PRINCIPAL REPORT
Welcome to our week 8 newsletter.
Winter is well and truly upon us. Please ensure that your children
are warmly dressed and in full school uniform. I have noticed
some students out of school uniform. Our school uniform is very
important. Students who wear our school uniform show pride in
our school and themselves as well as adherence to school rules
and expectations. Please ensure that your child wears their full
school uniform to school every day and is a proud member of
Barnier Public School. Please also ensure that jackets, hats and
hair ties/accessories are blue to match our uniform.
Class Visits
I have completed all my Early Stage One and Stage One class
visits and have now moved onto Stage Two classes. It’s been
such a pleasure to spend time in classrooms getting to know and
interacting with our students. I thank all staff and students for
allowing me to do this and welcoming me so warmly into their
beautiful learning environments
Student Reports
All students will receive their Semester 1 report on Thursday 5th
July. Interviews for parents will be happening early in Term 3.
Please take this opportunity to discuss any concerns or questions
you may have. Open, honest and timely communication with your
child’s teacher is very important. If you are concerned, however,
please don’t wait for interviews. Contact the school office or email
your child’s teacher as soon as possible to organise a suitable
time to meet.
Litter
Litter continues to be a big problem at Barnier Public School. We
want all students and visitors to our school to respect and care for
our school playground and school grounds. Please speak with
your children about the importance of this and strongly encourage
them to dispose of their litter thoughtfully and appropriately. We
are currently working with the P&C to clean up and beautify our
school playgrounds and grounds for the students and the
expectation is that all members of our school community will
support this project.
PSSA Behaviour Expectations
We have expectations of parent behaviour outlined in the PSSA
Parent Code of Conduct:

PRINCIPAL REPORT
1. Do not force an unwilling child to participate in sport.
2. Remember that your children are involved in organised sport
for their enjoyment and fulfilment, not yours.
3. Encourage your child to play by the rules.
4. Teach your child that honest effort is as important as winning.
5. Encourage your child to work towards skill improvement and
good sportsmanship. Never ridicule a child for making a mistake or losing the game.
6. Remember that children learn best by example. Applaud good
play no matter what team.
7. Do not publicly question the officials’ judgement and never
their honesty.
8. Appreciate the contribution and commitment of teacher-
coaches. They give their time and resources to provide sporting activities for your child.
9. Have realistic expectations for your child and/or his/her team.
Do not expect more than they can give.
10. Encourage your child to accept that even the best player will
have to take a turn on the bench from time to time. We expect all parents to set an excellent example for their child and other children by showing respectful and appropriate behaviour and language. The referees at PSSA games give up their time voluntarily, often at very short notice and with minimal training. They are doing their very best under, often, difficult circumstances. The priority and focus for every student in every team is skill development and learning good sportsmanship on the playing field.
Safety
Please remind your children of the procedures for crossing the
road safely. We have had a number of days this year when the
school crossing attendants have not been able to work. On these
days children are reminded to stand at the crossing and wait until
approaching vehicles have stopped before crossing the road.
Please reinforce this rule at home to ensure the safety of our
students. Also we ask all parents to drive and park safely, and
comply with speed limits and parking laws during drop off and
collection times, thank you.
Reading this Fortnight …. HELPING CHILDREN CROSS THE ROAD SAFELY Children may cut it more closely than their parents realise when it comes to guessing how far cars are from an intersection or how long it takes to safely reach the other side. Using virtual reality, researchers tested how often children might walk into oncoming

