The program involves Broken Hill High School, Willyama High School, Menindee Central School, Wilcannia Central School and Ivanhoe Central School. The original vision for the program was put together by the then school principals in 2007-2008 and the then VET Consultant for Western NSW Region, Mr Michael Williams. Over $5million was put towards the project by the Federal Government. However, the original vision could not be completed owing to cost blow outs linked to the BER program which was initiated by the previous Federal Government to stimulate the economy. Each school received the latest modern facilities in Hospitality and share lessons through videoconferencing. Broken Hill High received an industrial kitchen and also a refurbished metals room complete with computer operated lathes. Students can undertake school based part time traineeships and have the training package delivered through the school. CAREER NEWS Tax File Number applications are no longer processed by our School as the Australian Tax Office has ceased this procedure. If students wish to apply for a Tax File Number they will need to complete an application online by going to the ato.gov.au website. Follow the instructions after completing the application as each applicant will need to go to their nearest Post Office for further directions. Year 12 students considering University study next year please note a number of seminars will be held at various times later this year with representatives from Universities from SA, NSW and VIC. It is in your best interest to attend these meetings, as you will receive important information. Year 10 students are currently researching the benefits of School Based Traineeships and how a traineeship can be rewarding through employment in their HSC years and the attainment of qualifications whilst still at school. Year 9 students have been introduced to the world of work and hopefully how they can secure a part time job. During this term, students will look at what is work and why do people work. Budgets and taxation are just some of the new concepts students will learn about and understand. Please feel free to see me anytime and if parents wish to discuss any matters I am available to do so. Brian Bates Career Advisor Year 11 Exploring Early Childhood

Week 6 was a big week for the Exploring Early Childhood Students. We went on an excursion to hospital and enjoyed a tour around the maternity ward. Emma Howard, the Clinical Midwifery Educator presented information on pregnancy and birth, along with the importance of after birth care. Students got to see various equipment used in the maternity ward.

During the SRC ceremony, the students hosted various activities for children to enjoy while their parents attended the ceremony. This offered great experiences for the Year 11 students, and allowed them to interact with small children. Thank you to the parents/caregivers for allowing us to look after your children.

Attention: Parents of Year 12 Students UniSA will be hosting a parents’ information evening at Willyama High School on Wed 25th March from 7-8pm (in the Upstairs Library). This is an annual visit during which information is provided about studying at the University of South Australia, and about the application process through SATAC (South Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre), as well as other general information about moving away to Adelaide for study. UniSA is South Australia’s biggest university, with 4 different campuses, each specialising in different areas of knowledge and training. You can visit the UniSA website and experience virtual tours at http://www.unisa.edu.au/ RUGBY LEAGUE SKILLS SESSION On Wednesday 11 March, representatives of Country Rugby League came to the school to put students through a two hour session of Rugby League skills. The reason was to prepare students for a gala day to be held on 31 March this year with a possible pathway for further representative opportunities. The day started at 9am with 50 students participating. It was a good turn out and Matt Kiddle and the boys with him were impressed by the skills on show by our boys and 3 girls. With a couple of warm up activities, the students were geared up to move onto some of the more difficult skills, slide defence and passing onto a running teammate. The students had regular water breaks in between each change in activity. The skills displayed in the two hour session were impressive and I have no doubt that the gala day will be a success for the schools and the students participating. It would be appreciated if parents could attend to support the students on the day. Matt Hammond.

The Homework Centre is open again for 2015 every Monday and Thursday afternoon from 3:30-PM in the Library. Come and work on your homework, assessment tasks or any general interest projects that you have. Its a quiet place to study and you can access the Internet and printer. Afternoon tea is provided and you can bring your own laptops/Ipads/tablets if you wish. Staff from different faculties will be assisting in the homework centre each week so that you can access help from your teachers. There will be work for ALL SUBJECTS and ALL YEAR GROUPS. All students should make use of this fantastic facility, especially seniors. Please see Miss Perry in the HSIE staffroom if you have any questions. CANTEEN NEWS We are still in desperate need for volunteers in the Canteen for Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

We now have available for lunches Meat and Salad Plates for $5-50.

If you would like one and don’t want to miss out then please order in the morning or at recess for lunch orders.

Reason for Absence Notes It is a legal requirement that if a child is absent for any reason then it must be explained in a signed note by the parent/caregiver. The Home School Liaison Officer checks for notes to match absences and if absences are not accompanied by a note parents/caregivers may need to explain. Certain procedures must be carried out when children are absent from school for any period of time including full day absence and partial absence (late arrival to school/early departure due to appointments or sickness etc.) The school has provided a ‘REASON FOR ABSENCE’ note to assist you to notify the school when your child is absent or late. More notes are available from the Front Office if required. The slip below may be detached to explain an absence or you may email the school.
