Rationale
Between 1979 and 1992:• Barnstable installed 19 portable
temporary classrooms as student enrollment increased during this period of time.
• This was a temporary measure until a more permanent solution could be determined.

spaces• One trailer houses the administrative office for
the Early Learning Center

Current Use of Trailers for Educational Instructional Spaces
West Barnstable (BWB) – identified as a long-term school facility (TAMS Report 2003) as it is the only north side school in Barnstable.– Two trailers are used for special education,
art, music and technology. – School library is located on stage in cafeteria.– Current and future needs require the existing
2 trailers be demolished and replaced with permanent modular classrooms of 3,920 sq. ft.

Current Use of Trailers for Educational Instructional Spaces (cont.)
Hyannis West Elementary School houses 3 trailers installed in 1992 totaling 3,456 sq. ft.• School programs are housed in areas not intended for academic use:
– Reading support is held in a former locker room and on the cafeteria stage
– Small group math instruction is held in a locker room– Occupational therapy, physical therapy and Gateway instruction are
in outdated temporary buildings – Space Assessment (TBA Architects, 2013) identifies Hyannis West
Elementary school as having only 89% of the required space needed to educate a population of 340
– Current and future needs require the existing temporary space be replaced with permanent modular classrooms totaling 5,040 sq. ft.