traffic in real life. The results show that parents may be over-estimating how careful their children are and may need to teach them safer habits. Study participants wore headsets outfitted with a 3-D display and motion sensors to detect every real step they took into virtual streets. Researchers asked the children to cross the virtual street when they thought traffic conditions were safe. Researchers measured how many seconds the virtual cars were from hitting children when they crossed the street. Then, they put parents in the same situation and asked them when they thought their children would attempt to cross. Parents generally expected their children not to cross the street when an oncoming car was less than 4 seconds away, while the children crossed into traffic with tighter gaps of about 3 seconds. We need to be realistic about children's developmental level and not over-estimate their ability to judge safe distances. A small error can result in the child being seriously injured. To keep children safe, adults need to start by setting a good example. Children learn a lot just by watching. If parents and older children behave in dangerous ways, younger children are likely to do so also. Older children may take greater risks dashing out between cars. Pedestrian safety lessons need to start early when children have to cross busy intersections from a very young age. For toddlers, parents can talk about what safety choices they make each time they cross the street, from looking both ways to making eye contact with drivers. By the time children are 4 or 5 years old, parents can start letting children make the decision about when it's safe to cross a street, starting with residential streets with light traffic before trying busy intersections. This lets parents gently correct bad choices so children can fine-tune their instincts about when it's safe to cross. Talking to children about why they need to follow particular rules or procedures for crossing safely is a good approach, like pointing out the good sense in walking a little further to use a pedestrian crossing rather than take a risk.

Writing Club
Barnier Public School offers a Writing Club for
Years 2 to 6 students. Students can write
creatively in a collaborative setting or
independently. This is an opportunity for
students to develop their writing style and
receive feedback on their work. Any students
in Years 2 to 6 are welcome to join as there is
no criteria and this is an interest based group.
The Writing Club runs every Monday during
first half of lunch in 5/6K. If students are
interested they need to come prepared with a
notebook and a pencil. We would love to see
you there.
Happy Writing.

Kindy Excursion On Thursday 14th of June Kindergarten went
on their first excursion to Featherdale Wildlife
Park. We were very excited to hop on the big
bus and couldn’t wait to see all the animals we
have been learning about. We saw many
Australian animals such as kangaroos,
wombats, emus and dingos. Our highlight was
meeting Chester the koala in the learning
burrow. Kindergarten thoroughly enjoyed their
first excursion and were extremely well
behaved! The kindy teachers would like to
thank the parent helpers who assisted on the
day.
Year 6 Spider Stall
On Wednesday the Year 6 students held their
second fundraiser for the year: The Spider
Stall. The Year 6 students spent recess
preparing delicious spiders for the school
community and sold them for $1 to raise funds
for their farewell at the end of the year. Thank
you to the families of the Year 6 students for
donating the soft drinks and ice-cream scoops
for the day and for the entire Barnier
community for participating in this annual
event. Stay tuned for our next fundraiser
occurring in term 3.

Tell Them From Me Student Survey Results
The Tell Them For Me (TTFM) student survey is designed to provide an insight from the
perspectives of students and community members to guide our school planning and help
identify areas for improvement.
A survey was recently completed by students at Barnier Public School (BPS), between 13
Mar 2018 and 12 Apr 2018 which highlighted to the staff our strengths and areas to work
on.
The data displayed that Barnier students feel classroom instruction is relevant to their
everyday lives and try hard to succeed in their learning above the NSW government norm.
These results are lovely to see as our teachers strive to challenge each student to reach
their potential.
The survey results indicated a continued focus on anti-bullying strategies and programs at
BPS is required, including education regarding cyber-bullying. Cyber-bullying is a serious
issue. If a student feels threatened or bullied over the internet in any way, we encourage
them to not respond, block and report and talk to an adult. In addition to our current
practices around cyber safety, Barnier Public School will be participating in ‘A Day for
Daniel’. ‘A Day for Daniel’ is a national day of action raising awareness of child safety,
protection and prevention in which teachers will focus particularly on cyber safety to
combat this issue. The education, safety and wellbeing of all our students is our highest
priority.
Data collected highlighted that most students feel they have someone at school who
consistently provides encouragement and can turn to for advice. Students feel teachers
are responsive to their needs and encourage independence with a democratic approach.
This shows the positive relationships that have been built amongst our teachers and
students.
We thank all the students at BPS who participated in this survey.
