Englishman who had a love for boating and fishing. He liked boating so much that after he was struck by paralysis he left his homeland and even his wife to sail the Caribbean in his final days. He sailed on his yacht, the Sea King, around the Caribbean for 6 years until he was struck by food poisoning.

He was old friends of the Attorney General of Belize, Willoughby Bullock, who invited him to stay in Belize. He was so astounded by the beauty and hospitality of Belize that when the doctors told him he was going to die he left the bulk of his wealth, $1,850,000, to Belize in the form of a fund in his will.

The fund is spent on the welfare of Belizean, libraries, museums, markets, clinics, ect. In honor of Belize’s greatest benefactor every year they hold a celebration in Belize city where they hold boat races. The Holiday itself is held on a Friday providing a three day weekend for the citizens of Belize.La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge, a canoe

race held every year starting the weekend before Baron Bliss Day and lasts 4 days.

The Holiday is also celebrated by towns and cities besides Belize city. These towns usually hold ship or miniature ship races.
