapel in London, called at the age of twenty-six.
In practice, the use of hymns at that time in services was mostly in the form of the singing of a line at a
time by the song-leader, answered by the congregants immediately, until the hymn was completed. This method
relied on a strong leader and good tonal memory of the congregation. It was in use until printed hymnals became
more available, and this method was transported to America.
Portrait of the hymn-writer and theologian Isaac Watts. This pic-
ture reflects more of his intellectual presence than his physical
frame, as he was only five feet tall and his wig covered a head
much too small for his body. It is recorded that as a young man
he so impressed a pretty girl with his poetry that she fell in love
with him, but upon seeing him in the flesh was so disappointed
his proposal of marriage was rejected. And all this before Internet
Dating.
His influence on English hymns was substantial, however.

This is a Sunday set aside to recognize those in our church family who are graduating from high school, college or receiving post-graduate degrees. If you are or know of someone in our church who should be recognized, please send Gail an email at
[email protected] with the graduates name(s) and graduate information. We don’t want to miss recognizing anyone! (We would love to include pictures of our graduates in the newsletter, so please email or drop off a picture too)
